Spottedpaw spots her fighting Thistleclaw in the Place of No Stars, overseen by Mapleshade. She notes her tattered, shredded ears, and the white hairs on her muzzle, suggesting she is older than the rest, and how her paws keep losing their grip. Spottedpaw waits for Thistleclaw to flip her over and announce his victory, but he keeps playing with her like wounded prey, letting her get back to her feet after every blow. Spottedpaw, in horror, sees that the she-cat isn't fox-red at all; she is a light brown tabby, covered in blood.
Fenneldust has a deep flank wound and visible teeth marks on her spine, as Thistleclaw presses her down to the ground with a paw. Her paws try to find a grip, but she is too weak, and starts to sink to the ground on her belly under the pressure. Spottedpaw bursts out of the bushes she is hiding in, yowling that he is killing the she-cat. He tells her to leave, but Spottedpaw knocks him backwards and presses her paws against the flank wound. Despite Spottedpaw's efforts, Fenneldust starts fading until she vanishes, leaving Spottedpaw touching nothing but the wet ground. Looking at Thistleclaw in horror, she asks him where the other she-cat had gone.
Spottedpaw hisses that she had come there to tell Thistleclaw that Thrushpelt had asked her if she had wanted to be a medicine cat, to which she had said no. She tells him that the Dark Forest had done something terrible to him, and he is murdering helpless cats. Thistleclaw retorts that Fenneldust wasn't helpless, and she had fought as hard as he did. Shaking her head, the apprentice says she didn't, as she had died.
