"A dreamer like you needs a practical cat beside them. And, if any cat does join, we can't have a beginner teaching them how to swim."
— Night teasing River Ripple about officially forming their own group in Riverstar's Home, page 198

Nightstar is a muscular, sleek[9] black-and-white she-cat[2] with yellow eyes.[10]

Nightstar was the second leader of RiverClan in the forest territories. Originally a loner, Night and her brother Mist lived near an island by the river. At one point, Night had a mate and a litter of kits, but their deaths caused her to distance herself from creating bonds with others. She befriended River Ripple when he washed downstream, and she and Mist taught him how to hunt fish and swim. Night was hesitant when River Ripple decided to form his own group like the mountain cats, but her friendship with River Ripple convinced her to stay. She eventually became RiverClan's first deputy, and she watched over the Clan when Riverstar and Drizzle journeyed to the Cats of the Park. Following Riverstar's death, Night succeeded him as Nightstar. She ascended to StarClan after her death.

History[]

In the Dawn of the Clans arc[]

Thunder Rising[]

"Maybe we can give you some tips. And maybe you can show us what a water rat can do."
―Night to Ripple about their hunt Thunder Rising, page 24 (Bonus Scene)
When Ripples washes from the river, Night inquires if Ripple was a water rat while she observes him. Ripple introduces himself, asking if he could stay around, and Night explains that the land was for cats who lived alone. She adds that he was welcome to stay, as long as he didn't steal prey from other cats. However, she offers for him to join her hunt, and he would be introduced to her brother, so all three could hunt together. Ripple accepts, and Night then introduces herself. Later, Thunder spots River Ripple and Night hunting in the forest. Since the silver tom helped them during the fire, Thunder's prepared to leave them when a black tom attacks him.

The Blazing Star[]

While staying at River Ripple's camp, Gray Wing watches Night and River Ripple scooping out fish onto the bank. Deciding that it is time for him to go home, Gray Wing suggests that River Ripple, Night, and Dew could come back with him, although River Ripple declines based on the fact that they are supposed to be isolating themselves from the deadly sickness. At the battle against the rogue One Eye, Night, River Ripple, and Dew charge across the moor from the direction of the river. Post battle, Night is one of the cats who appear to be least injured, and so helps Gray Wing dig One Eye's grave.

A Forest Divided[]

When Thunder and River Ripple bring Quiet Rain and Sun Shadow to Tall Shadow's camp after they travel from the mountains, Tall Shadow asks River Ripple if he accepted Dappled Pelt and Shattered Ice into his group, and the silver tom says he did, mentioning that Night and Dew have been teaching Dappled Pelt to swim.

Path of Stars[]

When Lightning Tail complains to Violet and Thunder about Ember's uncooperativeness, Thunder changes the subject, and wonders how River Ripple is doing with his rogues. He is worried about the river cats, and thinks how they are a small group, consisting of only River Ripple, Night, Dappled Pelt, and Shattered Ice. During the gathering to make the rogues a part of the groups, Thunder spots Night, Shattered Ice, and Dappled Pelt.

Riverstar's Home[]

"Not like that, you flea-brain! I mean because I believe in you! You're the best friend I've ever had, and I trust you with my life. If you lead a Clan, I want to be part of it. But if you're gone, then..."
―Night to Riverstar about joining the Clan Riverstar's Home, page 325
Night meets Ripple shortly after he arrives while struggling to fish. She gently teases his inexperience before introducing herself. Ripple introduces himself as River Ripple, and Night offers to teach him how to fish. Night fetches her brother, Mist, and the sibling pair instruct him how to catch fish. The three cats share their prey, and River Ripple explains how he came from a park. When he asks if Night or Mist have mates, Night briskly explains she used to have a mate and kits. However, she offers for River Ripple to stay in the area. Night and Mist live on the other side of the river in open dens, but they visit River Ripple in his nets occasionally to share prey or exchange herbs. Night and Mist go on a wander while Hawk and his rogues bully River Ripple, and the black-and-white she-cat apologizes that she wasn't there to help. However, she warns River Ripple against taking food from the Twolegs.
Night warmly greets River Ripple when he escapes from his Twolegs after moons of being a kittypet, and River Ripple is thrilled that she's excited to see him. While they share prey, River Ripple asks if she's every lonely, and she explains that she has her brother Mist and is hesitant about getting closer to other cats since her family died. Night later confronts River Ripple for speaking with Turtle Tail, Gray Wing, Rainswept Flower, Gorse, and Wind, insisting they should keep to themselves. Night later goes for a wander in newleaf to mourn the anniversary of her kits' deaths. When she comes back, River Ripple asks Night about forming a group like the mountain cats. Night is hesitant since she prefers being a loner, but River Ripple agrees not to set borders or order cats around. The black-and-white she-cat agrees to give it a try.
She teaches River Ripple how to swim, and River Ripple teaches her how to meditate like the Cats of the Park did. While catching a rabbit, the pair run into Whistle, a ragged and starving loner. River Ripple asks him to join their group, much to Night's ire. Their small group grows over the next moon, with Sage, Silver, Croak, Woodlouse, and Hollow joining. Night is pleased with their small group, though is still untrusting of newcomers. Night confronts River Ripple when he brings Cleo and her kits, Hunter and Scout, into their camp since they are former kittypets, but the silver tom vouches for them. While teaching Cleo how to swim, Casper viciously attacks Night. Croak cleans up her wound, but it soon becomes infected. River Ripple fetches Dappled Pelt, one of the mountain cat healers, who successfully treats Night's wounds. However, Night challenges River Ripple for offering Dappled Pelt to join their group, since allowing Cleo to join led to Casper's wrongful attack.
After the fire in Clear Sky's forest, Night, River Ripple, and Hollow search for prey in the burnt forest. However, Nettle and Quick Water confront them for trespassing. Night is doubtful about a potential war with the mountain cats. Later, Night and River Ripple follow Hollow when he returns to the forest to reclaim their lost prey, but they are confronted by Thunder and Clear Sky. The night of the Great Battle, River Ripple tells Night that the spirit cats want him to become a leader of his own group. He's worried she'll leave him, but Night eventually agrees to help him lead. When Dew asks to join their new group, Night agrees to let her join but follows her around after the gray she-cat offers to hunt. Night participates in the battle against One Eye, and she warmly welcomes Shattered Ice and Dappled Pelt when they ask to join their group on the island. Later, Night and River Ripple discuss potential trainers for Drizzle, Pine, Trout Fur, Willow Stream, and Snow Tail. Night accompanies River Ripple and Dappled Pelt to the Moonstone for his nine lives, but waits outside the Mothermouth. After his ceremony, Gray Wing tells Riverstar to take Night as his deputy.
When Riverstar's former mentor Arc abruptly arrives with a request for help, Night confronts Riverstar when he will come back. Riverstar asks for her to become leader if he fails to return in two moons, but Night worries she'll return to being a loner if he doesn't come back. Riverstar wonders if she has feelings for him, and he begins to apologize when Night sharply reprimands that he's her best friend. Riverstar promises that he will return. During his absence, Night establishes new dens for the apprentices, warriors, and for Riverstar. After Riverstar, Drizzle, Arc, and the other Cats of the Park defeat Slash and his rogues, Drizzle presses Riverstar for them to go home before Night earns her nine lives. He, Drizzle, and his new mate Finch arrive the day of Night's expected ceremony. Night's furious that he took so long, and she explains how there's been trouble with Skystar and SkyClan. Night, Riverstar, and Drizzle later search for Moss Tail, Dawn Mist, and Pine Needle in the Twolegplace. After Riverstar and Finch's kits are born, Night insists she'll be the first to welcome them to RiverClan.
Night participates in the skirmish against SkyClan, and she fights against Thorn, shoving him in the river. She later grapples with Nettle. After SkyClan retreats, RiverClan shoves the tree-bridge into the river to prevent them from returning. Night stands proudly with Riverstar, and the Clan leader is glad to have her as his friend.

Moth Flight's Vision[]

Night: "I hope you can hunt for yourself. I'm not feeding WindClan or SkyClan cats."
River Ripple: "It doesn't matter what Clan they're from; their hunger is no different from yours."
Dawn Mist: "Don't worry about her. She enjoys being bad-tempered."
Drizzle: "Yesterday she said that I was as dumb as a water vole."
—River Ripple, Dawn Mist, and Drizzle about Night Moth Flight's Vision, chapter 18
When Moth Flight takes Micah go to RiverClan to learn about herbs from Dappled Pelt, they spot Night downstream from them padding onto the shore. As get closer to the camp, Night blocks their path, eyeing the medicine cats suspiciously. She asks them what they are doing there, but Micah greets her cheerfully and explains that Dappled Pelt invited them to come and learn what she knows about healing. Night narrows her eyes, noting that she still thinks it is a bad idea to let other Clan cats into their camp, but Dawn Mist argues that they are only medicine cats. Begrudgingly, Night escorts them to their camp. Once they arrive, Night flashes Moth Flight a look and growls that she hopes that she can hunt for herself, as she isn't going to feed WindClan or SkyClan cats. River Ripple tells his Clanmate that it doesn't matter what Clan they are from, as their hunger is no different, but Night is not convinced. Dawn Mist whispers to Moth Flight not to mind Night, as she enjoys being bad-tempered, and Drizzle adds that Night had said that she was as dumb as a water vole. As Dappled Pelt explains herbs to Moth Flight and Micah, they are interrupted as Night exclaims Drizzle fell into the river and is not breathing. That night, as Micah and Moth Flight rest in their nest, Moth Flight eyes Night, who is watching them warily from the other side of the clearing.

Quotes[]

Ripple: "Greetings. I've come from the Cats of the Park. Will you and your Cats allow me to stay here?"
Night: "I'm not part of any group of cats. This land belongs to wild cats who hunt alone. You're welcome to stay here, as long as you don't steal the prey out from any cat's paws."
Ripple: "Hunt? The cats here hunt...alone?"
Night: "Even though we hunt for ourselves, that doesn't mean that we can't hunt with a friend. Would you like to join me today? I'll introduce you to my brother, and we can all hunt together."
—Ripple encountering Night Thunder Rising, pages 23-24 (Bonus Scene)

"No cat should watch another cat starve."
―Night to River Ripple after he catches a fish Riverstar's Home, page 27

"I lost them. I lost them all. I'm never risking that hurt again. I'm fine with Mist and occasional friends. Like you. But not a mate. Not again."
―Night to River Ripple about her family Riverstar's Home, page 72

Night: "You wanted a group. And you've built one."
River Ripple: "Yes. Without being mean or greedy like the mountain cats. Are you okay having so many cats around?"
Night: "It's not bad. As long as they don't crowd me."
River Ripple: "I'm glad you're happy too. For the first time since I left the park, I feel like I belong somewhere."

Night: "Sure, Dappled Pelt is friendly and kind. Cleo was friendly and kind, but Casper wasn't. He nearly killed me."
River Ripple: "He didn't mean to."
Night: "Perhaps not. But all the same, he brought trouble. More cats mean more trouble. I wish you could see that."
River Ripple: "But—"
Night: "This isn't the park, River Ripple. We can't simply trust every cat we meet. Out here, cats can be dangerous as Twolegs."
River Ripple: "Twolegs aren't always dangerous. And neither are cats."
Night: "Believing that will get you into trouble. The group ought to stay as it is. We should keep to ourselves. It's the only way we can be sure no one else gets hurt."
—River Ripple and Night arguing about their group Riverstar's Home, page 128

"Yet? I don't ever want to fight them. I only live here because there's good hunting and it's peaceful. It if becomes dangerous, I'll move on. There's always prey farther down the river."
―Night to River Ripple about Clear Sky's cats Riverstar's Home, page 153

"Take Night as your deputy. She will give you strength when you have none of your own. She is a good and honorable cat, who will be leader herself one day."
―Gray Wing to Riverstar about Night Riverstar's Home, page 298

Night: "I still think it's a bad idea to let other Clan cats into our camp."
Dawn Mist: "River Ripple says it's okay. And they're only medicine cats. What's the worst they can do? Cure you?"
—Dawn Mist and Night about Moth Flight and Micah Moth Flight's Vision, chapter 18

Riverstar: "[Arc] raised me. He taught me everything I knew before I came to the river."
Night: "Nothing useful, then."
Riverstar: "He taught me how to meditate and to be kind and to share with other cats and—. He caught me to be myself."
Night: "Then he did very well."
—Riverstar and Night about Arc Riverstar's Home, page 304

Night: "But what if something happens to you? You're going to help them deal with Slash. And the journey will be dangerous. You were scared of making it before. How is it any safer now?"
Riverstar: "Arc will be with me."
Night: "That doesn't mean you'll be safe."
Riverstar: "I have nine lives, remember?"
Night: "What if that's not enough?"
Riverstar: "Then you will take my place."
Night: "Me? You want me to be leader?"
Riverstar: "I can't think of a better one."
Night: "But I'm a loner!"
Riverstar: "You were a loner. But you joined my group."
Night: "Not to become leader! I joined because of you—"
Riverstar: "I'm so sorry. I never realized—"
Night: "Not like that, you flea-brain! I mean because I believe in you! You're the best friend I've ever had, and I trust you with my life. If you lead a Clan, I want to be part of it. But if you're gone, then..."
—Riverstar and Night about his journey Riverstar's Home, page 324-325

«Night had been by his side since the river had carried him here. She'd watched him grow, and she had changed herself to help him realize his dream of a Clan on the island. If the river had birthed RiverClan, then Night had helped him raise it as carefully and watchfully as a queen tended to her kits. He could never has asked for a better support. She was his dearest friend, a cat he would trust with his life.»
