"Fox dung to all that! I don't want to be a SkyClan cat! I've always been ShadowClan, and I always will be."
— Slatefur after hearing of ShadowClan's annexation in River of Fire, page 256

Slatefur is a sleek gray tom.[8]

Slatefur is a ShadowClan warrior under Tigerstar's leadership in the lake territories. He was born to Pinenose and Spikefur alongside Lionkit, Birchkit, and Puddlekit as Slatekit, raised with Violetkit as a foster sibling. He became Slatepaw and joined the Kin when Darktail took over ShadowClan, taking on the name Slatefur. After escaping with Berryheart, Sparrowtail, and Cloverfoot, he was reunited with Tigerheart, and joined his patrol back to ShadowClan. Upon his return, Slatefur trained Frondwhisker and became mates with Cinnamontail, fathering Firkit, Whisperkit, Bloomkit, and Streamkit.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

The Apprentice's Quest[]

Slatekit is a ShadowClan kit, and Pinenose is his mother.

Thunder and Shadow[]

Violetkit notices that Slatekit and his siblings have moved into their own nests in the nursery. Slatekit and the others argue that they are almost apprentices and much too old to share their mother's nest. With her chin over the edge of her and Pinenose's nest, Violetkit watches the cats of the nursery sleeping around her. Slatekit stirs slightly in his sleep, but he doesn't wake up, and Violetkit wonders if he and his siblings ever feel that they don't belong.

Shattered Sky[]

Slatepaw has joined the Kin with the name Slatefur.

Darkest Night[]

Slatefur is mentioned by Rowanstar, alongside his other missing Clanmates. While Rowanstar is unsure of where they have gone, many are shocked that they have not returned to their ShadowClan kin. When Leafpool reveals that Tree, a loner, is able to raise the spirits of ShadowClan's fallen, ShadowClan learns more about Slatefur's residence. Puddleshine asks Lioneye, Mistcloud, and Dawnpelt if they know where Slatefur is. They reply that if Slatefur is not among the fallen cats present or in StarClan, then it is likely that he is still alive.

River of Fire[]

Slatefur is one of the four ShadowClan warriors that are at the Moonpool when Violetshine, Alderheart, and others arrive to check on Tigerheart. Violetshine breathes out their names, exclaiming that everyone thought they were dead.
As the night crawls on, Cloverfoot murmurs that it'll be good to go back to ShadowClan, which prompts Violetshine to explain miserably that ShadowClan doesn't exist anymore. After she informs them of everything that had happened since they ran away, making Slatefur loudly declare that he doesn't want to be a SkyClan cat, and he's always been ShadowClan and always will be. His loud tone catches the attention of Leafstar and Hawkwing, who look at him in annoyance. Slatefur witnesses Tigerheart become resurrected as Tigerstar and listens to Tigerstar's speech. Although Slatefur is silent, he joins his Clanmates in cheering his new name. Afterward, Leafstar tells him to take his Clan home. He calls to his cats to follow him, and ShadowClan follows him as he heads down the moorland.

The Raging Storm[]

Slatefur begins training his first apprentice, Frondpaw.

In The Broken Code arc[]

Lost Stars[]

His apprentice Frondpaw has now become a warrior named Frondwhisker.

Veil of Shadows[]

"What, more of you?"
―Slatefur upon seeing more ThunderClan refugees Veil of Shadows, page 32
Slatefur is on patrol with Snowbird and Whorlpelt when they come across Bristlefrost and ThunderClan's exiles. He questions the cats and is then told by Snowbird to continue their patrol while she escorts the exiles to ShadowClan camp.

Darkness Within[]

When Shadowsight returns from his second hunting patrol after being demoted to apprentice duties, he shamefully recalls how the other cats in the patrol, including Slatefur, had all caught something. Slatefur had reassured Shadowsight that it was only his second attempt at hunting. He is then seen laying his catch down on the fresh-kill pile.

A Light in the Mist[]

Slatefur joins the chant of Lightleap's name when the latter volunteers to go to the Dark Forest to break the barrier.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

He and Cinnamontail are now mates and Cinnamontail has recently given birth to their kits: Bloomkit, Whisperkit, Streamkit, and Firkit. When Sunbeam enters ShadowClan camp injured, Slatefur asks if it was foxes.

Sky[]

While Cinnamontail, Bloomkit, and Streamkit recover from greencough, Slatefur watches over Firkit and Whisperkit play with Birchkit.

In the Super Editions[]

Tigerheart's Shadow[]

Warning: Rippletail's appearances in Tigerheart's Shadow are a mistake as confirmed by Kate Cary and further installments in the canon. Slatefur was meant to be in the patrol traveling with Tigerheart.
"I don't know, Berryheart ... this is awfully sudden. Just abandon everything? All the other cats?"
―Slatefur hesitant to escape with Berryheart Tigerheart's Shadow, comic
When Berryheart survives being drowned by Darktail, she runs into Slatefur on her way to escape from the Clans. Slatefur asks where she has been, and Berryheart replies that she doesn't have time to explain, but urges him to join her in fleeing the lake. However, Slatefur remarks that her demands were too sudden, and questions if they could just abandon their Clanmates. Berryheart concedes, instead asking Slatefur to send a message to her mate, Sparrowtail, and daughter, Needletail. Slatefur agrees to tell them where she has gone, but mentions that Darktail likes Needletail, and it may be best to stay put. Still, Berryheart insists on leaving, and Slatefur promises to deliver her message.

In the Novellas[]

Tawnypelt's Clan[]

Tawnypelt spots him sharpening his claws against a rock in ShadowClan's camp, and recalls when he and many other cats betrayed ShadowClan for Darktail. Later, Cloverfoot asks him if he remembers when they, along with Sparrowtail and Berryheart, slept away from each other during their stay in the Twoleg den, noting that she misses it. Before Slatefur can respond, Tawnypelt spits an insult at Cloverfoot.
When Tawnypelt tries to sneak away with Shadowkit, Tigerstar finds her and stops her. Slatefur comes out of the warriors den, his eyes wide in shock at the deputy. He watches the confrontation between Tigerstar and Tawnypelt before heading back to his nest afterwards.

Trivia[]

Mistakes[]

  • Kate mistakenly believed him to have died of yellowcough,[blog 2] and he was forgotten about in the background while his siblings earned their apprentice names.[blog 1]
  • Despite not being in the patrol back to ShadowClan in Tigerheart's Shadow, he replaces Rippletail in the aforementioned patrol in River of Fire, while Rippletail appears as a kittypet named Buster.[16]
    • When asked about the inconsistency, Kate has revealed that Slatefur is indeed the one who is meant to be on the patrol, and Rippletail appearing in Tigerheart's Shadow was a mistake.[blog 3]
  • He is mistakenly depicted with faint tabby markings.[4]
