- As Firestar looks for more cats to join SkyClan, he meets a kittypet named Hutch. He offers cream to Firestar, Cherry, and Boris as they leave, but Firestar, refuses, and he makes Cherry and Boris refuse as well. He went to the meeting, and became known as Shortwhisker. He often said he didn't fit in with the clan when he made mistakes, and Firestar tries to persuade him that he does fit in, and he must be patient, and eventually, he will fit in more. While Firestar was searching for a medicine cat, he considered Shortwhisker, but then reconsiders, as Sandstorm said he had basically frozen at the sight of Patchfoot's blood. After Firestar had killed the Rat Leader, the battle was over, and Firestar was just getting ready to return to ThunderClan, Shortwhisker finally admitted that the rat attack, the sight of Patchfoot's blood, and the fact that he did not fit in, that living in a clan and trying to be a clan cat was entirely too much for him to handle. He left, promising to visit, leaving behind the name "Shortwhisker", returning to the name "Hutch".
