"There was so much arrogance in Thistleclaw's amber stare. What kind of warrior would he make? He was brave, he had proved that, but wariness pricked her belly. Pride had no place in a warrior's heart. Overconfidence could be dangerous, to his Clanmates as well as himself."

Chapter description[]

Bluefur asks Sunfall if she can join the sunhigh patrol, as she wants to check near Twolegplace to see if Pinestar has returned there again. The deputy notices that Bluefur has been volunteering for a lot of border patrols lately, and he suggests that she should lead a hunting patrol instead. Bluefur agrees, and she is both excited and nervous about leading a hunting patrol for the first time. Sunfall assigns Adderfang, Thistlepaw, Robinwing, and Smallear to be part of her patrol. Smallear's apprentice, Sweetpaw, is unable to join the patrol because she is still very sick.
When Thistlepaw hears that Bluefur is leading the hunting patrol, he is dismayed. Bluefur decides that the patrol will hunt at Snakerocks, and he criticizes her choice, saying with a sneer that it is infested with adders and foxes. The patrol sets off, and Thistlepaw once again criticizes the blue-gray she-cat, this time questioning the route she has chosen. He then questions why she is not taking a shortcut through a bramble bush, to which she snaps that they would lose their pelts if they went that way. Adderfang tells off his apprentice for constantly challenging Bluefur, telling him to save his energy for hunting.
Bluefur spots a thrush along the way and stops to hunt it, but before she can catch it, Thistlepaw loudly asks if they are going to hunt at Snakerocks, intentionally scaring off her prey. In response, Smallear and Adderfang both scold him. Once the patrol reaches Snakerocks, Bluefur assigns Thistlepaw to keep guard while she and the other warriors are hunting. The apprentice is sulky, complaining that he was given a boring job. He continues to try to sabotage Bluefur's patrol by pretending that he spots danger. He yowls to the patrol that he has seen a snake, then innocently says that it was just Smallear's tail. Bluefur manages to catches a mouse and then goes back to look for more prey. Thistlepaw starts yowling again, which annoys the blue-gray warrior. She ignores him, instead focusing on the rabbit she is hunting, which she manages to catch. Thistlepaw then yells very loudly that there is a dog, and Bluefur, hearing fear in his voice, realizes that the warning is genuine this time. She manages to make up the tree with her rabbit, and the other members of the patrol also make it to safety.
A Twoleg comes and calls the dog away. Bluefur and the rest of the patrol climb down from the trees and head home with their catch. However, as they reach the camp, Thistlepaw hears something and realizes the dog is coming back. The warriors are afraid that the dog will find ThunderClan's camp, so Bluefur decides to leave her rabbit out for the dog, hoping that this will be enough get it to stop following them. Thistlepaw, however, declares that he is not going to let a dog have their prey. Adderfang tries to call his apprentice back, but Thistlepaw ignores him and races towards the dog. He fights the dog skillfully, managing to send it fleeing.
Bluefur and Adderfang are impressed by Thistlepaw's bravery in fighting off the dog, as are Pinestar, Sunfall, and Stormtail, who have been watching from the entrance of the camp. The rest of the Clan is impressed as well when they hear the story, with Mumblefoot declaring that no cat had tried to fight a dog since the days of LionClan. Pinestar decides that it is time to make Thistlepaw a warrior. He performs the ceremony, giving Thistlepaw the warrior name Thistleclaw. Bluefur wonders what sort of warrior Thistleclaw will be, thinking that he is brave but also arrogant and overconfident. That night, the Clan feasts on the prey that the hunting patrols have brought back. Pinestar also makes a brief speech, saying that he could not be prouder of his Clan and thanking them. Bluefur is surprised by her leader's remarks, thinking that they sound like a farewell. She heads to her warriors' den, where she sees Thistleclaw curled up with Snowfur. Bluefur is disgusted and wishes Snowfur would pick a different tom to be her mate.
