Chapter description

Leafstar walks out of the gorge to check on the spot the Twoleg kit was once lying in. She can still smell the old Twoleg scent. She heads back to camp and watches Sharpclaw organizing the morning patrols. The leader overhears her Clanmates talking about the recent events with the Twoleg. She also notices the Twolegplace cats huddling in a group together. Leafstar catches Fallowfern's kits reenacting the events with the Twoleg kit. She hears a greeting from the top of the gorge and notices the daylight-warriors arriving in camp. Leafstar immediately jumps on to the Rockpile and calls for a Clan meeting.

The leader begins with announcing a new warrior ceremony. She celebrates the successful mission of saving the Twoleg kit and Snookpaw's bravery to help lead the mission. She asks the young apprentice's mentor, Billystorm, if he's learned how to be a warrior and understands the warrior code. The ginger-and-white tom agrees to all the terms, and Leafstar calls upon their warrior ancestors to look over Snookpaw. The leader gives him a new name, Snookthorn, and the Clan cheers for the new warrior.

Snookthorn turns to his leader and admits that he wants to leave SkyClan. The camp erupts into disbelief. The black-and-white tom tells Leafstar that after the mission with the Twolegs, he doesn't want to become an enemy of them. He believes that coming home to his Twolegs in scratches and torn-up pelts is unfair to them. Sharpclaw asks the new warrior if he lied during his warrior ceremony, and his Clanmates call him a traitor. Billystorm tries to reason with the tom, but he tells his Clan that he is a kittypet only. Leafstar sends him off, and Snookthorn walks out of the gorge.

Leafstar spots her deputy by a pool of water, and they confide in each other about the loss of Snookthorn. Sharpclaw suggests thinking about the daylight-warriors loyalty, including Billystorm. She refutes tom's words and walks away without waiting for a response. She catches Billystorm returning home to his housefolk, and the tom mentions that he will talk to Snookthorn. Leafstar reminds the tom that Snookthorn will always be welcome into the Clan. The tom tells her that she cannot force cats to be loyal to the Clan or the warrior code. The two cats part ways, and Leafstar finds Plumkit and Nettlekit performing their own warrior ceremony. She watches them reenact the events of Snookthorn's warrior ceremony, and Fallowfern calls the kits back in the nursery. Leafstar tells the kits that they could always leave if they don't want to continue being Clan cats. The kits apologize profusely and run back to their mother.

Leafstar sleeps and imagines breaking into Billystorm's Twoleg den but is surrounded by a swarm of angry kittypets for invading their territory. She opens her eyes and still finds herself in her den. Leafstar looks out her den and finds Sharplcaw, Stick, Cora, Shorty, and Coal silently walking up a trail. She wonders where her deputy is taking them.
