[edit] Into the Wild
- Smudge was Fireheart's kittypet friend when he was still in Twolegplace. It is known that he went to see the "cutter", and became lazy like the other cats who have seen the vet. He tries to have Rusty stay with his housefolk when he decides to join ThunderClan, but later respects his decision. He saw Rusty, now Firepaw, when he was venturing into the forest, and they didn't recognize each other at first, but then they did, and they start talking. However, Tigerclaw witnesses this and reports the incident to Bluestar.

[edit] Firestar's Quest
- In Firestar's Quest, he starts have the same dreams as Firestar. He remembers that Firestar, then Rusty, had strange dreams when he left to join the "ruffians" of the forest. He was found by a patrol, and luckily Firestar was nearby. He heard the fight, and stopped them from chasing him off. He later finds out that his Twolegnest is built on the site of the old SkyClan camp. While they are talking at his Twoleg nest, he introduces Firestar to Hattie, who moved into Firestar's old Twoleg nest. He lets Firestar spend the night in his yard, hoping to find some answers.He is soon relieved that he didn't have to live in the forest.

He is not seen, but he is mentioned by Cody, when Cody meets Leafpaw, and asks her about clan life, and talks about how Smudge lived with Firestar, when his name was Rusty.
