Forums: Index > Wiki Operations > Discussion Area > Policy - Role Play Characters

A new user joined a day or so ago, and created a few pages about some characters he/she role plays as. Since they weren't articles about "real" characters, I put an AfD tag on them. But then, I got to thinking. Kitsu had once said a while back, that we should consider whether or not to have pages on rp characters. And, this is a Wiki not just about Warriors, but about the phenomena surrounding it. But, if we are going to allow pages like that, then there need to be guidelines put in place.

  • First, we'd need an outline. We'd need different sections to fill in, such as Name, Clan (or affiliation), Rank (i.e. kit, apprentice, warrior, senior warrior, deputy, leader, medicine cat, elder, prey-hunter, cave-guard, healer, or none for rouges), Appearance, Personality, Family (if any), History (what happened to this cat in the past), and a list of sites on which he or she role plays. We could make a template for this, such as Template:FSpage, and that would probably make things a little more simple.
  • Second, would we need a page like FS Application be needed? I'd say it would, if only to list the instructions for how to create a proper RP character article, and to have links to the (if needed) above mentioned template.
  • Each section would, of course, have to be a certain length. If this wasn't established, we'd be waist deep in articles consisting of a sentence per section, which would be horrible. The number of sentences per section would have to be enough to make a proper article, yet not too much, so we don't scare potential article-creators away.
  • The article should probably be created by the "owner/rp'er" of the charrie. This helps with consistency, so we can keep facts straight.
  • Should we vote on them being accepted?
  • If we do decide to vote, should we appoint "acceptors", people who can vote in the acceptions, so that we don't have hundreds of users coming just to vote so their friend can be accepted? If so, obviously, the Sysops/Bureaucrats are automatically in, Hobbes should be in, Gorse should, as well...And, that's about all I can think of that should be up for the "acceptor rank".

This is the first Policy I've written, so it's a "little" rough, and could definitely use some touch-ups, which I'm sure Kitsu and Gorse can help me with, right? If anyone reading this spots anything that they think should be added, please, feel free to mention it. Eulalia459678(Salamandastron) 21:30, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

I have been thinking about this, and also about putting a fanfiction as a subpage from my userpage, and subpages from the RP might work best for this. I think we need a modified version of the Charcat template for cats in RPs/Fanfictions. We would need to remove the "Book Apearences" and make an Non-canon cats category for these to go in. We also should add a status section to the template. If an RP site wishes to add characters from the site, they should make a category for their site. We also probably need a tag, similar to the Stub tag, alerting any readers that the cat on this page is non-canon and any reference to cats which are canon are not true. We would need a obvious guide to creating a non-canon cat page, which would require "idiotproof" instructions, so that there are no problems if the directions are followed. We obviously need a context requirement, to avoid having A LOT of stub-like pages. There also should be the sections mentioned above (Appearence, personality, family, history) required in each page. If the page is a subpage from a page on the mainspace, we would need an acceptor vote. If it is a subsubpage from a user page (for users who wish to put their Fanfitions as a subpage on the Wiki), we would not need an acceptor vote. *swifty* 02:07, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

I've thought about it some too, and came up with an idea, and just forgot to mention it here (I think I mentioned it to Kitsufox, but with no response). Instead of having subpages and whatnot, we could ask a Wikia staff member to create a new namespace for us. That way, we could have, for example, Role Play:Randomtail, or Fanfiction:Silverstar's Quest. People would know that it's a Non-canon character, or if it's a fanfiction, just by looking at the title. But still, we would need a rpcharcat, and categories for the cats. We would also probably need to make a template kind of like the stub template, except warning the viewer that the page is non-canon, just in case they missed the title. I think that the community should vote on which idea - subpages or a new namespace - to use. After that, we can start working on non-canon cats. *swifty* 19:09, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Personally, I love the idea. I'd vote for it. I rp like a lot off other people so this would be pretty cool for someone wanting info about a specific site or something. --Ambergaze 19:12, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

I think we should vote. Maybe make a separate section for it, and some important people for each site can be featured on it. Just don't put it with the characters, as it will confuse readers. --Amberleaf 19:20, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

OK, I'll leave discussion open for 24 more hours, and then I'll open the vote. Eu(Talk!Contribs) 21:37, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

I think also to make sure there are no stale characters meaning ones that are not kept updated we should have someone monitor the frequency of edits to a character. While we know a user who updates their character every day or a few weeks is fine, we won't want someone who updates it every two to three months. I also think that yeah, they should be voted on based on length of the article and depth of the character. Also we could use the non-canon characters in a roleplay forum here, it may be big thinking but what good is posting a rp character profile here if you don't like to rp ;). Hmm what else maybe a character contest later on, this will encourage users to keep their characters updated what do you say ^_^.--Shippofox 13:14, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah,I guess we could if we have the space.--Jayfeather113 21:45, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Voting has now opened here. Eu(Talk!Contribs) 23:04, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Personally, I like the idea. Anyhow, let's see how the voting turns out! Hope we have a good turnout, as they say. Amberpaw 01:53, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

I like that idea a lot, but the pages would need to be monitored once and a way so that Warrior's Wikia doesn't lose any quality. Sonia 1000 23:00, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I think that a rp thing would be a great addition to the warriors wika. user:Thornstar of shadow clan

Yes, I think so too. However, I think there should be subpages because some cats in different RP sites might have the same name. It would be confusing. But I guess namepages won over. :P --Amberleaf 02:25, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
