  • As Hailstar begins his report, he steps back, saying that Oakheart wanted to tell the Clans something.
    • Oakheart jumps up on the Great Rock and tells the Clans about how Twolegs moved onto their land, and tells them they have a plan if they came too near RiverClan's camp.
  • Bluefur is annoyed to see that Rosetail had taken a liking to Oakheart.
  • As the Gathering ends, Bluefur hurries away but Sunstar catches up to her.
    • He tells her that he was pleased that she chose to come, and that he wished she would choose to help her Clan, rather than be a burden.
      • Before he leaves, he tells her that ThunderClan might need her gifts one day.
  • Bluefur remembers Goosefeather's prophecy about fire.

  • Bluefur has a nightmare. She dreams that a gust of wind brings her over to the edge of the gorge.
    • Looking down, she sees a mass of white fur in the raging water.
  • Bluefur sees that it is Snowfur, and hears her sister calling out, "Whitekit!"
    • She sees Whitekit farther down the gorge.
  • Bluefur races to the end of the gorge, and wades into the water in time to save Whitekit.
  • She wakes up suddenly, and hurriedly goes down to the nursery.

  • He crosses out of ThunderClan territory, with Bluefur following.
    • All she can smell is the faint scent of a kit, and tries to convince him just to go back to hunting.
  • Thistleclaw accuses Bluefur of being disloyal, and too soft, saying that he needed proof that she was before he let her near Whitekit.

  • Bluefur leaves, angered by Thistleclaw's threats, and heads back to camp.
    • She goes straight to the nursery to see Whitekit.
      • She sees that he was asleep, and leaves the nursery.
  • Thrushpelt comes over, asking how the hunting went.
    • He tells her that she has done a good job with Whitekit.
  • Feeling uncomfortable, Bluefur leaves him and goes to Rosetail.
    • She tells her what a great couple she and Thrushpelt make.
      • Bluefur denies that anything was happening between her and Thrushpelt.

    • He also performs a ceremony to move Poppydawn to the elders' den.
      • Sunstar finishes by appointing Adderfang as the temporary deputy while Tawnyspots was ill.
  • Goosefeather requests that Bluefur gather herbs with him, and takes her out into the forest.
    • He asks her if she has thought anymore on the prophecy.
    • He goes on, telling her that Tawnyspots wouldn't die yet, and there was still time for her to become deputy if she concentrated on nothing else.
  • Goosefeather then sends Bluefur back to camp.
  • She meets up with Thrushpelt again near the fresh-kill pile.
    • He starts talking about who would be the next deputy after Tawnyspots, but shows no ambition himself, frustrating Bluefur as she thought of Oakheart.
  • She leaves him, and goes over to Rosetail.
    • Rosetail points out that she had never seen a cat as disappointed as Thrushpelt.
  • Tigerpaw returns to camp and shows a battle move he had learned.
    • All of the cats admire him, while Goosefeather apologizes to StarClan, saying that Tigerpaw should never have survived.

  • Bluefur plays with Robinwing's kits.
  • Sunstar sends her on border patrol with Thistleclaw and Tigerpaw.
    • They find Tiny on ThunderClan territory.
      • Tigerpaw challenges him and almost kills him, although Bluefur stops him.
  • She vows never to let Thistleclaw take over ThunderClan.

  • Whitepaw receives his warrior name, Whitestorm.
  • Tigerpaw is also a warrior, Tigerclaw.
    • Whitestorm's mentor had been Patchpelt instead of Bluefur.
    • Thistleclaw had established himself as a senior warrior and so has Tigerclaw.
  • Bluefur visits Larksong to tell her about the ceremony as she had promised.

    • She thinks how she was a traitor for doing this, but keeps moving.
  • Moonflower and Snowfur come to Bluefur, silently telling her to go back.
    • Bluefur brushes past them, insisting that she had to do this.

  • Bluefur is delighted to see that Oakheart had waited for her.
    • She panics when they can't think of anything to say, but then starts a race to the top of an oak.
  • Oakheart tells her that RiverClan can't climb trees, so Bluefur shows him how.

    • Bluefur promises to Moonflower and Snowfur that she wouldn't meet Oakheart like that again.
  • Sunstar assigns Goldenflower to lead Bluefur, Thrushpelt, and Patchpelt to check the Twoleg border.
    • It is revealed that Tawnyspots is sick again, but worse this time.
  • Thrushpelt tries to compliment Bluefur on her hunting techniques.
    • She wonders why he sounds so annoying and his enthusiasm clumsy.
  • Back at camp, the cats begin to wonder if Tawnyspots will recover.
    • Thistleclaw announces that it is time for him to be deputy.

  • ThunderClan returns from a Gathering.
    • Leopardfoot tells Bluefur that Hailstar lost his ninth life to a rat bite, and Crookedstar was leader now.
    • Bluefur is confused to hear that Crookedstar had passed up his own brother and given the deputy position to Timberfur.
  • Leopardfoot goes on to say that a new ShadowClan apprentice, Brokenpaw had gotten into a fight and Oakheart had broken them up.
  • She suddenly tells Bluefur that she knows that Bluefur is expecting kits.
    • Bluefur is horrified by this, and Rosetail excitedly asks if the father was Thrushpelt.
      • Bluefur begs her not to say anything to him about the kits.
  • She goes to Sunstar to be excused from patrols.
  • Bluefur goes out to the RiverClan border and sees Oakheart with Owlfur and Ottersplash.
    • Oakheart sends his Clanmates away and speaks with Bluefur.
  • He is shocked to hear that she was having his kits.
    • He tells her that it would work out, that she could come to RiverClan, or he ThunderClan.
      • He reveals that this had happened to Windflight, who was half WindClan.
  • Bluefur tells him that she will raise the kits alone in ThunderClan and keep their father hidden.
    • Oakheart says that the kits would always be his and that he still loved Bluefur.

  • Rosetail tells Thrushpelt that he was the father of Bluefur's kits.
    • He confronts Bluefur, and she is mortified, but tells him that he wasn't.
  • He then offers to tell the Clan that he is the father.
  • They hear a screech, and find Oakheart being attacked by Thistleclaw and Tigerclaw.
    • Bluefur begs that they let Oakheart go, to which Thistleclaw points out that it wasn't a kit, but an enemy warrior.
  • As she sees blood, Bluefur shoves the warriors off of Oakheart.
    • Thistleclaw demands to know if she knew the RiverClan warrior, to which Bluefur denies.
  • Just before a ThunderClan patrol arrives, Thistleclaw goes insane for a moment, saying that the borders had to be marked with the blood of their enemies.
  • Bluefur tries to tell Sunstar about Thistleclaw's cruelty and her worries about his ambition.
    • Sunstar cuts her off, saying that she shouldn't get involved in border skirmishes until her kits are born.
  • He goes on, telling Bluefur that he had hoped that she would follow in his footsteps, but there was another warrior who could someday lead the clan. He looks at Thistleclaw while saying this.
    • Bluefur is very shocked, and can't let Thistleclaw lead ThunderClan.

  • Bluefur is close to having her kits, being watched on by the other queens
    • Featherwhisker shows his new apprentice, Spottedpaw, how to feel for contractions, just before the kits are born.
  • Snowfur comes to Bluefur, helping her through the kitting.
  • White-eye had given birth to Runningkit and Mousekit.
  • Goosefeather had retired to the elders' den finally.
  • Half a moon later, in the middle of a harsh leaf-bare, Bluefur's kits are playing in the clearing when a hunting patrol returns with almost nothing.
  • Goosefeather tells Bluefur that he saw her and Oakheart by Fourtrees, and that Oakheart should take the kits because fire must burn without bonds.
    • She asks Featherwhisker how Tawnyspots was doing, and he steadily confirms that he was not getting better.
    • Bluefur looks over at Thistleclaw and sees a vision of him drenched in blood.
    • Goosefeather confirms that he had seen this as well.
  • At the Gathering, Bluefur finds Oakheart.
    • He proudly asks how the kits are and what they looked like.
  • Bluefur tells him that she can't keep the kits and that he must take them.
    • He hesitates, but agrees to take them at Sunningrocks the next night.

  • Bluefur wakes up Mistykit, Stonekit, and Mosskit, and tells them that they are going to play 'Secret Escape.'
    • She leads them out of the nursery, and then, camp, and into the forest.
  • Bluefur wants her kits to remember the forest, and teaches them the hunting crouch.
  • Halfway there, all three kits began to tire, saying that they no longer wanted to play.
    • Bluefur digs a hole in the ground to shelter her kits from the wind, then goes and digs another a little farther away.
    • The kits become frightened until Bluefur comes back.
  • Bluefur promises that she will always come back to them, but chokes, knowing it was a lie.
  • She then digs holes all the way to Sunningrocks, moving the kits to each one.
  • Bluefur is horrified to see that Mosskit wouldn't wake up and was dead.
    • Snowfur appears and promises to take care of Mosskit.
  • Bluefur lets her remaining kits sleep a while longer, and goes to make sure Oakheart's waiting.
    • She takes Mistykit and Stonekit to meet Oakheart.
  • Oakheart asks where the third kit was, and Bluefur chokes out "dead" before running off.
    • Stonekit and Mistykit call after her, asking where she was going and if she was coming back for them.
  • Bluefur slips back into the nursery, tearing a hole in the back, before calling an alarm that her kits were gone.

  • Adderfang asks Bluefur if she'd like to join a hunting patrol.
  • Bluefur remembers the past moon; how the nursery had been fortified with extra brambles and two warriors sat guard because the Clan had believed her story about a fox stealing her kits.
  • She feels guilty, wondering if Mosskit hates her for giving up her life.
  • She goes hunting alone, catching a squirrel. Goosefeather finds her, and he knows that her two kits are alive. He tells her that her loss is small compared to the fate of her Clan.
    • Bluefur promises to serve her Clan, and goes to find Sunstar, who is looking for her.
  • He walks with her, and shows her that life goes on. They stop, and Sunstar asks if she will take on the deputyship.
    • Bluefur tells him she's ready.
  • A little later, Sunstar performs two ceremonies; one retiring Tawnyspots to the elders' den, and the other making Bluefur the new deputy.
    • Thistleclaw yowls loudly in support, but his eyes are gleaming with fury.
  • Bluefur speaks to Sunstar in his den, saying she's ready to learn.
    • While they are being honest with each other, he shares with her that StarClan gave him only eight lives, as Pinestar still had his ninth life.
  • Bluefur tells him she will give every breath in her body to serve her Clan, though regret tugs at her belly. But she knows that she is fire, and that is the path she must follow.

  • Featherwhisker is seen taking Bluefur to the Moonstone for her new name and nine lives.
  • Bluefur remembers how Sunstar had died, after being weakened by illness, he had been unable to outrun a dog that had roaming the forest.
    • She also remembers the slow, agonizing death of Tawnyspots.
  • Bluefur falls asleep at the Moonstone, and wakes up, finding herself at Fourtrees.
    • Cats of StarClan begin to appear before her, and she recognizes Pinestar and Snowfur among them, along with Moonflower and Mosskit.
  • Pinestar steps forward, and gives her the gift of compassion.
    • A jolt of pain goes through Bluefur, but fades away.
  • Mumblefoot gives her the gift of endurance
  • Larksong gives her the gift of humor.
  • Sweetpaw gives her the gift of hope.
  • Sunstar gives her the gift of courage, stating that she would know how to use it.
  • Goosefeather approaches next, giving Bluefur the gift of patience.
  • After him, Mosskit gives Bluefur the gift of trust to believe in herself and her Clan.
  • Moonflower steps forward then, giving her daughter the gift of love to cherish her Clan like she did her kits.
  • Bluefur's ninth life is from Snowfur, as her sister gives her the gift of pride.
    • She thanks Bluestar for raising Whitestorm, and tells her that she was chosen a long time ago to lead her Clan.

  • Bluestar sits on the Highrock with Redtail, her deputy.
  • Bluestar notices a fourth apprentice, Ravenpaw, busy stripping a leaf from its stem.
    • She remembers how nervous Ravenpaw had been from the moment he had been born, and how she had given him Tigerclaw for a mentor in hopes that he would learn to be a fearless warrior.
  • Redtail asks if she remembers her first moon of training.
    • Bluestar nods, and remembers how many cats had gone since then.
      • She also thinks of Thistleclaw, and how he had died as he lived, chasing RiverClan intruders over the border and being found in a pool of blood.
  • She thinks of how proud she was of Mistyfoot and Stonefur, and of Oakheart and Graypool for raising them so well.
  • Bluestar points out how old she was getting, because her white hairs, some of which she blames on Thistleclaw.
    • Because of him, Bluestar has lied to her Clan about her remaining lives.
  • Just then, she sees Spottedleaf emerge from her den, now the sole medicine cat since Featherwhisker's death from greencough.
  • The medicine cat had taken care of White-eye, now One-eye, when she had lost her blind eye completely, and Sparrowpelt, now Halftail, who had lost the end of his tail to a badger.
  • She then thinks of the countless battles over Sunningrocks, how they had both won and lost, and forced to run back to a camp that held too many elders and too few apprentices.

  • The evening of a particularly bad battle against RiverClan over Sunningrocks, Bluestar sat alone in the clearing of camp.
    • Spottedleaf joins her and tells her the Mousefur will recover.
  • A shooting star passes overhead suddenly.
    • Spottedleaf tells Bluestar that it was a sign from StarClan: "Fire alone can save our Clan."
  • Uneasily, Bluestar admits that she was once the fire who would save the Clan.
  • A moon passes, and Bluestar travels through the forest with Whitestorm.
    • He tells her that she has been a good leader, strong and fair.
  • As they near Twolegplace, Bluestar sees a ginger kittypet tom crouched on a fence, staring out into the forest with interest in his green eyes.
    • She and Whitestorm watch as he stalks a blackbird, but misses.
    • Bluestar thinks that he may be the fire Spottedleaf had spoken of.
  • Back at camp, she tells Spottedleaf of the kittypet.
    • She tells the medicine cat that she will have Graypaw stalk him and see how the kittypet will react, and if he showed promise, she will invite him to the Clan.
    • Spottedleaf tells her that he will pass every test set for him, that Bluestar would choose him, and never regret it.
  • Bluestar feels Snowfur's scent around her, and silently tells Goosefeather that he was right - a fire would blaze through the forest after all.
