"No, Mapleshade, you are wrong. I still have a Clan that I love, and am proud to lead, and now... now everything precious to me is here, in StarClan. My family is waiting here for me, when my ninth life has passed. [...] I still have the cats that I loved. I know they are watching over me. You have nothing. And no one."
— Crookedstar to Mapleshade in Crookedstar's Promise, comic

Crookedstar is a huge, light brown tabby tom[18] with green eyes[19] and a twisted jaw.[18]

Crookedstar was a RiverClan leader in the forest territories. He was born as Stormkit to Rainflower and Shellheart alongside his brother, Oakkit. Following an accident in which he broke his jaw, Stormkit was renamed Crookedkit at the request of Rainflower. She disowned him, leading to Crookedkit running away from the Clan. After returning, he was apprenticed as Crookedpaw to Cedarpelt. He was continually visited in his dreams by Mapleshade, who trained him and demanded he stay loyal to RiverClan above all else.

After becoming a warrior, Crookedjaw learned Mapleshade was from the Dark Forest and cut ties with her. However, she orchestrated an omen which allowed him to be selected as deputy, and Crookedstar succeeded Hailstar as leader. He became mates with Willowbreeze, but after the birth of their kits, she succumbed to greencough alongside Minnowkit and Willowkit. Not long after the death of their only remaining kit, Silverstream, Crookedstar himself died of greencough, ascending to StarClan and gave Mistystar one of her nine lives.

The Prophecies Begin

"I feel that this is best for our Clan. For all the Clans. There are plenty of fish in the river. It is better to share our prey than to spill blood fighting over it."
―Crookedstar yielding to Brokenstar's demand for the river Into the Wild, pages 151-152
Crookedstar is the leader of RiverClan. He attends Firepaw's first Gathering where Graypaw points him out among the other leaders. For the good of his Clan, he allows for ShadowClan to hunt in the river, fearing Brokenstar would drive his Clan out like WindClan. Crookedstar's only daughter, Silverstream, begins meeting secretly with Graystripe of ThunderClan, and he knows nothing of it, except that a single ThunderClan warrior has been repeatedly scented on his territory. He forms an alliance with ShadowClan when WindClan returns in hopes of keeping their territory for themselves.
When the river floods, his Clan is forced to evacuate their camp. Fireheart and Graystripe save two of Mistyfoot's kits, and his deputy, Leopardfur, is hesitant about the validity of their story. Crookedstar believes them and reluctantly accepts their offer to bring RiverClan prey until they can recover. When he hears the news of Silverstream's death, he orders Leopardfur to retrieve Stormkit and Featherkit from ThunderClan. Graystripe, the kits' father, goes with them. When a fire rages through ThunderClan's territory, Crookedstar allows them to shelter in RiverClan's camp. He loses his last life to greencough, and Leopardfur succeeds him as leader.

"I'm sorry I can't make you proud of me. But I haven't finished yet. I'll do everything I can to make you glad I'm your son. You'll never make me ashamed of who I am or what I look like."
―Crookedjaw to Rainflower Crookedstar's Promise, pages 227-228
In Crookedstar's Promise, Stormkit is born to Rainflower and Shellheart, the RiverClan deputy, alongside his brother, Oakkit during a storm. When Stormkit breaks his jaw after slipping into the river, Rainflower rejects him and has him renamed to Crookedkit. Crookedkit remains in the nursery while Oakpaw begins his apprenticeship, and Crookedkit attempts to contact StarClan at the Moonstone, but is stopped by Mapleshade, who visits him in a dream to urge him to return to RiverClan. After spending some time as a loner, Crookedkit returns to his Clan and is apprenticed to Cedarpelt. In exchange for making him a great warrior — potentially even leader — Mapleshade makes Crookedpaw promise to put his Clan before everything else. He earns his warrior name of Crookedjaw and is appointed mentor to Sedgepaw.
When Shellheart retires, Crookedjaw is chosen to succeed him after Mapleshade fabricates an omen by breaking a squirrel's jaw. Crookedjaw ends his training with her when he learns she is of the Place of No Stars. Mapleshade reveals that Crookedjaw is the great-grandson of her former mate, Appledusk, who left her for a RiverClan she-cat and let her kits drown. In revenge, she vowed to make his lineage suffer. Crookedstar takes up leadership after the death of Hailstar. His mate, Willowbreeze, gives birth to Willowkit, Minnowkit, and Silverkit, but she, Willowkit, and Minnowkit die of greencough. Crookedstar remains RiverClan's leader for many moons, succumbing to greencough and reuniting with his family in StarClan.
In Bluestar's Prophecy, Crookedpaw meets Bluepaw, a ThunderClan apprentice, at the Gathering. The two instantly befriend each other and crack jokes during the Gathering. The two share their ambitions of becoming leaders of their Clans one day. During a battle at Sunningrocks not long after, Bluepaw is shocked by Crookedpaw's ease to confront her in battle. The two become friendly again at the next Gathering when they both have their warrior names, and Bluefur jokingly guessed if his warrior name was Crookedjaw. Bluefur develops a relationship with Crookedjaw's brother, Oakheart. Crookedjaw and Bluefur later become deputy and leader together.

Mapleshade: "Maybe I was a little harsh, but I was frightened that you were forgetting your destiny. I want you to be the greatest warrior RiverClan has ever known-the greatest any Clan will ever know. Willowpaw is a sweet, pretty cat and I'm not surprised you're fond of her. But the sweetest traps are often the most dangerous. She will soften you and sway you from your course. You do still want to be a great warrior, don't you?"
Crookedjaw: "Yes!"
Mapleshade: "Very good. That is all I ask. Everything I do, Crookedjaw, I do with your best interests at heart."
—Mapleshade manipulating Crookedjaw into doing what she wants Crookedstar's Promise, pages 236-237

Mapleshade: "I saw greatness in you the moment you were born. You don't remember the storm, but I saw it. I saw how the skies heaved and roared at your birth. You have a wonderful destiny, you're not just going to be the greatest leader of your Clan, you're going to be the greatest leader of any Clan. But you have to keep your promise to me."
Crookedjaw: "Of course I will."
Mapleshade: "You'll have to make sacrifices, your life is not your own; it belongs to your Clan. Don't be distracted from all the wonderful things you can achieve."
—Mapleshade lying to Crookedjaw Crookedstar's Promise, page 312

"My Clan means more to me than anything in the world. I know I'm young, but I promise to learn. I promise to grow wiser and stronger and do everything I can to help my Clan."
―Crookedjaw while accepting his position as deputy Crookedstar's Promise, page 387

Crookedstar: "Really! Don't pretend you understand how I feel, because you don't!"
Oakheart: "No, I don't! But I do understand there's a kit in there whose father doesn't want anything to do with her. How can you lead a Clan when you won't even take responsibility for your own kit?"
Crookedstar: "Like you did?"
Oakheart: "Like I've done! I don't know how you can let her grow up thinking you don't love her. You, more than anyone, should know how terrible that feels. But you're doing it to your own kit."
—Oakheart accusing Crookedstar of ignoring Silverkit Crookedstar's Promise, page 489

Silverkit: "You're really just training? Do you promise?"
Crookedstar: "I promise. I'm your father, Silverkit, and that means I will always keep my promises."
