"My greatest loyalty will always be with StarClan and my Clanmates."
— Pebble Heart expressing his loyalty to Half Moon in Moth Flight's Vision, page 478

Pebble Heart is a soft-furred,[10] dark gray tabby tom[11] with a white mark on his chest[2] and amber eyes.[12]

Pebble Heart was the first medicine cat of ShadowClan that served under Shadowstar's and Ravenstar's leaderships in the forest territories. He was born to Turtle Tail and Tom alongside his siblings, Owl Eyes and Sparrow Fur. His mother was killed by a monster, which devastated him deeply, but was raised on the moor by his adopted father, Gray Wing. As a young cat, Pebble Heart discovered a passion for medicine, learning all he could from Dappled Pelt and Cloud Spots. He chose to remain with Tall Shadow after her group split and decided to go to the pine forest. He was devastated when Gray Wing died and was picked by StarClan to be ShadowClan's first medicine cat. Pebble Heart became a skilled and compassionate medicine cat to his Clanmates and stood by Shadowstar's side till she died in battle, losing her ninth life. Pebble Heart ascended to StarClan after his death.

Dawn of the Clans[]

«Pebble Heart had not changed. Turtle Tail's quietest kit had always been so serious, and yet in his seriousness there had always been kindness and wisdom.»
—Gray Wing about Pebble Heart Path of Stars, page 303
Pebble Heart, Sparrow Fur, and Owl Eyes are born to Turtle Tail after her return to the moor, with their father being a kittypet named Tom. However, Turtle Tail's mate, Gray Wing, becomes the litter's adopted father. Pebble Heart becomes interested in medicine and learns to heal from Dappled Pelt and Cloud Spots. Eventually, he begins having strange dreams, reminding Gray Wing of the old healer, Stoneteller. However, he often has nightmares of a terrible battle.
When Tom arrives from the Twolegplace looking for his kits, Turtle Tail demands that he will never see them. Even so, Tom finds the kits and takes them while the camp is distracted by Wind Runner's kitting. They are rescued by Thunder and Lightning Tail, but not before Turtle Tail is killed on the Thunderpath, fulfilling Pebble Heart's dream of death. The kit is devastated, but vows to stay with Gray Wing on the moor, warning him of danger before he heads out for Fourtrees, where Clear Sky initiates a battle with the camp cats.
He discovers a deathly sickness in a mouse brought to camp, and despite being a kit, joins a patrol to search for its cure. When the Early Settlers are ordered by the spirit cats to split into different groups, Pebble Heart joins Tall Shadow in the pine forest, though his siblings follow Clear Sky. As Gray Wing's wheezing progresses, Pebble Heart treats him with coltsfoot, but the illness proves fatal, and Pebble Heart remains at Gray Wing's side when he dies.

Quotes[]

"There's one particular dream I've had a few times. I was walking down a long, dark tunnel, and there was a glittering light at the end, as if a star was shining underground. [...] Oh, no! It was exciting! I really wanted to get to the end of the tunnel and find out what the light was. And it was weird...I couldn't see any other cats, but I felt like there were cats there, trying to tell me something. Only I couldn't hear what they were saying. I thought if I could get to the star thing, I would understand, but every time I have the dream, I wake up before I reach the end of the tunnel."
―Pebble Heart Thunder Rising, pages 225-226

Pebble Heart: "So much blood! So much! It's not right for kin to fight!"
Gray Wing: "What do you mean?"
Pebble Heart: "Kin mustn't fight. [...] The worst part of the dream, was that you were gone."
Gray Wing: "Hush."
Pebble Heart: "Turtle Tail was gone too. We were alone. Just me and Sparrow Fur and Owl Eyes. We were all alone."
Gray Wing: "It just was just a dream. We will always be close."

Half Moon: "But you can be fathers. Do you think a father loves his kits any less?"
Gray Wing: "Pebble Heart. Each medicine cat must make the same choice. Live like an ordinary Clan cat and take a mate. Raise a family if you like. But if you do, renounce your medicine cat duties."

"You did great. Even that first day, you were giving Gray Wing herbs to help his breathing, and you treated the injury on Mud Paw's shoulder. You've always taken such good care of the Clan. I'm glad you chose to join us. And I'm glad you're hear to look after our Clanmates."
