The chapter begins with Rock telling Mosskit, Adderkit, and Blossomkit about ThunderClan. Rock says that to many, ThunderClan is the noblest of the Clans, home of the heroes. He states that he takes no sides; all of the Clans have their different strengths and weaknesses, which differ from story to story.
Rock says that ThunderClan cats are impressive hunters; he even envies them, but a life under trees would not suit him. He states that ThunderClan has the skills to be silent so they can hunt small creatures that live in the underbrush. He asks the kits if they've all heard of the hunter's crouch, and explains it is when a cat gathers their strength into their hindquarters before leaping. He tells them that it is a ThunderClan trick, and that no other Clan uses it.
Rock says that ThunderClan has always been the fiercest guardian of the warrior code. He says that if another Clan breaks it, one would think every ThunderClan cat is wounded by it. Rock continues, saying that no cat could accuse ThunderClan of being afraid to fight, as long as they believe the fight is justified, unlike others, who seem to love shedding blood. Rock quiets Blossomkit, asking if he had mentioned ShadowClan's name.
Rock states that the Clan has had its fair share of border trouble, explaining how ThunderClan and RiverClan fight over Sunningrocks almost every season. He tells the kits how the rocks once belonged to RiverClan, because they were on their side of the river. He says the course of the river changed, joining the rocks to dry land on the ThunderClan side of the river. He states that both Clans have had claim over the rocks since then.
Rock continues telling of ThunderClan's border troubles, even with the Clans living at the lake. He says that ThunderClan has been facing a constant threat from ShadowClan on their shared border. He tells the kits how Firestar has granted ShadowClan hunting rights on a small clearing on their border, and states that some cats think it is a wise move because little prey can be found there. He says this is another reason for ThunderClan to proclaim how fair and generous they are. He says he wonders just how long ShadowClan will be happy with the addition to their territory.
Rock then goes on to telling the three kits about a few ThunderClan cats.
Rock begins telling the kits about Firestar. He tells Adderkit that he knows the ThunderClan leader was a kittypet, but it makes no difference to him where a cat takes his first breath.
