"We followed Brokenstar into battle against WindClan because WindClan killed Raggedstar, and they needed to be punished. But now it seems like the battles are never going to stop. We just want to live in the real ShadowClan again..." |
— Cinderfur to Nightpelt about Brokenstar's reign in Forest of Secrets, page 184 |
Cinderfur is a scarred,[9] thin gray tom[2] with orange eyes.[9]
Cinderfur was an elder of ShadowClan under Nightstar's leadership. He was born as Cinderkit to Clawface and Rowanberry alongside his brother, Stumpykit. He became an apprentice as Cinderpaw with Nutwhisker as his mentor. He earned his warrior name, Cinderfur, and later fathered Ashheart's kits—Turtlekit, Rubblekit, and Quietkit. Cinderfur later joined the elders' den. After Brokenstar and his followers were exiled, Nightstar named Cinderfur his deputy. Cinderfur was the first cat to fall ill to the sickness from the Carrionplace, and Nightstar was too weak to name his replacement. He died from the sickness and went to StarClan. From StarClan, Cinderfur watched Tigerstar's leadership ceremony with worried eyes.
History[]
In The Prophecies Begin arc[]
Fire and Ice[]
- Cinderfur is the cat chosen to become ShadowClan's deputy when Nightpelt becomes Clan leader. This is unusual, since deputies were rarely chosen from cats as old as Cinderfur.
Forest of Secrets[]
- Cinderfur: "I think they're here to spy."
- Tigerclaw: "Spy? What can we spy on here? We're nowhere near your camp."
- Forest of Secrets, page 184
Rising Storm[]
- «The two ShadowClan cats looked away. Did that mean Cinderfur had already died, or that he was just too old to become leader?»
- —Fireheart's thoughts, while talking with Littlecloud and Whitethroat Rising Storm, page 131
A Dangerous Path[]
- Tigerstar, ShadowClan's new leader, explains Nightstar had been too weak to appoint a new cat in Cinderfur's place and died without a deputy, leaving ShadowClan without a leader up until Tigerstar's arrival.
In the Super Editions[]
Yellowfang's Secret[]
- Cinderkit and Stumpykit are born to Clawface and Rowanberry. They look out at the camp curiously beside their mother. Cinderkit soon becomes Cinderpaw, with Nutwhisker as his mentor, and occasionally eating at the fresh-kill pile.
- He later earns his warrior name of Cinderfur. The night Raggedstar dies, Cinderfur discusses what to do about WindClan with Scorchwind, Tangleburr, and Blackfoot, declaring that they will think they're weak without a leader. Cinderfur agrees with Brokenstar about the elders moving out of the camp, saying that with the amount of kits that are around they will forever bother the elders, so it would be best if they would go. As ShadowClan are debating whether or not Yellowfang really killed Marigoldkit and Mintkit, he sniffs and says that she's been acting like the entire Clan is a nuisance.
Leopardstar's Honor[]
- Leopardfur notices that Cinderfur is sitting in Blackfoot's place as the former ShadowClan deputy had ran with Tigerstar.
In the Novellas[]
Tigerclaw's Fury[]
- Clawface: "Where's Cinderfur? I heard he'd been made deputy."
- Rowanberry: "He died, Clawface. He was the one who brought the sickness into the camp, when he caught an infected rat."
- Tigerclaw's Fury, chapter 4
Blackfoot's Reckoning[]
- Cinderfur and Stumpytail attack Barkface when ShadowClan raids WindClan's camp to drive them away. When Blackfoot and the others return to ShadowClan, he notices Cinderfur's absence, and Wolfstep confirms he died and Nightstar has been too ill to name his replacement.
In the Stand-Alone Graphic Novels[]
Exile from ShadowClan[]
- "We're good warriors, we can't just...fight against our leader. Maybe he'll listen to reason?"
- ―Cinderfur to Nightpelt Exile from ShadowClan, page 143
- When Clawface steals four ThunderClan kits to make into ShadowClan apprentices, Nightpelt, Ashfur, Dawncloud, and Yellowfang team up with a ThunderClan patrol to overthrow Brokenstar, and Nightpelt hopes Cinderfur will join them. When the battle ensues, Cinderfur participates in the fight and he snarls at Brokenstar's betrayal when the Clan leader reveals he killed Raggedstar and Brightflower's kits. When ShadowClan begins to rebuild under Nightpelt's guidance, Cinderfur and Runningnose consult with the Clan and agree that Nightpelt should lead them. Nightpelt eventually agrees and he promises to name Cinderfur his deputy once he receives his nine lives.
In the Field Guides[]
The Ultimate Guide[]
- It is said on Tigerstar's page that Tigerstar had succeeded Nightstar instead of Cinderfur, who is referred to as elderly. At the end of Tigerstar's leader ceremony, Cinderfur is shown along Tallpoppy, Darkflower, and Dawncloud standing close together, and they watch with hopeful, anxious eyes.
