"And I was wrong. Kits should be precious to all Clans. After we have taken these three back to WindClan, I will ask Ivystar to suggest an addition to the warrior code: that kits should be protected by every cat in the forest, regardless of which Clan they come from. All our futures depend on them."
— Graywing suggesting a new law in Code of the Clans, page 117

Graywing is a she-cat.[1]

History[]

In the Field Guides[]

Code of the Clans[]

"They're probably dead already. We can't risk our own lives trying to save them. Besides, they are WindClan kits. They are not ours to save."
―Graywing telling Brindleclaw not to go in the water Code of the Clans, page 113
Graywing is an ancient RiverClan medicine cat. She, along with her fellow RiverClan Clanmates, Brindleclaw and Foxwhisker, witness three WindClan kits fall into the river from the gorge. Graywing does not allow Brindleclaw to save them, stating that the kits are not their responsibility, and they are not of their Clan. Ivystar, the leader of RiverClan at the time, is shocked to hear about the WindClan kits, but agrees that it was a good thing Brindleclaw didn't try to save them. However, Graywing still feels guilty for not saving them, saying all she could think of was the kits, and the pitiful cry coming from the river as the kits are swept away.
That night, the three kits appear to her in a dream as the cats they would have been. Smallkit would have grown up to be Smallstar, the leader of WindClan, Wolfkit would have become Wolfheart, and Runningkit would have grown into the powerful warrior, Runningstorm. They lead her to the RiverClan nursery, and she sees that they are unharmed. The three WindClan cats teach her that kits are important to every Clan, and a Clan without kits may as well be dead. If one Clan dies, all Clans are vulnerable. Graywing understands and apologizes, though is initially terrified that the three would enact revenge on RiverClan's kits.
The next day, Graywing takes Brindleclaw and Foxwhisker back to the place where they saw the kits fall into the river, hoping to find their bodies. When Foxwhisker spots them washed up against a branch, they swim across to them and carry them back to the WindClan camp. Graywing carries Smallkit, Foxwhisker carries Runningkit, and Wolfkit is taken by Brindleclaw. This leads to the addition of another law in the warrior codeNo warrior may neglect a kit in pain or in danger, even if that kit is from a different Clan.

Brindleclaw: "How can you watch those kits drown without doing anything? What kind of medicine cat are you?"
Graywing: "One that is loyal to her Clan above all else."
