"I am no cat's friend. I know too much for friendship. Be glad that you will never be burdened with the knowledge that I have. My curse is to live forever, knowing what has been and what has yet to be, powerless to change anything."
— Rock to Jayfeather in The Fourth Apprentice, page 278

Rock is a nearly furless tom[1] with blind,[4] gray eyes.[4]

Rock is an ancient healer from a time long before the Clans when there were tribes of cats living around the lake. He appears immortal, having lost many of his senses and much of his fur due to age. In the time of the Ancients, Rock would mark the softpaws who succeeded their trial in the tunnels to become sharpclaws on a stick. He has the power to summon cats in dreams, and has absolute knowledge of the past and future.

Power of Three[]

"Make your own future, Jayfeather. Don't expect it to be dropped at your paws like a piece of fresh-kill."
―Rock to Jayfeather Sunrise (book), page 82
When Fallen Leaves attempts the trial to become a sharpclaw, he encounters Rock, who questions if it will rain, which Fallen Leaves denies. The rain comes, drowning Fallen Leaves in the tunnels. Many moons later, Rock's stick is discovered by Jaypaw. When Jaypaw, Hollypaw, Lionpaw, Heatherpaw, Breezepaw, and three WindClan kits become lost in the tunnels, Rock marks that all will live. Jaypaw eventually seeks out the old healer, who provides information on the Kin of your Kin prophecy, as well as the fate of the Ancients, which Jayfeather discovers by journeying into the past as Jay's Wing. After it is revealed that Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw are not Jayfeather's parents, he confronts Rock for answers, though the ancient tom bids Jayfeather look elsewhere.

Omen of the Stars[]

"You fulfilled a prophecy written at the beginning of time and gave power to enemies who should long since have faded from the memories of all cats! Now, because of your existence, the Clans face their darkest moment."
―Rock to the Three The Last Hope, page 124
Jayfeather continues to seek out Rock, who is reluctant to advise him on the rise of the Dark Forest, and defends his decision to withhold the truth about Jayfeather's parentage. Enraged, Jayfeather destroys the ancient stick. When Flametail falls into the frozen lake and Jayfeather attempts to save him, Rock urges Jayfeather to let his friend go. After Jayfeather journeys to the time of the Ancients once again, Rock demands Jayfeather to name Half Moon as the first Stoneteller. Before the battle against the Dark Forest, Rock appears to Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Dovewing in a dream, criticizing them for ignoring their destinies and remembering the spirits of evil cats, claiming that the rise of the Dark Forest came about as a result.

Quotes[]

«This creature's pelt was like moleskin, the fur gone except for a few tufts and his sightless eyes bulged like eggs. His long twisted claws flexed at the smooth branch that lay at his paws.»
—Fallen Leaves about Rock Dark River, page 3

Rock: "I can feel your surprise. It pricks my pelt like gorse."
Fallen Leaves: "I-I'm sorry. It's just I did not expect-"
Rock: "You did not expect a cat could grow so ugly. A cat needs wind and sun to shine his fur and good hunting to trim his claws. But I must stay close to our warrior ancestors, those who have taken their place beneath the earth."
Fallen Leaves: "And for that we thank you."
Rock: "Don't thank me. It was a destiny I was bound to follow. Besides, you may not feel so grateful to me once your initiation has begun. The uncrossed lines mark the cats who went into the tunnels but did not return."
Fallen Leaves: "Which tunnels did they go into?"
Rock: "I cannot help you. To become a sharpclaw, you must find your own way out. I can only send you on your way with the blessing of our ancestors."
Fallen Leaves: "Can't you give me any advice?"
Rock: "Without light, you will have only your instincts. Follow them and if they are true, you will be safe."
Fallen Leaves: "What if they are not true?"
Rock: "Then you will die in darkness."
—Fallen Leaves and Rock Dark River, pages 3-4

Rock: "You wanted to speak with me?"
Jaypaw: "Why did you stop talking to me? I tried and I tried, but you wouldn't answer."
Rock: "Say what you have to say."
Jaypaw: "Are you a part of StarClan?"
Rock: "No. I share tongues with the ones who came before."
—Jaypaw and Rock talking Outcast, pages 59-60

Midnight: "Since the dawn of time, we have known each other. Since first cat put paw beside water."
Rock: "We watched the first sunrise over the lake."
Midnight: "It burst water into flame. And in fiery reflection, we see future of all cats: Tribe of Rushing Water, five Clan, four Clan, forest, and lake."
Rock: "We saw your whole journey, from lake to forest and back. The prophecies all came from that first reflected sunrise-the cat with a pelt of flame that would save the Clans, the silver cat that would save the Tribe of Rushing Water, and finally the four who would carry the last hope, not just of the Clans, but of light itself."
Midnight: "Now we fear we see a final sunset that ends your story."
Half Moon: "But the four? They will save us, surely?"
Midnight: "They came as we saw they would and, when they came, they lit the darkest fires. So you and all long-dead cats burn like stars once more."
Rock: "But evil is coming."
Midnight: "Darkness we saw born like littermate alongside the light. Now all must stand and fight."
—Midnight, Half Moon, and Rock discussing "the four", and the fate of the Clans The Last Hope, page 3

"It was never my duty to save anyone! What is the point of a life held in the paws of another? There must be choice. There must be freedom. I can point the way but every cat walks on its own paws."
―Rock to Broken Shadow about Fallen Leaves The Last Hope, page 4

Jayfeather: "You made me leave Flametail in the lake! Did you want the other Clans to think I was a murderer?"
Rock: "What does it matter? I couldn’t let you die trying to change another cat’s destiny! Why do you keep straying from the paths we laid down for you?"
—Jayfeather and Rock arguing about Flametail The Last Hope, pages 122-123

Rock: "The Clans have brought this battle upon themselves. You bear grudges too long and refuse to let go of cats so cruel and unnatural they deserve to be forgotten! You keep them alive in your memories and let them find kindred spirits at the edges of StarClan where no star dares shine. Why couldn't you just let them fade into the past?"
Dovewing: "Like you? Do you wish you'd been left to fade?"
Rock: "Even me."
—Rock bashing the Clan cats The Last Hope, page 124
