In Goosefeather's Curse, Volestar is a RiverClan leader. Volestar is present at a Gathering, representing his Clan. He is sitting behind Doestar of ThunderClan as she announces that her Clan has three new litters of kits. Houndstar, the ShadowClan leader, leans over to him and whispers that ThunderClan's warriors would not like having to hunt for so many mouths, especially near the cold moons of leaf-bare.
