Below contains in-depth information for chapter forty-two of Bluestar's Prophecy. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
A moon has passed since Bluefur had left her kits with Oakheart. Having believed her story, ThunderClan searches for days for the missing kits, filling her with guilt as she tries to remind herself that she did it for the Clan. Adderfang asks her if she would like to go hunting, and Thrushpelt offers to join. She longs to tell him that two of the kits were alive and well in RiverClan, as he had worked harder than any other cat to find them and grieved as if he was truly their father. Deciding to hunt alone, Bluefur runs into Goosefeather, who tells her that she has done the right thing for her Clan. Sunstar finds her shortly afterwards, asking her to walk with him. She thinks about the other walks they have shared, after Moonflower and Snowfur's deaths. She asks if he's going to lecture her, and he shakes his head, telling her that he knows she'll be okay.
Sitting near a bramble thicket, he asks if she's ready to become the Clan's deputy. He continues on, explaining that Tawnyspots has asked to retire to the elders'den. Bluefur asks about Thistleclaw, finding that Sunstar shares her misgivings, and she accepts his offer. That evening, Sunstar announces Tawnyspots' retirement and appoints Bluefur as his new deputy, and the Clan cheers their support. After the ceremonies, Sunstar reveals to her that he only received eight lives at his leadership ceremony, due to Pinestar not giving up one of his lives. He goes on to explain that this was part of the reason he had chosen her to succeed him, and she assures him that she will give everything she has to serve her Clan.
Tawnyspots retires to the elders' den, and Bluefur replaces him as deputy.[6]
Ceremonies[]
Tawnyspots' elder ceremony
Sunstar:
Tawnyspots, ThunderClan thanks you for your loyalty and courage. You have served your Clan well, and we hope that your days in the elders' den are peaceful. Your stories and wisdom will still have a place in the Clan, and we will continue to learn from you.
Bluefur, you will be the ThunderClan deputy from this day forward. May StarClan grant you the courage to help your Clan face whatever lies in its path. And when the time comes for you to take my place, I pray you will shine at the head of our Clan.
