"But even Spotted Fur's skill and enthusiasm couldn't make prey appear where there was none."
— Narrator about Spotted Fur in Path of Stars, page 29

Spotted Fur is a golden-brown tom with amber eyes and a dappled coat.[2]

History[]

In the Dawn of the Clans arc[]

Path of Stars[]

«Spotted Fur was a new member of the group—a golden brown tom whose mother had hunted with Slate in her rogue days. Spotted Fur had left his mother and littermates when they'd moved on to new territory. He'd watched the moorland cats hunting and racing through the heather and wanted to join them. Wind Runner hadn't been keen to accept a rogue as a campmate, but Slate had vouched for him, swearing that his mother was a kindhearted cat and a good hunter. And Spotted Fur had quickly proven the gray she-cat right. He'd caught as much prey as Wind Runner, and the group leader had soon forgotten that she'd ever had doubts about the young tom.»
—Gray Wing on Spotted Fur's backstory Path of Stars, chapter 3
Spotted Fur is a new member of Wind Runner's camp. His mother hunted with Slate when she was a rogue, and had left him and his siblings when they left for new land. After seeing the rogue cats for some time, he wished to join them, but Wind Runner was doubtful. Slate advocated for him, mentioning how amiable and skilled his mother was, and he proved himself by catching as much prey as Wind Runner, who forgot her doubts.
While hunting, Spotted Fur comments that the prey-scents were stale, and Gray Wing acknowledges that despise his enthusiasm, he couldn't make the prey appear. As Slate heads for Wind Runner, Spotted Fur watches hopefully across. When a rabbit heads for Moth Flight, Spotted Fur turns to watch. After Moth Flight's blunder with catching the rabbit, Spotted Fur comments about the stale prey-scent. Gray Wing suggests for him to look in the high burrows, so he can show Moth Flight how to notice rabbit trails. He asks for affirmation, and Slate adds that she would appreciate his company. Spotted Fur dashes away from the two to catch up to Moth Flight.
When reports of more of the rogues' misdeeds come in, Minnow regrets not staying with Spotted Fur and Reed, as Wind Runner's kits are too young to fight. It is noted that Reed, Spotted Fur, and the kits were in Wind Runner's den, which would be easy to defend due to its structure. After discussing plans to deal with Slash, Slate suggests that Spotted Fur would stand guard that night. The next morning, Gray Wing goes out hunting, thinking that it would please Spotted Fur to bring back more prey.
Spotted Fur, along with some of the other moor cats, partake in a skirmish involving Slash's cats, crashing into the attacking rogues. While Slate kits, Spotted Fur paws through the prey pile and dines on a stale shrew while Bee watches him. After Fern gets injured, Spotted Fur heads for the camp entrance, and Gray Wing bursts into camp after him. Spotted Fur circles Wind Runner, wondering where Fern is, and follows after Moth Flight when taking her suggestion. Once they find her, Spotted Fur hangs back, wide-eyed. Wind Runner then tells Gorse Fur to take Spotted Fur to look for invaders.
While Fern is tended to, Gorse Fur orders Spotted Fur to look for Bee, and the latter remarks that Willow may know something about the situation. After Wind Runner confronts her, Gorse Fur suggests for Willow and Spotted Fur to pose as camp guards, and the two of them, along with Gorse Fur and Willow, carry Fern back to camp. As the cats are being fully accepted into the groups, Gray Wing nestles between Spotted Fur and Minnow. When Slash arrives at the Gathering, Gray Wing reminds himself that Spotted Fur was with Slate, but knew that he couldn't fight them off all by himself. When they return, Slate and Spotted Fur lie in the snow, bloodied by their wounds. Spotted Fur then groans, and mutters that he tried to save them, but collapses under his weight.
When Thunder reports the news about Gray Wing's situation to Clear Sky, he notes that Slate and Spotted Fur were wounded during their fight, but Pebble Heart was tending to them. As he is dying, Gray Wing thinks of the closeness he feels for his campmates, including Spotted Fur.

Moth Flight's Vision[]

«He still loves me.»
—Moth Flight thinking about Spotted Fur Moth Flight's Vision, page 386
When Moth Flight loses Slate's kits, Spotted Fur helps Moth Flight find and bring them back to the hollow.
Moth Flight runs away from WindClan and Spotted Fur finds her, trying to convince her to return. She is stubborn with her choice and he decides to stay with her for the night. They share a toad Moth Flight caught and build a nest and sleep together. In the morning, he is not conscious enough to understand Moth Flight is leaving. He drifts back to sleep.
At the Gathering, Spotted Fur is mentioned to have joked that if Moth Flight found the end of a rainbow, she'd tried to climb up it.
Spotted Fur and Dust Muzzle accompany Moth Flight on her search for catmint in Twolegplace. They end up getting attacked by a Twoleg, but manage to escape. On the way home, Moth Flight leaves them to hunt on the moor for a while while she takes the catmint to Rocky. When Wind Runner asks if she crossed Clear Sky's land and Micah says he wishes he could have escorted her, Moth Flight explains that Spotted Fur and Dust Muzzle came with her.
Moth Flight is eating a mouse on the day she and Micah are planning to go to RiverClan to learn from Dappled Pelt. Spotted Fur confronts her, and asks why she's going with Micah and not Pebble Heart or Cloud Spots. This leads to Fern Leaf, Holly, Slate, Jagged Peak, and Willow Tail questioning her, but Wind Runner stands up for her.
When Moth Flight and Micah are staying in ThunderClan, Spotted Fur comes and tells Moth Flight that Rocky is sick again, and that they need Moth Flight. He seems hostile with Micah, raising his hackles, but allows Moth Flight to bring him along.
Once Moth Flight comes home from grieving in ShadowClan due to Micah's death, Spotted Fur, Fern Leaf and Dust Muzzle all greet her and are happy about her expecting kits. Moth Flight briefly worries Spotted Fur might be jealous, but the tom congratulates her anyway.
When Moth Flight is going to Fourtrees, she thinks of her kits, and remembers that multiple cats promised to look after them while she went to the Gathering, including Spotted Fur.
Spotted Fur is mentioned to be sharing prey with Reed Tail while Moth Flight searches for someone to look after her kits. She hopefully looks at them, but they are relaxing after going on the dawn patrol. Later, when Blue Whisker hurts herself after falling from tall rock, Wind Runner, Reed Tail and Spotted Fur come to check she's okay. Spotted Fur starts playing moss ball with them, and Moth Flight silently thanks the tom.
Moth Flight and Spotted Fur go onto SkyClan territory to get bark for Slate, who has redcough. However, Nettle, Birch and Alder catch them, and take them to Clear Sky. Moth Flight and Spotted Fur try to reason with him, but as Wind Runner blocked Moth Flight from helping Tiny Branch after he got hurt by a fox, and the fact Willow Tail has been saying Red Claw is stealing prey, he takes them captive.
While they are being held captive, they try to think of a way to escape. Moth Flight is concerned about Slate, and suggests trying to burrow through the back of the den they are being kept in. Spotted Fur is skeptical of this idea, saying they'd only be able to do that if they had paws made of wood. The two cats then talk about Willow Tail and the trouble about the rabbits. Spotted Fur suggests grimly that Willow Tail may want a battle. Moth Flight demands why a cat would wants suffering, but Spotted Fur doesn't answer and instead says that SkyClan cats have to eat eventually, as Alder is guarding the den. Moth Flight says another cat will just take her place. They then wonder where Willow Tail is, and Spotted Fur says she's probably already on her way back to camp. Moth Flight gets worried about this, as she fears it may start a war between the Clans. As they are discussing ways of escaping, Acorn Fur comes with wet moss for them.
Moth Flight asks if she can help them escape, but Acorn Fur says she can't, as she is the medicine cat and doesn't want to betray her Clanmates. Spotted Fur agrees with this, but Moth Flight then suggests Acorn Fur brings the other medicine cats to the SkyClan camp to reason with Clear Sky. Spotted Fur shrugs and say it's worth trying, and Acorn Fur leaves. Spotted Fur then tells Moth Flight he's sorry, and when the white she-cat acts confused, he says sorry about Micah, and how jealous he was of him when she brought him back from Highstones, and confesses he always thought that the two would be mates. He then says he now understands how much Moth Flight loved Micah, but she says she must follow her heart. Spotted Fur says he must follows his, staring at her. Moth Flight realises that he still loves her, but before she can say anything, WindClan attacks the SkyClan camp. Spotted Fur runs out of the den first, Moth Flight hurrying after him.
When Moth Flight is about to take Wind Runner to the Moonstone, Dust Muzzle says he and Spotted Fur will come. The golden-brown tom looks up from his mouse with his eyes rounded questioningly. Dust Muzzle explains what they are doing, and Spotted Fur asks if Wind Runner can walk that far. He and Dust Muzzle help support Wind Runner as they trek onto the moor. However, this does little to help, as Wind Runner is still falling behind due to her pain. Eventually, they reach the Thunderpath and Moth Flight hurries down the slope. She wonders how Wind Runner will get across. When she glances back at them, her heart sinks as she realises Dust Muzzle and Spotted Fur were still at the slope. When Moth Flight says they have to get across the Thunderpath, Spotted Fur narrows his eyes and says that if they do the timing right that they can make it. He then adds that they'll have to stop in the middle, and says there is a narrow passage where monsters don't touch each other, pointing out that if they can't touch each other, they won't touch them.
Reluctantly, Moth Flight agrees as it is their only hope. As they cross, Spotted Fur, Dust Muzzle, and Wind Runner get hit by water, and Wind Runner stops for a quick break. They just barely get across, with Spotted Fur falling over in the process, but make it to Highstones. At the cave entrance, Moth Flight explains she must take Wind Runner in alone. Spotted Fur suggests that he and Dust Muzzle help her in then leave. Moth Flight hesitates, but then realises that while Spotted Fur and Dust Muzzle were hunters, she had a special connection with StarClan. She says no, and takes Wind Runner inside.
Later, after Windstar receives her leader name and nine lives, she says that Spotted Fur can train Black Ear. Windstar tells Spotted Fur to show him the borders and the best places to scent mark. The golden-brown tom puffs out his chest proudly.

—Moth Flight thinking about Spotted Fur Moth Flight's Vision, page 25

Spotted Fur: "Moth Flight."
Moth Flight: "What?"
Spotted Fur: "I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am."
Moth Flight: "Sorry?"
Spotted Fur: "About Micah. About him dying. I know I was jealous when you brought him back from Highstones with you. I always thought I'd be your mate. This probably isn't the best time. But it's so hard to get you alone these days. you're either with your kits or busy with your medicine-cat duties. I just wanted you to know that I understand how much you loved Micah. And I'm glad you got to spend time with him before he died. And the kits..."
Moth Flight: "Thank you. I'm sorry I hurt you, but I had to follow my heart."
Spotted Fur: "And I must follow mine."
Moth Flight: "You're a good friend, Spotted Fur. And the kits love you but—"
