"Brambleclaw saw that the stream flowed out of the lake; it was wider than the streams they had crossed previously, too broad to jump across, with deep channels curving around pebbly shallows and small, stony islands. The water looked green and cool, shaded by reeds and the occasional tree that grew along the banks."
Brambleclaw seeing the stream for the first time in Starlight, page 54

The River Alba, or the Stream is a split body of water that feeds into the lake, and provides shelter to RiverClan's camp in the lake territories.[3] As well as providing the Clan shelter, it is also source of prey, useful for fishing for the water-inclined cats. Mistyfoot, along with a patrol of other warriors were sent to scout out locations for the Clans, and she discovered the stream and RiverClan's new camp beside the lake.[1]

Description[]

The stream flows underneath the Twoleg half-bridge and is surrounded by reeds. It's a large body of moving water, flowing out of the lake and is full of deep channels that curve around pebbly shallows and little, stony islands. Along the banks, sparse trees can be found, creating shade as well as reeds and bracken too. The water is noted to be green in color. Fish can also be found in abundance, seen by ripples in the water's surface.[4] Further along the stream, straying away from the lake's edge, there is a small slope where the water falls down and splits into two bodies of water. Crossing this section leads to RiverClan's camp as it is nestled safely between the fork of water and clumps of hazel and brambles.[5]

Location history[]

Main article: The Long Dry
During a drought in the lake territories, the water level of the stream protecting RiverClan's camp drop dangerously low. A visiting ThunderClan patrol notices this, taking in the wilted vegetation nearby and the clearly visible stepping stones that are normally to cross the water.[6]

History[]

In The New Prophecy arc[]

Starlight[]

Mistyfoot and a patrol of other Clan cats explore the new territories, scouting for places for each Clan to make their camps. She and the others discover the stream and subsequently a likely place for RiverClan's camp as the area is protected by the natural vegatation and water.[1] After the patrol explore the new territories thoroughly, they report back to their Clan leaders. There, Hawkfrost challenges Mistyfoot's decision, instead trying to claim the island as RiverClan's new camp instead. However, Mistyfoot manages to convince Leopardstar to seek out the stream instead, pointing out that it offers appropriate shelter and likely would be away from Twoleg interference.[7]

Twilight[]

Mistyfoot escorts Leafpool to RiverClan camp via the stream as the latter delivers herbs for Mothwing.[8]

Sunset[]

Feathertail and Leafpool cross the stream in the latter's dreams to visit Willowpaw in RiverClan's camp to give her guidance from StarClan. While visiting the camp in her dreams, Leafpool notices that the medicine den is close to the stream.[9]

In the Power of Three arc[]

Dark River[]

RiverClan has said to be having trouble with Twoleg kits disturbing and intruding them in their camp on the river, so they are forced to move out and live on the Island that is held for Gatherings while they try to force the kits away from their original camp. The Clan cats pile rocks in the river to make a dam to force the water level to rise and to prevent the Twoleg kits from getting to their camp.[10]

In the Omen of the Stars arc[]

The Fourth Apprentice[]

When Rainstorm leads the ThunderClan patrol while they take him back to his Clan, it is described that the RiverClan camp was nestled in between the two streams that branch off from the river. It was said that normally the river waters were very high, but the land had run completely dry. The lushness of plants that lived on the side of the stream was wilted and shriveled. Rainstorm leads the patrol over the streambed, which was dried up due to the drought as well. The Clan then encounters Mistyfoot, in which they proceed to give Rainstorm back to his home Clan.[6]

Trivia[]

Interesting facts[]

  • River Alba was one of the first landmarks, alongside RiverClan's camp, to be discovered when the Clans moved beside the lake.[11]

Continuity[]

The following information is from sources considered non-canon or retconned.

  • In Secrets of the Clans, a 2007 field guide, Mistyfoot shows the reader RiverClan's lake camp and the territory, including the stream. She explains the streams are full of fish and that RiverClan at first struggled to catch fish in the lake, as they were used to fishing methods from the old territories. The RiverClan deputy asks the readers if they are able to swim like RiverClan cats, or if they would only flail around instead, as she notes the streams have deeper parts. The she-cat also adds that there are pebble islands that are used to help cross the stream.[12]
