"Battle is not always the answer, but is part of our heritage, the legacy passed to us by our warrior ancestors, as well as the path to our future. Some questions can only lead to conflict; all challenges deserve a brave, carefully planned response. As long as we fight with honor, courage, and respect for our enemies, the legacy of battle deserves to survive. We will continue to pass on our skills to the new apprentices, then watch as they train the next generation. Heroes will be celebrated, the losing side condemned to dust in our memories. This is what it means to be a warrior: to be proud of our legacy, of the battles that we have fought and that our ancestors fought on our behalf. For as long as the fire burns in our blood, warrior Clans will fight."
— Onestar about battles in Battles of the Clans, page 97

Battles are an important aspect of Clan life. The lives of the Clans revolve around battles; Clan cats are expected to fight to defend their borders and each other from their enemies.[1] Apprentices are taught specialized fighting techniques by their mentors to defend their Clan.[2] Clan cats are expected to defend the Clan with their life,[3] but are discouraged from killing to win battles according to the warrior code.[4] It is said that a noble warrior does not need to kill in order to win battles.[5] Most battles are caused by territorial disputes between two Clans. Sunningrocks was a frequently contested location between ThunderClan and RiverClan.[6] At times, Clan cats will fight against other animals, such as badgers,[7] foxes,[8] raccoons,[9] dogs,[10] large birds of prey,[11] stoats,[12] and rats.[13] Clans cats commonly fight against kittypets,[14] rogues,[15] and other groups of cats that threaten their territory as well.[16][17]

List of cats who have died in battles[]

"Warriors face many challenges, but the warrior code protects them, Spottedpaw. No cat should ever be killed, even in the heat of battle. We fight to defend our borders, not main the cats on the other side. [...] Battles are only a small part of our lives. A true warrior has more love in her heart than hatred. Love for her Clanmates, for the forest that shelters her, for the prey that feeds us all."
―Featherwhisker to Spottedpaw Spottedleaf's Heart, chapter 7
While warriors are discouraged from killing to win battles according to the warrior code, cats frequently die in battles. When fighting other warriors, cats either on accident to defend themselves[18] or on purpose.[19] The following is a chronological list of confirmed deaths in the series that occurred during or resulted from a battle:

—Thunder after Misty's death Thunder Rising, page 261

The First Battle[]

"This isn't a battle! It's a slaughter."
―Thunder to Clear Sky The First Battle, page 239
DTC-3-FC

Tensions rose between the mountain cats when Clear Sky began implementing borders and casting those from his territory, and it resulted in a deadly battle at four trees

After moons of tension between the Early Settlers, Gray Wing, Tall Shadow, Thunder, and Clear Sky meet at four trees in a truce to discuss peace between the two groups. However, it soon escalates to a battle that results in the deaths of Fircone, Rainswept Flower, Falling Feather, Jackdaw's Cry, Hawk Swoop, and Frost. The battle ends when Clear Sky refuses to kill his brother Gray Wing. While the cats are horrified at the loss of so many campmates, spirits of their fallen rise as star-speckled ghosts, urging them to unite or die.

The Blazing Star[]

"You said you'd fight me, Clear Sky. Are you ready to die?"
―One Eye The Blazing Star (book), page 229
One Eye, a vicious rogue, takes over Clear Sky's group and exiles him. The other groups band together to drive him out, with Gray Wing coming up with the battle strategy. Clear Sky lures One Eye into an open clearing but Gray Wing, Tall Shadow, Wind Runner, and River Ripple and their groups ambush One Eye. One Eye reveals that his daughter, Star Flower, had betrayed them and had brought One Eye's rogues as reinforcements. While they torture Clear Sky, River Ripple, Tall Shadow, Gray Wing, Wind Runner, and their cats hide in the tunnels and ambush One Eye and his cats from the trees. Thunder, Cloud Spots, Gray Wing, and Lightning Tail kill One Eye

Path of Stars[]

"But don't think you've won. Go back to your camps, you mouse-brains. You'll learn quickly enough the price you've paid for defying me."
―Slash Path of Stars, page 241
Slash and his rogues repeatedly attack the forest cats and steal their prey. As revenge for refusing to give him prey, Slash and his rogues attack Wind Runner's camp and steal Black Ear, injuring Spotted Fur and Slate in the process. Thunder, Clear Sky, Sparrow Fur, and Owl Eyes attack Slash and his rogues near the Thunderpath and rescue Black Ear.

In The Prophecies Begin arc[]

Into the Wild[]

"Bluestar would never expect her warriors to fight against these impossible odds. We will have another chance to avenge this defeat."
―Redtail to Tigerclaw Into the Wild, page 2
Battle

Rusty fighting against Longtail

A battle between RiverClan and ThunderClan takes place at Sunningrocks. Redtail, ThunderClan's deputy, eventually realizes that ThunderClan is badly outnumbered, so he calls off all his warriors to retreat, therefore giving RiverClan an easy victory and claiming Sunningrocks as their territory. Rusty, a kittypet, fights Longtail for his place in ThunderClan. Later, he, Tigerclaw, and Ravenpaw scout Sunningrocks but are ambushed by RiverClan, resulting in the deaths of Oakheart and Redtail. WindClan is eventually driven off by Brokenstar and his Clan.
Another battle takes place between ThunderClan and ShadowClan in ShadowClan's camp to drive Brokenstar and his followers out of ShadowClan for good. ThunderClan's stolen kits are taken home, and Brokenstar and his followers become rogues.

Fire and Ice[]

Brokenstar: "You might have taken my Clan away from me, but you can't kill me—I have more lives than you!"
Fireheart: "One ThunderClan life is worth ten of yours!"
—Brokenstar and Fireheart in battle Fire and Ice, page 264
Battles

ThunderClan helped ShadowClan's exiled to overthrow Brokenstar

After bringing WindClan back to their territory, Fireheart, Graystripe, and their escorts, Deadfoot and Onewhisker, are caught on RiverClan territory by a patrol. Forced into battle, they are saved by a ThunderClan patrol. Whiteclaw falls into the gorge while fighting Graystripe, and RiverClan promises to get revenge as they retreat.
Whilst every warrior, excluding Fireheart, is on patrol, Brokenstar and his band of rogues attack ThunderClan. Graystripe kills Clawface to save Fireheart's life. Brokenstar is blinded by his mother, Yellowfang, and led to the medicine den after the battle. Sandpaw and Dustpaw earn their warrior names for fighting well.
Aiding WindClan in a fight against ShadowClan and RiverClan, Fireheart is nearly killed by Leopardfur, the RiverClan deputy, and Tigerclaw merely stands and watches, refusing to help. Graystripe, whose mate is a RiverClan she-cat, only fights the ShadowClan warriors. At one point, Fireheart releases Silverstream, Graystripe's mate, from his grasp and allows her leave.

Forest of Secrets[]

"Mouse dung! I'll flay you, Fireheart. I've waited a long time for this."
―Tigerclaw Forest of Secrets, page 275
Battle

RiverClan defending its border from WindClan

ThunderClan is attacked by WindClan and ShadowClan, and is allied with RiverClan to drive WindClan and ShadowClan off. Both Clans are furious at the fact that ThunderClan is sheltering Brokentail, who had caused much harm to both Clans, but WindClan and ShadowClan lose the battle.
When Fireheart takes out his new apprentice, Cloudpaw, they sense a band of rogues coming. Cloudpaw is sent to find all the patrols that had left this morning. Tigerclaw leads a band of rogues to take over ThunderClan, but made it seem as if he was fighting on the Clans' side. Tigerclaw confronts Bluestar in her den, and nearly kills her, but Fireheart comes to Bluestar's rescue. Bluestar is shocked from Tigerclaw's betrayal. RiverClan once more comes to ThunderClan's aid, and after the battle ends, Tigerclaw is exiled. Fireheart is named the new deputy.

Rising Storm[]

"Are you listening, kittypet? I will kill you, and all your warriors, one by one."
―Tigerclaw Rising Storm, page 185
When Fireheart and his patrol come across Runningwind's dead body, he spots Whitethroat standing over it. Fireheart assumes that Whitethroat killed Runningwind and attacks him. Whitethroat tries to flee across the Thunderpath but is hit by a monster, killing him. Fireheart runs back onto the ThunderClan side of the border and jumps onto Tigerclaw's back but Tigerclaw throws him off in one powerful leap. He then pins Fireheart down and threatens to kill each of his warriors one by one. Mousefur and Whitestorm leap into battle with the other rogues that had surrounded the patrol. Fireheart sees Graystripe lunge at Tigerclaw and soon realizes that Graystripe had brought a whole RiverClan patrol. The rogues flee the battle after seeing they were outnumbered.

A Dangerous Path[]

"Call yourself a leader? Why won't you fight?"
―Stonefur to Bluestar A Dangerous Path, page 188
Leopardstar challenges Bluestar and ThunderClan for Sunningrocks. Fireheart sends Swiftpaw to fetch help from their camp. Stonefur and Mistyfoot corner Bluestar and press her to fight until Fireheart stops them by revealing she is their mother. ThunderClan succeeds in defending Sunningrocks when Swiftpaw arrives with reinforcements.
ThunderClan is forced to face a pack of dogs that were let loose in their territory while being fed by Tigerstar. Fireheart organizes some patrols to lead the pack to the gorge where he hopes the dogs will fall over the edge. Ashpaw, Fernpaw, Sandstorm, Longtail, Dustpelt, Mousefur, and Graystripe lure the pack, along with Fireheart. Tigerstar steps in and pins Fireheart to the ground in a surprise attack and flees once the dogs have caught up. The pack leader picks up Fireheart and Bluestar launches herself towards the leader of the pack. The pack leader drops Fireheart and he and Bluestar fall over the edge. The rest of the pack jumps down to find their leader, falling to their deaths. Fireheart follows but cannot hold on to Bluestar. Mistyfoot and Stonefur come to their rescue, pulling both cats out. Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save Bluestar, as she goes to join StarClan, but not before expressing her admiration for her kits.

The Darkest Hour[]

"Firestar, you are wrong. There were never four Clans in the forest. There were always five."
―StarClan to Firestar The Darkest Hour, page 303
Battle against BloodClan (TDH)

The battle against BloodClan

When they refuse to join TigerClan, WindClan is attacked brutally in their camp. Many warriors are left scarred and weak, but Gorsepaw is deliberately killed by Tigerstar because of his growing bond with Firestar.
Tigerstar is enraged by Scourge's refusal to obey his orders and attacks him. The BloodClan leader outmaneuvers the dark tabby easily and slices him open from chin to tail with his dog teeth-reinforced claws. Each of Tigerstar's nine lives ebb away from the terrible wound, leaving him helpless on the ground as he dies in agony.
BloodClan challenges the four Clans for their territory, and all four of the Clans come together to form LionClan to fight against BloodClan. Whitestorm, the ThunderClan deputy, is killed in this battle, but he died honorably for his Clan. StarClan cats fight alongside Firestar and encourage him, despite what the leader had witnessed when Scourge killed Tigerstar. The Clans are victorious against BloodClan when Firestar kills Scourge.

This plan fails, and because Crowpaw was about to die at Sharptooth's claws, Feathertail grabs onto a stalactite and it drops down, killing both herself and Sharptooth.

―Mudclaw Starlight, page 299

Mudclaw's rebellion

Firestar accompanies a patrol to check it out and discovers that Mistyfoot had been correct. Later, Mudclaw and Brambleclaw end up fighting and the WindClan warrior has the advantage until Hawkfrost saves Brambleclaw, his half-brother. Lightning strikes a tree, causing it to fall on Mudclaw. The battle ends with a celebration to secure Onewhisker's leadership of WindClan.

They enter a raging camp, and during the battle, Cinderpelt and Sootfur are killed. Cinderpelt dies after helping Sorreltail deliver her kits. After when it seems like ThunderClan will be defeated, WindClan comes to help ThunderClan, sent by Midnight. After being defeated, the badgers retreat.

As their visit to the mountain draws to an end and after casting stones to see if the majority of the Tribe wants to leave to find a new home or to fight their enemies, fighting wins. Brambleclaw organizes an attack on the intruders, and they proceed with the battle plan, winning the attack against the intruders.

Eclipse[]

"There have always been four Clans. Onestar seems to have forgotten that. We will all be more vulnerable if one disappears."
―Russetfur Eclipse, page 196
WindClan declares war on ThunderClan. They attack ThunderClan's camp at night in protests against Firestar taking in too many kittypets and loners and helping the Clans over and over. Cloudtail finds out that they have split into three patrols and have spread across the territory, and they used the tunnels to attack. RiverClan joins the battle as well on WindClan's side. Brambleclaw sends Hollypaw to ask for help from ShadowClan, and Blackstar agrees. Eventually, all four Clans are fighting on ThunderClan's territory.
Lionpaw accuses Heatherpaw of informing her Clanmates about the tunnels, but she insists it was Sedgekit who had done so. Lionpaw refuses to believe her, but when Crowfeather arrives, Lionpaw nearly kills him, only to be stopped by Heatherpaw. After this, an eclipse blocks out the sun and the light, and the battle ends. Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, and Cinderheart are named warriors.

―Brokenstar Yellowfang's Secret, page 414

ThunderClan and RiverClan fought over Sunningrocks for many moons

When ThunderClan takes control over Sunningrocks, there is much debate on whether to attack them back or not. However, when Brambleberry says she doesn't have enough herbs to treat wounded warriors, Hailstar makes the decision not to fight. He sends a patrol to Sunningrocks anyway to warn ThunderClan that Sunningrocks is still theirs, and they will be defended soon. Hailstar finally makes the decision to battle for Sunningrocks again after inferring that ThunderClan is weak from a Gathering. He sends a battle patrol consisting of himself, Shellheart, Timberfur, Rippleclaw, Owlfur, Ottersplash, Oakheart, Beetlenose, Petaldust, Whitefang, Shimmerpelt, Softwing, Piketooth, Rainflower, Voleclaw, Cedarpelt, and Crookedpaw. They swim to Sunningrocks but are soon spotted by Pinestar and his ThunderClan patrol. As the battle proceeds, RiverClan has the upper hand, however, Stormtail turns up with a second patrol, and ThunderClan succeeds in driving RiverClan back. When they get back to camp, they discover that Hailstar has lost a life from the battle.
RiverClan re-marks Sunningrocks, and ThunderClan doesn't fight to reclaim it, signifying the change in possession of the timeless rocks. Since the victory was so easy, Hailstar makes plans expand their territory to the forest on the other side of the river. Hailstar, Timberfur, Rippleclaw, Shellheart, Piketooth, Whitefang, and Ottersplash leave on the battle patrol. When they come back, they are all wounded, having lost the battle.
ThunderClan now marks Sunningrocks, and RiverClan lets them have it for leaf-bare and newleaf. However, starting greenleaf, Hailstar says they will take it back by resetting the scent markings and fighting. They rush onto Sunningrocks, where four ThunderClan warriors spot them as they finish re-marking the scent. Mudfur bristles and claims that too much blood has been spilled over these rocks already. He challenges Adderfang to a fight where each will represent their own Clan. The two cats fight, the upper hand of the battle constantly changing until Mudfur locks Adderfang into a grip he cannot escape from. Adderfang surrenders, and RiverClan claims Sunningrocks.
Once leaf-fall starts again, Sunstar leads a patrol into RiverClan camp saying that Sunningrocks is now theirs, and if RiverClan doesn't want to get hurt, they will accept this decision. Once the patrol leaves, RiverClan buzzes with excitement about the battle. However, Hailstar tells Crookedjaw to announce there will be no battle until newleaf, averting it. After Crookedstar becomes leader, Loudbelly notes that RiverClan had won so many battles in the past few moons that it is hard to count them all. RiverClan had also grasped Sunningrocks for a long time since the few moons since Sunstar's mission.

Bluestar's Prophecy[]

Featherwhisker: "These will give our warriors strength. Each cat will eat some before the battle."
Bluepaw: "Do you have anything for bravery?"
Featherwhisker: "Bravery will come from your heart. You were born a warrior, and StarClan will be with you."
—Featherwhisker to Bluepaw Bluestar's Prophecy, page 102
Goosefeather, the ThunderClan medicine cat, receives a sign from StarClan telling them to attack WindClan. Pinestar is hesitant since it's so close to leaf-bare, but ThunderClan's senior warriors push him to attack. On the day of the battle, Goosefeather then gets another omen in a piece of catmint clinging to the vole's other flank, telling him to take the battle into WindClan's camp and to destroy their medicine supplies. Many cats continue to have doubts in believing that the sign is true. ThunderClan raids WindClan's camp at dawn, and a few warriors raid the medicine den. Hawkheart tears after them, and manages to kill Moonflower. Pinestar calls for ThunderClan to retreat. Leopardpaw has a bad claw injury and Stonepelt's injuries never heal, so he retires to the elders' den. When the defeated warriors return to camp, Swiftbreeze attacks Goosefeather, but Adderfang and Tawnyspots stop her before she leaves a claw mark.
RiverClan crosses the ice, trying to take Sunningrocks back. Pinestar calls for a patrol to be made to attack from the far side. After this, a second wave will finish them off. In the battle, RiverClan has the upper hand until Stormtail leads the second patrol. Hailstar orders to retreat, and the warriors scramble across the ice, shattering it with their hind legs so ThunderClan can't follow. RiverClan re-sets the scent markers, and Pinestar refuses to fight.
Hailstar now wants more land, and he sends a patrol of cats to set markers in a forest portion of ThunderClan's territory. A ThunderClan patrol finds them, but being skilled in stalking through undergrowth, they get back and tell Sunfall as Pinestar is missing. Swiftbreeze observes that they don't know where to head, and Sunfall makes plans to fight them where the undergrowth is thickest, as RiverClan isn't used to fighting in brambles. They split into three patrols. ThunderClan attacks, and they immediately start to win. They corner the RiverClan warriors, and Shellheart calls the retreat.
When Bluefur takes Snowfur out of camp, they encounter three ShadowClan warriors they had crossed the border to chase a squirrel. Snowfur attacks them, and the ShadowClan warriors hastily cross the Thunderpath to return to their territory. Snowfur tries to cross after them but gets hit by a monster. When Sunstar offers Bluefur the choice of being deputy, Bluefur notes that Sunstar has lost three lives in battle to make ThunderClan strong and feared.

Leopardstar's Honor[]

"I loved being a warrior. But, after your mother died, I lost my appetite for battle. I know Clans must fight sometimes. They will always have something worth protecting."

Leopardfur leads a patrol to remark Sunningrocks with Whitefang, Stonefur, Frogleap, Sunfish, Ottersplash, and Rippleclaw. Redtail and his patrol meets them, and Leopardfur falls for Redtail's taunts to a fight. Whitefang's death and Sunfish's injuries forces RiverClan to retreat. Crookedstar sends a battle patrol to defend Sunningrocks that results in Oakheart's death. During the fight, Leopardfur and Whitepaw fight off a pike to save Blackclaw. Later, RiverClan confronts WindClan and ThunderClan on their territory, but the battle results in Whiteclaw falling to his death over the gorge.
RiverClan and ShadowClan attack WindClan's camp to drive them away after their return. ThunderClan arrives to help, and the attacking Clans retreat. Moons later, Leopardstar and her Clan attempt to retake Sunningrocks, but are defeated by ThunderClan. Leopardstar exiles Graystripe for betraying RiverClan. Now joined as TigerClan, they attack WindClan's camp and Tigerstar kills Gorsepaw to leave Firestar a message.

Later, the stoats attack WindClan's camp. Onestar eventually asks ThunderClan for help, and they are successful in defeating the stoats.

Bramblestar's Storm[]

―Bramblestar to ThunderClan Bramblestar's Storm, page 395
Since the Great Storm, ShadowClan had to evacuate their camp, but face trouble from the kittypets in the Twoleg nest. Tawnypelt asks Bramblestar for help, though Rowanstar sharply declines it. Later, ShadowClan faces more trouble when badgers begin moving into their new land. While ShadowClan refuses help, Bramblestar insists they will honor his bond with his sister, Tawnypelt. ShadowClan and ThunderClan succeed in driving away the badgers, though Dustpelt dies. Rowanstar begrudgingly thanks Bramblestar for the help.

―Moonlight Squirrelflight's Hope, page 96
The Clans come into conflict with the Sisters, a group of nomad she-cats living beyond their territory. ShadowClan, WindClan, and RiverClan wish to force the Sisters out of new territory for SkyClan, though the Sisters refuse until after their leader Moonlight has given birth to her kits. Tigerstar wishes for war when the Sisters wound Strikestone's ear. Eventually, ThunderClan, ShadowClan, WindClan, and RiverClan force the Sisters away in battle, though it results in the deaths of Leafpool and Moonlight, and Squirrelflight is gravely injured. SkyClan moves into the new territory and provides shelter for the Sisters until Moonlight's newborn kits are strong enough to travel.
