"Twigpaw has not made this decision lightly. I've seen her struggling to do the right thing. Her heart has been torn in two directions since she came. I'm proud she has found the courage to decide. […] She's found where her true loyalty lies. That is not a waste of anyone's time. If she'd stayed here, with half her heart in ThunderClan, what use would she have been?"
— Sandynose defending Twigpaw from Leafstar in Darkest Night, page 288

Sandynose is a stocky, light brown[9] tabby[13] tom with ginger legs,[9] and amber eyes.[14]

Sandynose was a SkyClan warrior under Leafstar's leadership in the gorge and lake territories. He was born to Clovertail and Patchfoot alongside his sisters, Birdwing and Honeytail. He became an apprentice as Sandypaw, and after becoming a warrior, Sandynose mentored Pebbleshine following Billystorm's death. He became mates with Plumwillow, and she was expecting his kits; however, when Darktail drove SkyClan from the gorge, Sandynose disappeared. Hawkwing raised his kits, Dewkit, Reedkit, and Finkit, as their adoptive father, until Sandynose reunited with his kin upon his return. After arriving at the lake, Sandynose mentored Twigpaw, but supported her decision to go back to ThunderClan, and afterwards, he mentored Quailfeather. During a battle instigated by the impostor, Sandynose was killed and became a ghost, unable to find StarClan. Ashfur took possession of his spirit and the others and kept him prisoner in the Dark Forest. Sandynose was forced to fight for Ashfur, but after the dark warrior's death, Sandynose ascended to StarClan.

A Vision of Shadows[]

"When I tell you to catch a bird, I mean catch a bird. If I want you to catch a mouse, I'll say mouse. You're a SkyClan cat now. Any cat can catch prey on the forest floor. Only SkyClan can hunt in the trees."
―Sandynose to Twigpaw about being a SkyClan cat Darkest Night, page 35
Sandynose is a warrior in SkyClan, who has recently arrived to the lake. Despite Twigpaw passing her warrior assessment in ThunderClan, Sandynose becomes her mentor upon her decision to join SkyClan, determined to train his apprentice from the ground up as a SkyClan warrior. When his son, Finpaw, is trapped under a fallen branch, Sandynose gives Puddleshine, the ShadowClan medicine cat, consent to severe his tail after attempts to move the branch fail.
As Finpaw recovers, Sandynose disapproves of his close relationship with Twigpaw, due to his suspicions that Twigpaw was still loyal to ThunderClan. He confronts Twigpaw about their friendship, arguing that she was distracting him from his training. When Twigpaw chooses to return to ThunderClan at her warrior ceremony, Sandynose defends her choice to Leafstar, explaining that she would be no use as a SkyClan warrior with half her heart in ThunderClan. However, Finpaw leaves SkyClan to follow Twigpaw to ThunderClan, stating his family can manage without him. Sandynose later receives his third apprentice, Quailpaw.

The Broken Code[]

"It'll take more than a vigil to forget that Sandynose was killed by warriors for the sake of a traitor."
―Sagenose to his Clanmates about Sandynose Darkness Within, page 41
Sandynose's apprentice, Quailpaw, is now a warrior named Quailfeather. Sandynose, along with his mate, Plumwillow, and other Clan warriors, agree with Bramblestar's impostor about punishing codebreakers. He doubts the existence of Bramblestar's ghost when it was summoned by Rootpaw and Tree. He assisted the rebels and ShadowClan during a battle against the other Clans instigated by the impostor; however, Sandynose is one of the few cats killed. Rootspring sees his ghost during a Gathering, where he and the other fallen warriors are unable to find StarClan. Afterwards, he is heavily mourned by his Clanmates after the battle amongst the Clans during the Clans' vigil. He is also said to be seen lost alongside the other ghosts, as noted by Cheddar to Tree and Rootspring. Sandynose's spirit becomes possessed by Ashfur and is trapped in the Dark Forest. Sandynose is forced to fight his former Clanmates, but after Ashfur's defeat, Sandynose joined StarClan.

"Thank you, Hawkwing. I can never repay you for keeping my family safe."
―Sandynose to Hawkwing Hawkwing's Journey, page 405
In Hawkwing's Journey, Sandynose continues Pebblepaw's training after Billystorm is killed by a badger on one of Darktail's failed missions to find the Clans. He chastises Hawkwing for being suspicious of Darktail, accusing him of being prejudiced against cats who were not Clan-born. When Darktail and his Kin of rogues attack the gorge, he and Hawkwing work together to fight one off, but disappears in the retreat. Several cats are killed in the battle, including his father, Patchfoot, and the Clan assumes Sandynose to be dead following his disappearance. Plumwillow bears his kits in his absence, naming them Dewkit, Reedkit, and Finkit, and Hawkwing acts as their father. Sandynose and Fallowfern eventually reunite with SkyClan on their journey to the Clans' territory. He thanks Hawkwing for keeping his family safe, and reunites with his mate and kits. When the kits prefers Hawkwing as their father, which causes Sandynose to be hurt, Hawkwing reassures Reedkit, Dewkit, and Finkit that Sandynose will be a good father, stating they just need to give him a chance. After his kits become apprentices, he bonds with them more, being a happy family with them and Plumwillow.
"[Rabbitleap and I] came to return [the rabbit]."
―Sandynose to a ShadowClan patrol Tigerheart's Shadow, page 18
In Tigerheart's Shadow, a ShadowClan hunting patrol chases a rabbit over the newly established border, which Sandynose catches and decides to return it to the ShadowClan cats. Though the ShadowClan warriors are hesitant, they accept the rabbit, later returning the favor by giving SkyClan a rabbit in return, which caused arguments among the two Clans.

SkyClan and the Stranger[]

"Yeah—we were hoping it would count [my sisters and my], ah, final assessment before becoming warriors...?"
―Sandypaw lying to Sharpclaw about where he, his sisters, and Nettlesplash were going The Rescue, page 36
Sandypaw is an apprentice, along with his sisters, Honeypaw and Birdpaw. When he and Nettlesplash break the warrior code by eating on patrol, Leafstar punishes them by making them search Lichenfur for ticks. Later, he sneaks out of camp to eat kittypet food with Nettlesplash and Birdpaw, but begins to feel guilty. He is mocked by Birdpaw when he wishes to come clean, but appears smug when she and the others are reprimanded by Leafstar.

Personality and traits[]

"[Sandynose's] obsessed with making every cat act like they are still in the gorge. He told me yesterday he was going to find a cliff so I could practice rock-climbing like a gorge cat. Doesn't he realize we're lake cats now? It would be better to learn how to swim."
―Finpaw to Twigpaw about Sandynose's strictness Darkest Night, page 139
Sandynose is reckless as an apprentice, often eating prey on patrol and taking food from Twolegs.[15] He would also lie to the Clan deputy, Sharpclaw, on where he and his fellow Clanmates were going.[16] Despite this, he is shown to be honest, not wanting to keep secrets from the Clan.[17] Once a warrior, Sandynose isn't afraid to speak his mind to his Clanmates, such as when he spoke out as Hawkwing became suspicious of Darktail's presence among the Clan,[18] and when he spoke his mind aloud about Tigerstar and Dovewing due to their actions for breaking the code.[19] Nonetheless, he deeply cares for his family, and when Sandynose returned after disappearing, he shows great gratitude towards Hawkwing for keeping his family safe.[20] He was a strict mentor to Twigpaw, knowing that her heart still lied with ThunderClan, but spoke out against Leafstar to defend Twigpaw's decision to leave SkyClan.[21] Out of his litter, Sandynose is strict with Finpaw the most due to him thinking his son's training could be neglected.[22]

Relationships[]

Plumwillow, Dewspring, and Reedclaw[]

"Your father and mother make each other very happy. And they want you to be part of that happiness. You can't do that if you won't give Sandynose a chance. He'll be a really good father. I know he will."
―Hawkwing to Reedkit, Dewkit, and Finkit about their parents Hawkwing's Journey, page 410
Sandynose loved Plumwillow, and she was expecting his kits when Darktail's rogues attacked the gorge. He fussed over her safety, making sure she was okay.[23] When Sandynose disappeared after the attack, Plumwillow mourned her mate's absence. She thought she would have to raise Reedkit, Dewkit, and Finkit alone, but Hawkwing was there to help her.[24] When Sandynose returned, he reunited with Plumwillow, who had missed him, and met his kits, loving them at first sight, though he appreciated Hawkwing for keeping his family safe. Sandynose tried to bond with his kits, but they preferred Hawkwing over him, which had hurt Sandynose. However, Hawkwing reassured Reedkit, Dewkit, and Finkit that Sandynose would be a great father to them, and stated that Plumwillow and Sandynose make each other very happy, wanting them to be part of their parents' happiness. With much consideration, the kits gave Sandynose a chance.[20] Once his kits were apprenticed, it was noted that they have been bonding with Sandynose, acknowledging him more as their father.[25]
After Sandynose was killed during a battle instigated by the false Bramblestar, Plumwillow, Reedclaw, and Dewspring mourned him heavily.[26]

Finleap[]

"I'm never going to be the warrior Sandynose hoped I would be. He knows it and I know it. It's probably why he doesn't want me hanging out with you. He probably thinks I'll hold you back."
―Finpaw to Twigpaw about Sandynose Darkest Night, page 252
Sandynose loved all of his kits, but when Finpaw became an apprentice and had to get part of his tail amputated,[27] Sandynose seemed to be more stricter on him and his training, due to his growing bond with Twigpaw, a former ThunderClan apprentice.[22] Finpaw decided to leave SkyClan to follow Twigpaw to ThunderClan, saying that his kin can manage without him.[28]

Twigbranch[]

Sandynose: "You can't live with a paw in two camps."
Twigpaw: "Are you accusing me of being disloyal?"
Sandynose: "No. You will make a great warrior one day. But first you need to decide which Clan you want to fight for."
—Sandynose to Twigpaw about her loyalty Darkest Night, page 257
Twigbranch, then Twigpaw, joined SkyClan to be with her kin, and Sandynose was chosen to be her mentor. From the very beginning, he was strict with her, teaching her the ways of how to be a SkyClan cat,[29] and disapproved of her growing bond with his son, Finpaw. Though Sandynose doubted her ability in SkyClan, he knew that Twigpaw's heart was always with ThunderClan, but he was proud of her, praising her along the way.[30] During Twigpaw's warrior ceremony, he defended Twigpaw when she decided to defect back to ThunderClan.[21]

Hawkwing[]

"Thank you, Hawkwing. I can never repay you for keeping my family safe."
―Sandynose to Hawkwing Hawkwing's Journey, page 405
Though not much interaction was between the two, Sandynose chastised Hawkwing for his suspicions of Darktail's presence and his unsuccessful mission attempts to find the Clans. When Hawkwing tried to speak out harshly again, Sandynose tried to reason with the dark gray tom.[31] Despite this, when Darktail's rogues attacked SkyClan, Hawkwing made sure Sandynose's mate, Plumwillow, was safe after being hurt, which relieved Sandynose.[23] In the aftermath of the attack, Sandynose's disappearance was known to the Clan alongside many others,[32] and Hawkwing felt guilty for Plumwillow, who was all alone without Sandynose.[33] During Plumwillow's kitting, Hawkwing kept reassuring Plumwillow when the kits come, stating that she'll see the best of both herself and Sandynose in their kits. Hawkwing later adopted the kits as his own, raising them to help Plumwillow.[24] Once Sandynose returned, he felt appreciation for Hawkwing for keeping his family safe, showing great gratitude towards Hawkwing. Though he felt hurt when his kits preferred Hawkwing, the deputy reassured the kits that Sandynose would be a great father,[20] which made Sandynose bond with Reedkit, Dewkit, and Finkit more.[25] After Sandynose was killed, Hawkwing mourned him alongside Sandynose's kits and mate.[26]

Clovertail and Patchfoot[]

"Now kits, don't you get up on top of that rock and fall off!"
―Clovertail to her kits The Rescue, page 4
Sandynose, as an apprentice, took food from Twolegs behind his family's and Clan's back. Despite this, Sandypaw did not want to keep the secret from his mother or the Clan any longer, feeling guilty about it, especially keeping it from his mother.[17] Clovertail fussed over her kits when they were wanting to jump on the rocks in camp.[34] After a battle with rogues, Sandypaw was with his sisters, mother, and father, growing closer as SkyClan won the battle.[35] Though his reaction wasn't shown, but Sandynose's father, Patchfoot, was killed when Darktail's rogues attacked the gorge,[23] and without him knowing since his disappearance, his mother, Clovertail, was kidnapped by Twolegs.[36]

Birdwing and Honeytail[]

Birdpaw: "I can do it! I can do it!"
Sandypaw: "Not before I do it!"
Honeypaw: "Watch me! Watch me!"
—Birdpaw, Sandypaw, and Honeypaw competing with each other The Rescue, page 4
As apprentices, Sandynose and his siblings were competitive with each other, often trying to be better than the other.[34] Though Birdpaw got hurt from slipping off the rocks, Sandypaw and Honeypaw were interested about her injured eye, but Birdpaw teased them when her eye was covered in herbs.[37] Though not much was shown from him, but his sister, Honeytail, was killed by raccoons,[38] and his other sister, Birdwing, was kidnapped by Twolegs, though he had already disappeared before this happened without him knowing.[36]

Family[]

Sandynose's parents are Patchfoot and Clovertail, and his sisters are Birdwing and Honeytail. His half-siblings via Clovertail are Rockshade, Bouncefire, and Tinycloud. His mate is Plumwillow, and Reedclaw, Finleap and Dewspring are their children. For more of Sandynose's family, click here!
