Jaypaw leaves tansy near the Twoleg nest for the sickcats. Lionblaze emerges from the tunnel nearby with catmint gathered from WindClanterritory, and Jaypaw is excited, though Lionblaze seems agitated. Leafpool arrives and is overjoyed to see the catmint, and Jaypaw vaguely answers her questions when she asks where he found it. They bring the catmint to the sick cats. When Leafpool reminds him there is a half-moon meeting of medicine cats that night, Jaypaw wonders how Littlecloud explained ShadowClan's betrayal of StarClan to their warrior ancestors, and looks forward to walking in the pawprints of the Ancients at the Moonpool.
Jaypaw wonders if any of the pawprints at the Moonpool belonged to Jay's Wing. Leafpool tells him it is time to receive his full medicine cat name for having saved his Clan, and Jaypaw briefly feels guilty about lying to Leafpool and using Lionblaze and Kestrelpaw in order to obtain the catmint. Jaypaw feels intense love and pride coming from Leafpool, and is surprised she holds such strong feelings towards him. He briefly feels Half Moon's presence, and wonders if they could have been mates if things were different. Leafpool gives Jaypaw the name Jayfeather, and the other medicine cats congratulate him. Leafpool doesn't tell the other medicine cats about the reason for Jaypaw's promotion in order to avoid exposing ThunderClan's weakness. When Jayfeather sleeps beside the Moonpool after the ceremony, he dreams of Brightspirit and her parents, and thanks the she-cat for her help.
When Leafpool and Jayfeather return to camp in the morning, Brambleclaw is organizing patrols. The deputy asks if they saw a fox on their trip, and Jayfeather reports a faint scent of fox near the WindClan border. Brambleclaw sends a small patrol to ensure it doesn't pose a threat to the nursery or the cats at the Twoleg den. Mousefur complains about her bedding, and Foxpaw and Icepaw mutter about her lack of gratitude. Jayfeather intimidates them until they run off to gather fresh moss. Leafpool prepares strengthening herbs for all the exhausted cats. Brambleclaw accidentally assigns Ashfur to two patrols, and Berrynose points this out. Brambleclaw begins to apologize, but Squirrelflight lashes out at Ashfur in Brambleclaw's defense. Jayfeather thinks that she's feeling stressed about Firestar's illness and her own injury. Brambleclaw tells her to be quiet, and Squirrelflight storms off. Ashfur acts coldly as Brambleclaw corrects his mistake and sends him off on a hunting patrol. Jayfeather wonders if there is more history between Brambleclaw, Ashfur, and Squirrelflight than he knows about, but figures it doesn't have anything to do with him.
I, Leafpool, medicine cat of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of a medicine cat, and with your help he will serve his Clan for many moons.
