"If I'm bloodying my paws already, why stop at one cat?"
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, Wind. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"Many cats died, including my own daughter, Needletail. I mourn her every day, and regret that I didn't do more to save her. So many cats were killed, in fact, that our whole Clan's way of life almost collapsed and disappeared into nothing. You almost missed being raised as a Clan cat. If Tigerheart hadn't found us near the abandoned Twoleg den where we were sheltering, we would still be living there as rogues. And we were there because I followed Darktail away from ShadowClan. It was the worst decision I ever made, and I'll never stop regretting it. That evil cat did his best to destroy our Clan, and he took the thing most precious to me. I can't let that happen again. I'll protect ShadowClan with my last breath!"
— Berryheart to Sunbeam in Shadow, page 173

Berryheart is a black-and-white she-cat[13] with amber eyes.[17]

Berryheart is the current deputy of RiverClan under Splashtail's leadership in the lake territories. She was born to Snowbird and Scorchfur in ShadowClan as Berrykit, along with her littermates Rippletail and Cloverfoot. She was apprenticed as Berrypaw and later earned her warrior name of Berryheart. She became mates with Sparrowtail and bore their daughter, Needletail. After her daughter sparked a rebellion within ShadowClan, Berryheart left her Clan with the newly named Needletail, Cloverfoot, and Beepaw to join the Kin under Darktail. However, Berryheart realized Darktail's darker intentions, and he attempted to drown her, but she survived and fled the lake. She was soon reunited with Sparrowtail, Cloverfoot, and Slatefur, and they lived as rogues until they were discovered by Tigerheart. Berryheart and her family joined him on his trek back to ShadowClan, where Berryheart gave birth to hers and Sparrowtail's second litter, Spirekit, Sunkit, and Hollowkit. Because of her past, Berryheart instilled within her kits the importance of following the warrior code. When changes to the warrior code were proposed and Tigerstar took over RiverClan, Berryheart disapproved of her son Spireclaw's mate, Fringewhisker from SkyClan, and plotted with Splashtail for RiverClan's freedom, vowing no other cat would destroy the Clan she loved so much. Berryheart was exiled after questioning and challenging Tigerstar's leadership at a Gathering, though she later rose as Splashtail's new deputy.

A Vision of Shadows

Needlepaw: "Is WindClan our friend now? I thought ShadowClan stood alone. The only truce we recognize is the truce of the Gathering. Why deny ourselves prey on WindClan's behalf?"
Berryheart: "Would WindClan do the same for us?"
—When Rowanstar denies Darktail's rogues joining ShadowClan Thunder and Shadow, page 172
Berryheart is mates with Sparrowtail, and they have a single daughter named Needlepaw. She agrees with the majority of ShadowClan that Rowanstar is not a strong leader, and leaves with her littermate Cloverfoot and younger sister Beepaw to join Darktail. She eventually realizes her mistake, and after Darktail attempts to drown her, she escapes with Sparrowtail and meets up with Cloverfoot and Slatefur, where they run away to an abandoned Twoleg nest. She falls pregnant again soon after, and discovers Tigerheart, where he rejects the four cats as traitors, but realizes they have acknowledged their wrongs and they join his patrol. She gives birth to Spirekit, Hollowkit, and Sunkit. Berryheart later rejoins ShadowClan under Tigerstar, and reunites with the rest of her family.

A Starless Clan

"But I have to ask: Are cats being too quick to give up on finding love within their own Clans? And if cats are that eager to change Clans for love, how long will it be before they start finding other reasons to change? How long before there's so much change that there are no real Clans anymore? I love the pride of ShadowClan. I love the way we do what we want and we don't need to rely on any other Clan. Leaving my Clan to follow Darktail was the biggest mistake I ever made. It means everything to me that I am now a true ShadowClan warrior, and it frightens me to think that I might be in danger of losing that."
―Berryheart at the Gathering River (book), pages 206-207
Because of her experiences with Darktail, Berryheart is heavily against the changes to the warrior code. When the code is changed to allow cats to change Clans to be with their mate and the SkyClan warrior Fringewhisker leaves her Clan to be with Spireclaw, Berryheart is dismayed. She had hoped Spireclaw would select a ShadowClan mate but now she'll have half-Clan kin. Berryheart decides that the Clan needs a reminder why the warrior code forbade half-Clan relationships, and invites her daughter Sunbeam to join in on the discussions. When Rowankit dies from greencough, Berryheart sees the tragedy as evidence that Fringewhisker doesn't belong in ShadowClan. Berryheart berates Nightheart when he joins ShadowClan to be with Sunbeam, and she did her best to create three increasingly difficult and dangerous tasks for Nightheart and Fringewhisker in hopes of driving them away. Sunbeam grows tired of her mother's hostility towards Nightheart and Fringewhisker, though despised arguing with her. Berryheart, Whorlpelt, and Yarrowleaf also speak with Splashtail, Mallownose, and Duskfur about ShadowClan's occupation of RiverClan.
When Sunbeam becomes a ThunderClan warrior, Berryheart angrily arrives and demands she return to ShadowClan. Sunbeam refuses to leave ThunderClan, saying that she is loyal to her new Clan and mate Nightheart. Berryheart ignores her daughter at a Gathering when she tries to talk to her. When Berryheart questions and challenges Tigerstar’s leadership in front of the Clans, he exiles her from ShadowClan, saying that if she returns, she will be distrusted among her former Clanmates.

Warning: Rippletail's appearances in Tigerheart's Shadow are a mistake as confirmed by Kate Cary and further installments in the canon. Slatefur was meant to be in the patrol traveling with Tigerheart.
«The giant bird is like a nightmare—a cluster of claws and feathers and rage. But even as my mate and I scramble and fight and try to keep it from killing us... I can't help but understand. This is a mother protecting her young. Protecting her family. Something I wasn't able to do. Our Clan, our daughter...maybe our whole forest...Darktail has taken everything. And what can we do to stop him? Nothing.»
—Berryheart's regret at not protecting Needletail Tigerheart's Shadow, comic
In Tigerheart's Shadow, after being unsuccessfully drowned by Darktail for trying to leave the Kin, Berryheart meets up with Sparrowtail and the two exchange worries over their daughter Needletail. They run away and find Cloverfoot and Rippletail have escaped as well, and the four run away from the lake. They are encountered by Tigerheart, Spire, and Dovewing. She, along with her mate and littermates, join Tigerheart and his patrol back to ShadowClan. However, they are forced to stop when Spire dies and Berryheart comes close to giving birth, and she names her kits Sunkit, Hollowkit and Spirekit, the latter out of honor of Spiresight. She later rejoins ShadowClan when Tigerheart becomes leader and reunites with her parents and other siblings.

Quotes

Cloverfoot: "What we were thinking? How could we have let this happen? Supported a cat like Darktail?"
Rippletail: "We believed him. That's all. He said he was the strongest, and we went along."
Cloverfoot: "And now ShadowClan is gone because of it. Because of him...because of us."
Rippletail: "Well, stupid mistakes or not...Berryheart, I thought we'd never see you again. I'm so glad you're all right!"
Berryheart: "That's the trouble, Rippletail. I'm not all right. None of us are. But we can be. StarClan will guide us. We just...we can't give up. As long as we don't give up, sooner or later...StarClan will guide us home."
—Cloverfoot, Rippletail, and Berryheart admitting their mistakes Tigerheart's Shadow, comic

"But I always imagined Spireclaw with a ShadowClan cat—I even had a few in mind. They would have made beautiful ShadowClan kits together but now, I'll have half-Clan kin whose mother will always have one paw back in SkyClan. And all because of this stupid sham of a test!"
―Berryheart about changes being made to the warrior code River (book), page 222

"The warrior code forbade this for a reason. Maybe the Clan just needs a reminder."
―Berryheart River (book), page 223

"You know Berryheart, If she believes she’s right, she won't let anything stop her."
―Sunbeam to Nightheart about Berryheart Wind (book), chapter 3
