Samwise is a large, elderly, male dog^[1] with loose teeth.^[2]

In the Stand-Alone Manga

The Rise of Scourge

Samwise is a frail, elderly dog who Tiny runs into accidentally. After the rogues tease him about his kittypet collar, he abandons the chicken the elderly female rogue had offered him and wanders off angrily. He walks into an alley, where he is startled by Samwise, whom is sleeping. Tiny stands still, frozen in fear, thinking that the large dog will eat him, until Samwise's owner calls the dog over. Seeing Samwise limp away with much effort put in, Tiny is confident that Samwise is an old dog, and cannot eat him.

Samwise leaves one of his teeth behind, and Tiny comments that he'll soon have no teeth. Tiny tries using the tooth to pry off his collar, but it gets stuck in it instead. This tooth is the first of many later seen in his collar.

Tiny: "Stupid collar. Stupid cats. I'll find a way to get this thing off, and when I do, I'll-It's a dog! Dogs kill cats, and, and eat them sometimes, and I think I might pass out—but wait."

Samwise's owner: "Sa–a–am! Samwise! Here, boy!"
