Velvet is mentioned briefly by her former mate, Stick, when he says their daughter, Red, might be like her mother and not have much loyalty to their group.

One of Stick's friends, Shorty, later recommends that Stick should go talk to Velvet, because she might be able to change Red's mind before it's too late. Stick retorts that Velvet is dead to him, and Shorty says that she meant more to Stick than he lets on, adding that Stick thinks of Velvet every time he looks at Red. Shorty continues on to say that Stick should go to Velvet and ask for her help, as Velvet might be the only cat to save Red in time.

Later on, Stick visits Velvet in Twolegplace, hoping that he can convince her that Red needs their help. Velvet angrily tells Stick that they shared their daughter and nothing else when he begins to reminisce about how they first met. When Stick explains what's wrong with Red, Velvet asks if Red has fallen in love with a cat who lives by a different set of rules, and says sarcastically that he wouldn't dream of doing anything like that. When Stick tries to say that he thinks Red was involved with the Twoleg attack, Velvet protests, saying that Red would never do that. More gently, she reminds Stick that she had given him Red to raise, and basically, he is responsible for all her actions. She tries to convince him to talk to Red, but he says he had hoped that she would speak to Red herself. She points out that Red knows where she is, and if she wants to talk, she will. He angrily replies that Velvet can't hide with her housefolk while their daughter is in danger. Velvet tells Stick to let Red be, or she will end up hating him. She then vanishes into her Twoleg nest.

Once Stick leaves, he encounters Shorty, who asks what Velvet said. Stick responds by saying that Velvet thinks that he should leave Red to make up her mind herself. Shorty is surprised by the answer Stick gives him and goes into how it's much more than just Red. Stick, however, refuses to let Velvet think they're weak.
