"Okay, maybe now I'm making a home for my family. But I'm doing something that's more than wandering around like a rogue cat, without a real home or friends. I've learned a lot from living with the others, and now I want to put that to use here. The hollow and the forest aren't the only places a group of cats could live."
— Wind Runner telling Gray Wing she's setting up her own group in The Blazing Star, page 153

Windstar, also known as Wind or Wind Runner, is a wiry[14] brown she-cat with narrow tabby stripes,[15] a thin, striped face,[16] and yellow eyes.[14]

Windstar was the founder and first leader of WindClan. Originally a rogue named Wind, she learned to become independent living on the moor and befriended Gorse after Branch left her to fend for herself, and the former later became her mate. Not long after Wind met Gray Wing, and she and Gorse joined Tall Shadow's group. Wind's devotion to lead did not go unnoticed, and she was welcomed to the group as Wind Runner. She later gave birth to Gorse Fur's kits, Emberkit, Morning Whisker, Moth Flight and Dust Muzzle. However, two of her kits died, and Wind Runner decided to form her own group on the moor, where she stayed to raise her two surviving kits, Dust Muzzle and Moth Flight. Her group was later renamed WindClan.

When tensions rose between WindClan and SkyClan when Willow Tail accused them of stealing prey, this resulted in a battle that severely wounded Wind Runner and blinded Willow Tail indefinitely. Moth Flight took her to the Moonstone in hopes of healing her injury, and there Wind Runner became the first leader to receive her nine lives, and earned the name Windstar. She was later succeeded by her mate, Gorsestar, after her final death. Windstar is remembered by her fierce determination and resilience to keep her Clan safe. In StarClan, Windstar granted Onestar and Harestar one of their nine lives. Her descendants continue to live in WindClan.

Dawn of the Clans[]

"Don't try and stop me. I want my kits to grow up somewhere safe, and the moor will never be safe as long as Clear Sky thinks he can tell any cat what to do!"
―Wind Runner convincing the others to let her join in the Great Battle The First Battle, page 255
As a young cat, Wind hunts with her companion and caretaker, Branch. She is resilient and determined, two traits that help her survive the challenging environment of the moor. After she becomes injured, Branch abandons her and Wind is left alone to fend for herself. Fueled by her strong desire to survive, Wind manages to build a successful life on the moor. She meets a young tom named Gorse, and, despite her initial wariness, she grows to enjoy his company.
Wind and Gorse live on the moor for many moons until they meet Gray Wing, a cat from the mountains, along with the other former Tribe cats. She teaches Gray Wing how to hunt rabbits and to tunnel underground. Gray Wing wants to invite them to their camp, but both Wind and Tall Shadow are hesitant. Wind prefers her freedom on the moor, but she and Gorse become regular visitors to the camp. Her leadership skills shine when a fire rages through the forest, and when she saves Jagged Peak from suffocating in a tunnel collapse. She is later renamed Wind Runner and officially becomes a member of the group.
While living in the hollow, Wind Runner gives birth to her and Gorse Fur's kits, Emberkit, Morning Whisker, Dust Muzzle, and Moth Flight. Shortly after, Emberkit dies and Wind Runner mourns heavily. She participates in the deadly fight between Clear Sky and the moor cats at Fourtrees. After the fight, she and the other leaders are visited by spirit cats of their fallen friends, including Emberkit, who warns the cats to unite or die. During a sickness that spreads throughout the groups, Morning Whisker falls ill and dies as well.
After Morning Whisker's death, she and Gorse Fur start their own camp on the moor, wanting to utilize everything she learned about living in a group and create safe haven for their family. There, she and her mate raise their two surviving kits. She welcomes several other cats such as Slate, Spotted Fur, and Gray Wing, but grows distrustful of Slash's former companions, including Bee. Her group is renamed WindClan by Gray Wing shortly before he dies.

«Suddenly Wind Runner moved. Moth Flight jerked her nose up, shock sparking through every hair. She stared as her mother pushed herself to her paws. Wind Runner lifted her chin and shook the comfrey from her hind leg. The once-bloody fur around her throat was clean and soft. Her injured paw pressed against the stone, as strong as the others.»
—Narrator as Wind Runner is revived Moth Flight's Vision, page 446
In Moth Flight's Vision, Wind Runner gets frustrated with Moth Flight's fumbling antics and banishes her when she accidentally strays on a Thunderpath. When Moth Flight comes back with news from StarClan about being the first medicine cat, Wind Runner is hesitant about this news, but trusts her ancestors. Tensions between WindClan and SkyClan rise, and Wind Runner sides with Willow Tail, her Clanmate, about SkyClan stealing prey. The conflict leads to a fight in SkyClan's camp and Wind Runner is critically injured. Following her intuition, Moth Flight carries her mother to the Moonstone where she receives her nine lives and the name Windstar.

Lives granted[]

The following is a list of gifts Windstar has granted during nine lives ceremonies:

Leader info[]

Relationships[]

Branch[]

Branch and Wind stuck together as loners, hunting and fighting for each other. After Wind was injured, Branch ran away, and Wind was left alone.[27] While receiving her nine lives, Wind Runner expressed anger at Branch for leaving her, but also gratitude because she wouldn't have found Gorse Fur, and received a life for trust.[28]

Gorse Fur[]

Gorse Fur and Wind Runner, then Gorse and Wind are companions living on the moor when the mountain cats arrive. Wind formerly was accompanied by Branch, who unexpectedly left her before she could hunt for herself, and later met Gorse.[27] After they both joined the moor cats in the hollow, they gained new names[8] and even ended up becoming mates having four kits together: Emberkit, Morning Whisker, Dust Muzzle, and Moth Flight,[29] although Emberkit and Morning Whisker untimely died due to the sickness spread by the rotten prey.[30][29] Wind Runner and Gorse Fur eventually gathered cats in another moor group, this time WindClan, and Wind Runner set herself forward as leader with her mate as deputy under the name of Windstar.[10][31] After her death, Gorse Fur took over as leader.[32]

Emberkit and Morning Whisker[]

Emberkit dies during Wind Runner's kitting, and Morning Whisker is later claimed by the sickness.[source?] Wind Runner is scared for her remaining kits, and this causes her to take her family and the group to start her own camp on the moor. During her nine lives ceremony, Wind Runner sees her kits in StarClan. Morning Whisker gives Wind Runner a life for resilience.[24]

Trivia[]

Interesting facts[]

  • While originally stated to have not taken -star as a suffix of her name,[9] this is later contradicted by Moth Flight's Vision.[63]
  • She is the first Clan leader ever to receive nine lives[20] and also the first to lose one.[26]
  • On the Warriors website family tree, Windstar's descendants live on through Mistmouse.[38]

Mistakes[]

  • She was mistakenly described with amber eyes.[64]
  • She was mistakenly called Wind Runner despite receiving her leader name.[10]
  • She was mistakenly called Windstar before receiving her leader name.[33]
  • She was mistakenly called Gorse Fur.[65][66]

Continuity[]

The following information is from sources considered non-canon or retconned.

  • In Secrets of the Clans, a 2007 field guide, Wind was the founder and first leader of WindClan. She worked with the other founders to develop the warrior code. She is described as proud, wily, and stubborn. Wind is also described as one of the fastest cats in the forest. Her mate was Gorsefur, who became her deputy, and later the second leader of WindClan, Gorsestar. Her descendants live on in WindClan through Ashfoot and Crowfeather.[67]
    • Later, Windstar banished Mothflight after she almost got killed when she was chasing a feather onto the Thunderpath. When Mothflight discovers the Moonstone, Mothflight protests that Windstar wouldn't let her return. One of the StarClan cats asks Windstar if that was true, and, turning around, Mothflight sees her leader. Another StarClan cat tells Windstar that Mothflight is to be her new medicine cat. Windstar merely nods before vanishing.[68]
