Chapter description[]

As Snowfur begins kitting, Bluefur calls for Featherwhisker, glad that her sister had not been alone with her mate. Thistleclaw begins tearing at Snowfur's nest, anxious, as Bluefur comforts the white queen, trying to not think of Leopardfoot's kitting and the loss of her two daughters shortly after. The mottled black queen scolds her surviving kit, Tigerkit, telling him to go play with Lionpaw as Featherwhisker enters. The medicine cat examines Snowfur, before asking Thistleclaw to collect water-soaked moss.
Bluefur, seeing the pain her sister is in, asks Featherwhisker if he can give her poppy seeds for the pain. He explains that she needs to be able to feel the pain, so they know when the kits are ready to be delivered. The day continues, with Snowfur becoming increasingly tired. Shortly afterwards, the first kit is born, Snowfur pulling him to her belly as Featherwhisker purrs. As Thistleclaw meets his son for the first time, he and Snowfur decide to name him Whitekit. Bluefur watches the pair, almost feeling fond of Thistleclaw as he promises to bring Snowfur the tastiest prey he can find.
The next morning, Snowfur wakes Bluefur up, showing her that Whitekit has already opened his eyes. When Tigerkit asks if they can leave the nursery, Bluefur reminds her sister that she made her go out the moment her eyes opened, too. Snowfur glares at Tigerkit before relenting, telling them to go no further than the clearing, and Bluefur promises to keep an eye on them while she rests. Bluefur reminisces about her first time out of the nursery, and how big everything seemed, as her former mentor, Stonepelt limps past. He jokingly reminds her to show Whitekit the warriors' den and tell him to stay out.
A half-moon later, Frostkit and Brindlekit are born to Robinwing. Tigerkit and Whitekit bring Frostkit and Brindlekit into the clearing to play. Bluefur offers to watch them, hurrying across camp to the medicine den before the kits can play with the herbs. Goosefeather hisses at the kits as Bluefur hurries to separate them, snarling at Tigerkit. Featherwhisker hurries towards them, dropping the moss he had been carrying, apologizing, and explaining that Goosefeather is having nightmares. Bluefur quickly herds the kits away as Goosefeather snarls to keep Tigerkit away from him.
