"It helps if I remember that I'm more use to my Clan where I am now. Every cat has the potential to be a warrior, but only a few of us can be medicine cats."
— Hawkheart to Yellowfang in Yellowfang's Secret, page 336

Hawkheart is a stone-gray tom with flecks of darker brown fur,[6] yellow eyes,[7] and graying whiskers.[8]

Hawkheart was a WindClan medicine cat under Heatherstar's leadership in the forest territories. He originally served as a warrior before becoming a medicine cat, and was said to have an unusually strong and rough personality for a cat of his role. During an attack on WindClan's camp, Hawkheart violently defended his herbs from Moonflower and killed her; her daughter, Bluepaw, blamed him for her mother's death. He took on Barkpaw as his apprentice, who later became Barkface.

Tallstar's Revenge[]

«He wondered if Hawkheart was mellowing now that gray whiskers were showing on his muzzle. But he suspected it was Hopkit's warmth that had thawed the stern, old medicine cat.»
—Talltail about Hawkheart and Hopkit Tallstar's Revenge, page 484
During Heatherstar's leadership ceremony, she stumbles from the pain of receiving a new life, and Hawkheart asks if she is alright. Daisytail replies she is strong. When StarClan leaves, he tells Heatherstar that they should return to the Moonstone since their ancestors have faded, and he pads down the slope and into the shadows.
Later, Hawkheart, Heatherstar, and Reedfeather are at the bottom of the Meeting Hollow, their breath billowing as they speak. The medicine cat looks up and catches Tallkit's eye, murmuring that their youngest kit is exploring again; Palebird had already warned her son that Hawkheart had little patience for kits. He tells Tallkit to stay under cover, as he could attract buzzards. Reedfeather tells him not to scare Tallkit before asking Shrewkit what he was showing Tallkit. Heatherstar warns the two kits to be careful, and Hawkheart tells them not to come to him if they get a sprained paw. After Tallkit gets a thorn stuck in his paw, Barkkit pulls it out. He expresses interest in becoming a medicine cat, and is going to ask Heatherstar to become Hawkheart's apprentice. Tallkit imagines that Hawkheart will be impressed by the kit's courage, and Barkkit, reassured, goes to ask the leader. She approves, and he is apprenticed to the medicine cat as Barkpaw.
During Tallpaw's apprentice ceremony, he sees Hawkheart, who is soon joined by Barkpaw. Afterwards, the tom pads up behind Tallpaw and tells him that although he thinks he has been given the easier path of being a tunneler, it is a path that leads him further away from his kin, and he should be careful. Shortly after Tallpaw becomes an apprentice, Shrewpaw teases him for being a tunneler, and Hawkheart tells the apprentices that everyone chooses their own destinies. Before the following Gathering, he tells Whiteberry that he should be resting, but the elder insists on going. Barkpaw tells his mentor that he gave Whiteberry heather blossoms as he had been instructed, and Hawkheart murmurs his approval. At the Gathering, he greets Goosefeather and jokingly asks if he has killed anyone. The ThunderClan medicine cat responds that he has not done so on purpose.
After a fight with ShadowClan, Redclaw asks Hawkheart to check on Brackenwing, who is severely injured; however, the she-cat dies shortly thereafter. Afterward, Hawkheart asks to look at Tallpaw's wounds, but the apprentice brushes him off, stating that he killed Brackenwing. Hawkheart scoffs and tells him that WindClan's safety does not rest with him alone, and that the others on the patrol do not blame him. Later, Tallpaw is in a tunnel as it collapses, and he is dragged out by Woollytail. Hawkheart gives him thyme before looking him over. He comments that the wounds will heal with time, and then orders cats to fetch moss so he can clean the mud out of Tallpaw's wounds. The next morning, the medicine cat tells the wounded apprentice to stay in his nest, much to his disappointment.
Later, the apprentices are going to the Moonstone, and Hawkheart prepares traveling herbs for them. There are two piles, and Tallpaw asks if he must eat both, and Hawkheart responds that it is not recommended. Shrewpaw comes in and begins to argue with Tallpaw, but Hawkheart breaks up the fight, and tells them to eat the herbs. At Palebird's kitting, Hawkheart and Barkpaw supervise while Plumclaw reassures a nervous Woollytail. Afterwards, Talltail asks if his mother is okay, and once he and Woollytail are inside, Hawkheart warns that Palebird is exhausted. As Hawkheart leaves, she asks how she is supposed to feed her new litter, and he assures her that they will do the work and she has enough milk.
Later, Hopkit cuts his paw on some sharp stones and is taken to the medicine den to be treated as soon as possible. However, he soon gets an infection and develops a fever. Talltail takes him outside to cool him down, but Hawkheart orders him to take the kit back inside, and says he will give Hopkit the herbs he has. He orders Meadowslip to leave so that he can focus on treating her kit. As time progresses and Hopkit heals, Hawkheart argues that Hopkit can hunt and become a warrior if he can limp, no matter what Heatherstar said about him never being able to hunt or fight. He adds that he can argue his enemies to death, which the kit disputes. Talltail notes that Hopkit may be thawing the stern medicine cat.

Yellowfang's Secret[]

"You have your full name already, so you must have been a warrior before you decided to follow the way of a medicine cat. I was a warrior first, like you. I’ve found my warrior training very useful, and I expect you will too."
―Hawkheart greeting Yellowfang as a medicine cat apprentice Yellowfang's Secret, page 249
Goosefeather halts beside the Moonstone after having led the medicine cats. He nods to each medicine cat, and with an impatient twitch of his tail, Hawkheart mutters to Goosefeather to get on with the ceremony. The ThunderClan medicine cat glares at him, but performs Featherpaw's medicine cat apprentice ceremony. He sits with the other medicine cats as the ceremony progresses.
Hawkheart is at the half-moon meeting when Yellowfang goes with Sagewhisker to become a medicine cat apprentice. He is supportive of the ShadowClan cat, telling her that he was once a warrior as well and that he had always found his previous training to still be useful as a medicine cat; this surprises Yellowfang. Hawkheart repeats this advice when Yellowfang goes to the Moonstone with her mentor to become a full medicine cat. Hawkheart is friendly towards Yellowfang once more when she goes to the Moonstone without Sagewhisker, recalling experiences of how his time as a warrior has helped him to heal wounds. He states that he enjoys being a medicine cat, and that having his position has set him apart from the warriors as very few can attain his role. He is later with his apprentice, Barkpaw. Yellowfang and her apprentice Runningpaw greet them warmly.

Crookedstar's Promise[]

Hawkheart is at a Gathering when Bluepaw is introducing the medicine cats, and explains her scorn to Crookedpaw, since the harsh medicine cat had killed her mother, Moonflower, in a battle between ThunderClan and WindClan. At another Gathering many moons later, Pinestar throws a veiled challenge at the other Clans, stating that ThunderClan's boundaries are secure; Hawkheart calls out that WindClan has stuck to their side of the borders.

Bluestar's Prophecy[]

"Well, if it isn't the kit-warrior. Are you an apprentice at last?"
―Hawkheart to Bluepaw Bluestar's Prophecy, page 156
When Bluepaw helps drag the wounded Leopardpaw away from the battle between ThunderClan and WindClan, Hawkheart sees how small she is, and sarcastically gasps that ThunderClan has brought kits. Bluepaw protests that she is not a kit; Hawkheart stalks toward her threateningly, and prepares to attack her, knowing that she is too young and small to be able to defeat him. Heatherstar, WindClan's leader, stops him, telling him he needs to help the injured cats. Just then, the ThunderClan cats break into the medicine den to destroy his herbs. Hawkheart is forced to leave, and Bluepaw escapes unharmed. She is unsure of whether Hawkheart was really a medicine cat or not until Swiftbreeze, a ThunderClan warrior, says that he had been the fiercest warrior in WindClan until StarClan called him to become a medicine cat.
During the fight, Hawkheart attacks Bluepaw's mother, Moonflower, as she appears from his den. He leaps on her and flings her across the blood-filled clearing by the throat, killing her. When Bluepaw says that Moonflower should not have died, Hawkheart claims the apprentice's mother destroyed the medicine supplies, and that was reason enough to kill her. When Bluepaw says that StarClan gave Goosefeather, the ThunderClan medicine cat, a sign that they had to attack, Hawkheart questions how much they should really rely on the tom's words.
At a Gathering a few moons later, he taunts Bluepaw, calling her a kit-warrior. Bluepaw is enraged, and Sunfall, the ThunderClan deputy, tells her that StarClan will be the one to judge him for his actions. At a later Gathering, Crookedpaw, an apprentice of RiverClan, asks why Bluepaw says Hawkheart's name so hatefully, and she tells him that Hawkheart killed her mother.

In the Novellas[]

Pinestar's Choice[]

During the battle between ThunderClan and WindClan in WindClan's camp, Hawkheart bolts across the damaged camp and crouches at the entrance of his medicine den. Two warriors of each Clan have entered his den, and the medicine cat lashes his tail as if he is waiting for prey. Moonflower bursts out of the den and Hawkheart lunges at her, hurling her off her paws. He springs onto the she-cat and sinks her teeth into the warrior's neck. Moonflower manages to struggle free and smacks Hawkheart's muzzle, but the tom is more powerful. He grabs Moonflower by the throat and throws her across the grass, killing her. Hawkheart justifies himself by claiming that Moonflower was trying to destroy his medicine supply. Bluepaw reveals that Goosefeather said that StarClan wanted them to fight the battle, and Hawkheart questions how reliable Goosefeather's word actually is. The medicine cat lashes his tail before stalking away, hunching against the rain. Bluepaw asks what he means.

Goosefeather's Curse[]

Content Warning: This section documents the appearance of Hawkheart in Goosefeather's Curse, where he was mistakenly depicted as a medicine cat apprentice.

Hawkpaw: "Why did I have to wait until I was six moons until you apprenticed me? Didn't StarClan send you a sign about me?"
Chiveclaw: "You became my apprentice when it was right for you. Now be quiet and close your eyes. Make sure you touch the Moonstone with your muzzle, remember."
—Hawkpaw and Chiveclaw Goosefeather's Curse, chapter 4
Hawkpaw is the apprentice of the WindClan medicine cat Chiveclaw. He is seen on Goosepaw’s first visit to the Moonstone, demanding to know why he had to wait until he was six moons old to be made an apprentice. Chiveclaw sighs and tells Hawkpaw that he was made an apprentice when the time was right. He is then told to be quiet, close his eyes and make sure his muzzle touches the Moonstone. When Goosefeather is given his full name, Hawkpaw, now Hawkheart, is seen nodding to welcome the new medicine cat.

The Ultimate Guide[]

It is mentioned on Pinestar's page that the attack of WindClan's camp was as bloody as Pinestar feared, with the death of Moonflower in the claws of warrior-turned-medicine cat, Hawkheart.
