"You have suffered much and lost much, and yet you still serve your Clanmates, putting their needs before yours, willing to sacrifice all for the sake of your Clan."
Sunstar telling Bluefur why he chose her to be his deputy in Bluestar's Prophecy, page 496

Bluestar is a pale blue-gray she-cat[17] with blue eyes.[18]

Bluestar was a leader of ThunderClan in the forest territories. She was a proud and deeply committed leader. Bluekit was born to Moonflower and Stormtail alongside her sister, Snowkit. She was apprenticed early as Bluepaw with her mentor being Stonepelt. However, after a devastating battle, Moonflower was killed and Stonepelt retired, resulting in Sunfall being Bluepaw's new mentor. Goosefeather gave her a prophecy, though she didn't think much of it. After becoming a warrior, Bluefur raised Whitekit, Snowfur's kit, as her own after the death of her sister due to a Thunderpath accident while chasing off ShadowClan trespassers, and Bluefur fell for a RiverClan warrior, Oakheart, becoming pregnant with his kits. Bluefur then realized she could not be loyal to her Clan when her heart lay somewhere else. At first, she raised Mistykit, Stonekit, and Mosskit in ThunderClan with Thrushpelt acting as their father; however, in order to become deputy instead of the ambitious Thistleclaw, whom she feared would destroy ThunderClan with his thirst for battle, she gave up her kits to Oakheart to live in RiverClan, and on the journey there, Mosskit perished from the cold. Bluefur mentored Frostfur and Runningwind, and later succeeded Tawnyspots as deputy. After Sunstar's death, she became leader as Bluestar.

After Spottedleaf received a prophecy, Bluestar invited a young kittypet named Rusty to join ThunderClan, naming him Firepaw, and mentored him. Despite warnings from Fireheart, Bluestar trusted her deputy, Tigerclaw, until he tried to murder her during a battle, and she banished him, which sent her into a depressive state and turned her against StarClan. After Bluestar sacrificed herself to save ThunderClan, Mistyfoot and Stonefur forgave her, and she ascended to StarClan where she became mates with Oakheart again and reunited with her kin, feeling at peace. While in StarClan, she granted Firestar, Blackstar, Mistystar, and Bramblestar one of their nine lives.

The Prophecies Begin[]

«But Fireheart was not sure he understood at all. His mind was whirling. On one paw he could picture the young warrior. Bluefur; fiercely ambitious, determined to do what was best for her Clan, even if it meant unimaginable sacrifices. On the other, he saw a mother grieving for the kits she had abandoned so long ago. And what was probably more real to him than either; the gifted leader who had done what she felt was best and borne the pain of it alone.»
—Fireheart's thoughts about Bluestar Forest of Secrets, page 235
After Spottedleaf, the ThunderClan medicine cat, receives a prophecy foretelling fire saving the Clan, Bluestar invites a flame-colored kittypet named Rusty to join ThunderClan, where he is named Firepaw. When news arrives of her deputy Redtail's death, Bluestar names Lionheart his replacement. She takes on Firepaw as her apprentice, teaching him how to become a warrior. While returning from the Moonstone, their patrol is attacked by rats, causing Bluestar to lose one of her nine lives. Upon returning to camp, ShadowClan is revealed to have attacked and claimed the life of Lionheart. Thereafter, Bluestar names Tigerclaw the new deputy.
Some time after, Bluestar loses another life to greencough. When Fireheart reveals that Tigerclaw killed Redtail, Bluestar refuses to believe him and remains confident in her deputy. However, after Tigerclaw attempts to kill her, Fireheart saves Bluestar's life and is named deputy, while Tigerclaw is exiled. In light of Tigerclaw's betrayal, Bluestar's grief blinds her judgement, and she begins to distrust her Clanmates. After a fire destroys ThunderClan's territory, Bluestar adamantly insists that StarClan has betrayed them. She further believes WindClan has been stealing prey and prepares to launch an attack, but Fireheart manages to arrange a peace meeting behind her back, successfully stopping the battle. Bluestar feels betrayed, claiming she was leading a Clan of traitors, and speaks to Fireheart about his actions afterward.
Later, when RiverClan invades Sunningrocks, Bluestar is attacked by Mistyfoot and Stonefur, who Fireheart had discovered to be her kits, and he stops them from killing her by revealing her secret. While Bluestar begins to despise even Fireheart, she sacrifices herself to save him from the pack, falling into the gorge. Fireheart, Mistyfoot, and Stonefur drag her from the river, but Bluestar passes away, reconciling with her lost children and noting that she is in peace, now that her kits forgave her. She is free to join Oakheart in StarClan. In StarClan, Bluestar gives Firestar his final life for nobility, certainty, and faith.

The New Prophecy[]

"But remember, not even StarClan can turn aside the paws of destiny, however much we might want to."
―Bluestar comforting Cinderpelt Twilight, page 2
As a StarClan cat, Bluestar chooses Brambleclaw as the representative from ThunderClan to journey to the sun-drown-place and appears to him in a dream. In the lake territories, she appears to Cinderpelt in a dream at the Moonpool to tell the medicine cat that she will soon be joining them in StarClan. Sympathetic, Bluestar tells her that she will not face her death alone. In Leafpool's dream after she returns to ThunderClan, Bluestar informs her that she will walk a path few have walked before, and StarClan will be with her every step of the way.

Power of Three[]

Bluestar: "If I stay, we will argue."
Yellowfang: "So you still think we should keep the secret from them?"
Bluestar: "I understand your fears, Yellowfang. But for now this secret is safest kept with us."
Yellowfang: "Nothing but stubbornness."
—Bluestar and Yellowfang about the Three Eclipse, page 5
Leafpool meets Bluestar at the Moonpool and informs StarClan Graystripe had returned, bringing Brambleclaw's position of deputy into question. While pleased Graystripe was safe, Bluestar affirms that Firestar should listen to his head and not his heart and asks Leafpool to pass the message to her father. Later, she stubbornly insists that Yellowfang and Spottedleaf should keep the truth a secret from Lionpaw, Hollypaw, and Jaypaw. Yellowfang later attacks Bluestar for keeping it a secret for too long, but Bluestar insists she believes Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight were both good parents to the Three.

Omen of the Stars[]

"And I will die a tenth time to defend ThunderClan!"
―Bluestar vowing to fight the Dark Forest The Last Hope, page 4
Bluestar meets with other StarClan cats about the third cat in the prophecy after losing Hollyleaf. Yellowfang wants to send an omen to the third, firmly believing they have the right three. Bluestar disagrees, insisting the third cat is already powerful, but is outvoted. When Jayfeather tries to speak to Ashfur in StarClan, Bluestar stops him and reaffirms Ashfur's place in StarClan. She later meets with several Tribe of Endless Hunting cats to prepare for the final fight against the Dark Forest. After StarClan is united by the medicine cats, Bluestar participates in the Great Battle.

A Vision of Shadows[]

"We can't warn them more than we have. How many times have we told them that they must face the future together?"
―Bluestar to Firestar about the Clans The Raging Storm, page 4
At a meeting of former leaders, Bluestar gently encourages Firestar to speak his mind, but Crookedstar cautions her against that. Rowanclaw joins them, and Bluestar questions if his son, Tigerstar, would challenge SkyClan's place at the lake. She warns about the downfall of one Clan being the destruction of all, including StarClan and their existence, and dryly wonders how many times the Clans need to be told that peace is the answer.

"You are fire, Bluepaw, and you will blaze through the forest. But beware! Even the most powerful flames can be destroyed by water."
―Goosefeather to Bluepaw foreseeing her destiny Bluestar's Prophecy, page 209
In Bluestar's Prophecy, Bluekit is born to Moonflower and Stormtail alongside her sister Snowkit. She soon becomes an apprentice called Bluepaw with Stonepelt as her mentor. She struggles to focus on her training after her mother is killed in battle, and Sunfall, her new mentor, reminds her of her duty to the Clan. Bluepaw also befriends Crookedpaw, but soon learns that friendship cannot last with cats from other Clans. Goosefeather gives her a prophecy foretelling her downfall by water. As a warrior, Bluefur meets Oakheart, a RiverClan warrior, and they fall for each other. When Snowfur dies on the Thunderpath, Bluefur resolves to look after her son, Whitekit, despite his father, Thistleclaw's, objections. She doubts Thistleclaw further after he goads Tigerpaw into attacking a defenseless kit. Bluefur trains Frostpaw, and agrees to meet Oakheart at Fourtrees. She learns that she is pregnant, and Thrushpelt offers to let the Clan think he is the father. Bluefur gives birth to three kits, Mistykit, Stonekit, and Mosskit, and after seeing a vision of Thistleclaw drenched in blood, she decides to give up her kits to RiverClan. Mosskit dies on the journey, and Bluefur is chosen as the new ThunderClan deputy and later becomes leader.
In Crookedstar's Promise, Bluepaw meets Crookedpaw at a Gathering, and the two joke around and share their dreams about becoming leaders of their Clans. They soon end up in battle at Sunningrocks, and with the help of Snowpaw, she beats him. At a later Gathering, they meet again as warriors; Bluepaw is now Bluefur, and Crookedpaw is now Crookedjaw. During a later visit to RiverClan, she meets Crookedjaw again, who is now deputy, as part of a patrol to take back Sunningrocks without a fight. After they leave, Ottersplash asks Crookedjaw if Oakheart had seemed rather friendly with Bluefur as she had seen Oakheart talking to the ThunderClan warrior on their way back. When his brother brings Mistykit and Stonekit to RiverClan's camp, Crookedstar asks Oakheart if they're his and Bluefur's. Oakheart explains that she'd given them up so she could be ThunderClan's deputy instead of Thistleclaw.

Novellas[]

«She could think of only one reason: so that Bluefur could leave the nursery and take over as Clan deputy instead of Thistleclaw. This was a measure of how much she loved her Clanmates, and how much she feared Thistleclaw, even without seeing him in the Dark Forest.»
—Spottedpaw's thoughts when Bluefur gives up her kits Spottedleaf's Heart, chapter 10
In Spottedleaf's Heart, she and Thistleclaw bicker about Whitepaw wasting feathers and Tigerpaw learning battle moves too advanced for his age. Spottedpaw witnesses Thistleclaw order Tigerpaw to attack a tiny kit trespassing, but Bluefur objects to the kit as a reasonable threat. Bluefur agrees with Stormtail that her father was feeling well to go on a patrol despite Spottedpaw's claims. When her father becomes suddenly ill, Bluefur cares for him and thanks Spottedpaw for saving him. Spottedpaw, now a medicine cat apprentice, assists Bluefur with the birth of her kits, and suspects that Thrushpelt was not their father. She tries to convince Bluefur not to lose hope when Thistleclaw is suspected of becoming the next deputy. She watches Bluefur sneak her kits out of camp and trusts her to do the right thing.
In Redtail's Debt, Bluefur leads a patrol to attack RiverClan, but they are attacked by a hawk while crossing the Twoleg bridge. She orders her patrol to hide, but Redtail is caught in the open, and Tigerclaw saves him. Bluefur becomes deputy, and Redtail notes how solemn she's become after losing her kits. During a raid on WindClan, Bluefur is gravely injured, and Redtail calls a retreat, much to Tigerclaw's dismay. Moons later, Redtail becomes Bluestar's deputy, and Bluestar is hesitant to fight for Sunningrocks with very few warriors available. However, Tigerclaw convinces her to send a small patrol to mark the border.

Relationships[]

Moonflower[]

"No one's trying to pretend Moonflower's still alive. She walks with our ancestors now, in StarClan. But she's still watching you, as closely as she ever did. She'll never leave you, Bluepaw."
―Sunfall Bluestar's Prophecy, chapter 9
Moonflower is Bluestar's mother.[5] Her mother loved her daughters dearly and stayed close to them no matter what.[44] When she was killed, Bluepaw was only an apprentice and was devastated by the loss. She wanted her to be "where she can see her and talk to her."[45] Believing that her death was unnecessary, she blamed Goosefeather and Hawkheart for it.[45] Later, Moonflower gives her daughter one of her nine lives - love.[36]

Stormtail[]

Stormtail is Bluestar's father. He is characterized as being distant towards his kits. His first visit to Bluekit and Snowkit is awkward, and he doesn't talk much.[46] He only briefly congratulates them when they become apprentices.[47] Overall, he seems to only care for Bluefur's status as a warrior, as shown when his response to Snowfur's death is to tell Bluefur to focus on the Clan.[48]

Oakheart[]

"They can have a father if you want. I'll be here if you need me. I love you, Bluefur. Whatever happens, they'll always be my kits, too!"
―Oakheart Bluestar's Prophecy, page 454
Oakheart is Bluestar's mate, and the father of Mistystar, Stonefur, and Mosskit. Bluefur initially is hostile towards him and chases him off of ThunderClan territory. In Gatherings, however, she begins to warm up to him. She denies special feelings for him in front of her Clanmates. Strict in following the warrior code, Bluefur is reluctant to meet Oakheart when offered to do so.[49] This results in Bluefur having his kits, which she vows to raise alone. Oakheart respects her decision, but emphasizes that if she ever needs a father for the kits, he can help, showing that he cares about her.[50] Bluefur also entrusts him with their kits, Mistykit and Stonekit, in order to become deputy of ThunderClan. This further shows the trust in their relationship.[source?]

Thrushpelt[]

«Her faithful old friend had kept her secret until the very end, only ever speaking of the lost kits with the fond grief of a father.»
—Bluestar recalling Thrushpelt's devotion Bluestar's Prophecy, page 505
Thrushpelt is nice to Bluefur.[51] She does not realize he has feelings for her until Rosetail points it out.[52] He tells Bluefur that she would be a good mother, referring to Whitekit.[53] After Bluefur becomes pregnant with Oakheart's kits, Thrushpelt shows no jealousy or resentment, even offering to pretend to be the father.[54] Bluefur does not tell him the truth when she gives her kits away, and Thrushpelt grieves but never lets on he was not their father.[55] Bluestar thinks of him as her faithful old friend.[55]

Firestar[]

"Fire will save the Clan...you never understood, did you? Not even when I gave you your apprentice name, Firepaw. And I doubted it myself, when fire raged through our camp. Yet I see the truth now. Fireheart, you are the fire who will save ThunderClan. You will be a great leader. One of the greatest the forest has ever known. You will have the warmth of fire to protect your Clan and the fierceness of fire to defend it. You will be Firestar, the light of ThunderClan."
―Bluestar to Firestar A Dangerous Path, page 311
Bluestar was Firestar's mentor and former leader.[2] Bluestar often confided in him, telling him about Redtail, Mistystar, Stonefur, Oakheart, and Mosskit.[56][57] When Bluestar was dying, Firestar tried desperately to save her, and she told him about the 'Fire Will Save Our Clan' prophecy.[4] She ascended to StarClan where she gave him a life for courage, bravery, and nobility. When Firestar died, she welcomed him to StarClan.[58]

Goosefeather[]

Bluefur: "What about my loss?"
Goosefeather: "It is small compared with the fate of your Clan."
Bluefur: "I'll serve my Clan."
Goosefeather: "Good."
—Goosefeather on Bluefur's destiny and sacrifices Bluestar's Prophecy, page 494
Goosefeather was Bluestar's maternal uncle, and the two shared an uneasy relationship as Goosefeather had "predicted" that WindClan would attack ThunderClan, resulting in a battle that killed Bluestar's mother and Goosefeather's sister, Moonflower.[59] Bluefur struggled to overlook his public reputation of an unhinged elder, rather than her uncle, rarely keeping in contact.[60] Eventually he gave Bluestar a prophecy that she would "Like fire, [she] will blaze through the forest".[61] He prioritised her destined leadership above all else, even if Bluefur was hesitant. He was disappointed when she distracted herself with motherhood, pressuring her to rid of her litter. This leads to Mosskit's accidental death as Bluefur relocated them, creating another strain on hers and Goosefeather's relationship.[8]

Whitestorm[]

"I remember her smell and the warmth of lying beside her. Having you around kept her memory alive. You carried the same scent and sometimes, even now, I see my mother in the twitch of your whiskers or the flick of your tail."
―Whitestorm to Bluestar Bluestar's Prophecy, page 511-512

Quotes[]

Bluefur: "Enough, Thistleclaw! You've taught him a lesson. I'm sure he won't come back here again. Let him go."
Thistleclaw: "Traitor! You're a coward and a fool! I've never seen you once defend our borders. What kind of warrior are you? Do you know that RiverClan warrior?"
Bluefur: "He's called Oakheart. I've seen him at Gatherings."
Thistleclaw: "I didn't ask you if you knew who he was, I asked if you knew him. Better than the warrior code allows."
Bluefur: "Of course not."
Thistleclaw: "We need more patrols. It's too easy to invade. Too many invaders. Only fear will keep them out. We must mark the borders with the blood of our enemies."
—Thistleclaw confronting Bluefur Bluestar's Prophecy, page 459

Mosskit: "That's not fair! Thrushpelt said he caught it for us!"
Bluefur: "I'm your mother. If I say you've had enough to eat, then you have."
Stonekit: "That's not fair!"
Bluefur: "Life isn't fair."
—Bluefur arguing with her kits Spottedleaf's Heart, chapter 10

Spottedpaw: "Thistleclaw can't be that important to you! You have three other lives to think about now!"
Bluefur: "I love them so much. But I love my Clan, too. I could never wish they hadn't been born, but why now? What if my Clan needs me more than they do?"
