"She pressed her muzzle into her former denmate's fur. The strange stillness of her body and the coldness of her pelt pierced Bluefur's heart. She had been beside a cat like this before - and all the wishing in the world hadn't brought Moonflower back."

Chapter Description[]

Bluefur runs out of her nest when she hear's Poppydawn's cry. She knows as she sees Poppydawn's eyes that Sweetpaw is dead. Bluefur presses her muzzle into the apprentice's fur, grief blurring her gaze. She remembers that she had been beside one other dead body - her mother's. Featherwhisker enters the den, and gently tells her to go outside, saying Sweetpaw would go to StarClan.
Poppydawn dully states she had died, and Bluefur nods. Thistleclaw enters the apprentice's den to see Sweetpaw. Rosepaw asks if her mother had been with her when she had died. Poppydawn answers she had been asleep, and when she had woken up Sweetpaw had smelled different. Bluefur understands, a memory surfacing of a scent of death that herbs could not hide.
Tigerkit comes out of the nursery, asking what had happened. Sunfall replies gravely that Sweetpaw had died. Tigerkit asks another question until Swiftbreeze carries him back into the nursery.
Goosefeather comes out of the fern tunnel, and wonders what is going on. Poppydawn breaks the news that Sweetpaw had died. The medicine cat sighs, saying that herbs couldn't heal when StarClan called. Featherwhisker agrees and supports his mentor. Dappletail speaks that the Clan was lucky they had Featherwhisker, not speaking of Goosefeather. Bluefur realizes that the Clan must've lost all faith in Goosefeather. She wonders if she had been foolish enough to believe Goosefeather's prophecy, since her Clanmates didn't trust him.
Dappletail offers to help Poppydawn to prepare Sweetpaw for the vigil. Poppydawn goes to get rosemary. Bluefur can't bear to see another cat prepared for their journey to StarClan, and looks away.
Sunfall orders for her, Lionpaw, Tawnyspots and Swiftbreeze, and lets Rosepaw join them for dawn patrol. Sunfall quietly tells her that even though Sweetpaw's death is sad, the Clan must carry on, and Bluefur knows he is right.
Sunfall hisses for them to stop, scenting RiverClan. Swiftbreeze quickly points out where the patrol is, and the fact that they had crossed the border. The deputy sends Lionpaw to warn the Clan that RiverClan is invading, promising they will attack as soon as the second patrol arrives. Bluefur prays the brambles will slow them down, and notices they are leaving markers. Swiftbreeze observes they don't know which way to head.
Rosepaw asks what their plan is, and Sunfall considers, after a moment replying that they wanted to attack a patrol to prove that the territory was theirs. Thrushpelt pushes through the ferns, reporting they had seen the patrol, suggesting they attack them where the undergrowth is thickest and play it to their advantage. Thrushpelt tells Sunfall that Stormtail, Thistleclaw, Fuzzypelt, Snowfur and Windflight are there.
The deputy shares his plan with them. Stormtail would lead the first patrol consisting of Patchpelt and Swiftbreeze, and attack first. Windflight would lead the second one, attacking after Stormtail's signal with Fuzzypelt, Thrushpelt and Thistleclaw. The remaining cats would attack with Sunfall after Windflight.
Shellheart stops his patrol, smelling ThunderClan. Timberfur starts speaking, but doesn't get to finish what he was saying, since Stormtail and his patrol attack. Windflight's patrol explodes from the bushes to join their Clanmates. Sunfall charges, and Bluefur follows the ThunderClan deputy, leaping onto Rippleclaw.
Bluefur is shaken off, and the RiverClan warrior curses as thorns slice his paw. Bluefur rakes his flank, and Rippleclaw swipes her muzzle. Snowfur is beside her in a flash, batting the black-and-silver tom hard. She rears up next to her sister, and the two start to fight together. Rippleclaw is driven into brambles, and as they nip at him, the panicked and confused warrior flees. She watches her Clanmates attack for a moment.
Bluefur lands on Shellheart's back, sinking her teeth into his shoulder. Bluefur is torn off, and she wrenches her forepaw, yowling. She spins around and sees Timberfur. She rears up to fight, but Snowfur is already dragging him back. Bluefur crashes into his belly and the brown warrior runs off to the border.
She hears Rosepaw's shriek, and the sisters run towards the sound to help. Finding her cornered, Bluefur takes on the bigger tom. Rosepaw lunges at the tom, then as Bluefur is forced to let go, ducks so the warrior cannot injure her. Snowfur drives off the other tom, and the three she-cats line up, advancing. They taunt him, then Bluefur sends a warning look to them to let him go. As the cats leave a gap in their ranks, the warrior pelts off.
Shellheart calls for retreat, and Bluefur chases the trespassers off ThunderClan territory. Sunfall asks if there are any serious injuries. Bluefur remembers her wrenched claw, and Thrushpelt reports a few scratches. Patchpelt complains of being bitten and smelling of fish for days. She stiffens as she sees Snowfur's pelt streaked red, and her sister tells her she is fine. Bluefur is relieved. Stormtail snarls that they shouldn't have tried it since they already had Sunningrocks.
Sunfall says they have to report to camp, and she overhears her father and the deputy talking. Stormtail is saying Pinestar should be here to back the attack up. Sunfall wonders where Pinestar is, and Bluefur feels that something is very wrong with Pinestar, leaving her uneasy.
