"And what if I don't want the kits? [...] [Stemleaf's] not here, is he? We were supposed to raise kits together, safe in ThunderClan. But we can't do that now! Stemleaf is dead and ThunderClan doesn't feel safe anymore. What if the kits only remind me of the life I should have had with Stemleaf?"
— Spotfur to Bristlefrost about her kits in Darkness Within, page 172

Spotfur is a gray-and-white[9] spotted tabby she-cat[1] with blue eyes.[10]

Spotfur is a ThunderClan queen who has served under Bramblestar's, the impostor's, Lionblaze's, Graystripe's, and Squirrelstar's leaderships in the lake territories. She was born to Cinderheart and Lionblaze as Spotkit, along with her siblings, Snapkit and Flykit, and had three older siblings; Fernsong, Hollytuft and Sorrelstripe. She became an apprentice as Spotpaw and was mentored by Leafshade. Afterward, she earned her warrior name of Spotfur. She organized a secret meeting of rebel cats against the impostor's leadership. However, her mate, Stemleaf, was killed in a skirmish, and Spotfur used his death to advocate for action against the impostor. She joined ShadowClan as a refugee, but returned to ThunderClan under Squirrelflight's leadership. While on a journey to find the Sisters, Spotfur learned she was expecting Stemleaf's kits, and later gave birth to Bristlekit, Stemkit, and Graykit.

A Vision of Shadows[]

Spotkit and her littermates, Snapkit and Flykit, are part of Lionblaze and Cinderheart's second litter. She often plays with the kits of her older brother, Fernsong, and becomes good playmates with Bristlekit, Flipkit, and Thriftkit, as well as Blossomfall's litter. She later becomes an apprentice with her littermates, her own mentor being Leafshade.

The Broken Code[]

"I'm sick of all the arguing! I don't want Stemleaf to have died for nothing! [...] Some cat is going to pay for what has happened. And I want that cat to be whoever is inside Bramblestar."
―Spotfur at the rebels' meeting, grieving for Stemleaf Veil of Shadows, page 211
She is now a warrior named Spotfur. Stemleaf desires to be her mate, to which Bristlefrost, who has a crush on him, feels jealous over, but she comes to respect Spotfur as a loyal and dedicated warrior. She becomes concerned with the way Bramblestar's personality changed after his revival and is adamant on outing codebreakers. While on a patrol with her father and Bristlefrost, she and Lionblaze cross the WindClan border on accident. Bristlefrost informs Bramblestar who forces no cat to speak to Spotfur for a whole quarter moon and banishes Lionblaze for the same duration. Spotfur attends a secret meeting between the Clans and learns that her leader is an impostor, and the real Bramblestar is a ghost.
She joins the rebel group and goes on an assassination attempt on the impostor's life with several other cats, but only she and Kitescratch survive after the attempt fails. She then permanently joins the rebel group, knowing she cannot return to ThunderClan; however, she rejoins ThunderClan after Squirrelflight takes over as acting leader. She grieves heavily for Stemleaf, who died in a skirmish shortly before the battle for ShadowClan. She goes on the journey to find the Sisters with Rootspring, Bristlefrost, and Needleclaw, and learns from Leaf that she is pregnant with Stemleaf's kits. Although at first horrified she'll be raising her kits alone and questions whether or not to keep them, Bristlefrost promises to help raise them, and Spotfur finds her peace. Later, Spotfur asks Rootspring to try and locate Stemleaf, but the attempt is unsuccessful.

«What kind of good Clanmate attacks her leader? He's not my leader. This is the way a loyal warrior saves her Clan.»
—Spotfur before the impostor's assassination Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 9
In Spotfur's Rebellion, Spotpaw is brave and a tad rebellious, and wishes to be the best apprentice in her Clan. After foolishly attempting to sneak up on Bumblestripe, Lionblaze and Cinderheart insist a good Clanmate is loyal and honorable to her Clan, and Spotpaw is determined to do just that. Spotpaw befriends Stempaw, an older apprentice, and they develop feelings for each other. As warriors, Spotfur and Stemleaf convince Bramblestar not to send apprentices out alone during a harsh leaf-bare, and Spotfur and Stemleaf eventually become mates. However, Spotfur is suspicious of Bramblestar following his revival after he begins punishing those who break the warrior code. She and Stemleaf organize the rebels from cats from all the Clans, and decide to lead an assassination attempt against the impostor. The failed attempt results in Stemleaf's death, but Spotfur is determined to do whatever it takes for the future of her Clan, even if her own future with Stemleaf is nonexistent.

Relationships[]

Stemleaf[]

"If Stemleaf had lived in a different Clan, I'd have loved him anyway."
―Spotfur expressing her love for Stemleaf Darkness Within, page 205
Spotpaw befriends Stempaw as apprentices, and always admires him and wants him to like her.[5] Stempaw admires Spotpaw's rebelliousness and bravery,[5][11] and Spotpaw imagines them becoming mates one day.[11] As warriors, Spotfur and Stemleaf frequently spend time together, and he supports her decision to convince Bramblestar to not let apprentices venture out of camp on their own during a harsh leaf-bare.[12] When Spotfur notices that Bristlefrost was acting awkward around her, Stemleaf admits that the younger warrior had feelings for him. However, Stemleaf admits he always had affection towards Spotfur, and she happily reciprocates those feelings.[13][14] When Bramblestar falls ill, Stemleaf asks to be Spotfur's mate, and she accepts.[14]
When Bramblestar begins to act odd after his revival, Stemleaf shares Spotfur's feelings that something is wrong, and both cats organize the rebels, a group of Clan cats wishing to do something about Bramblestar.[15][16] Their movement expands to include all five Clans, including prominent cats like Squirrelflight and Tigerstar.[16] After the other rebels decide to wait until killing the impostor, Spotfur and Stemleaf decide to make a plan of their own. The pair comfort each other the night before their attempts to kill the impostor, and both are determined to do what is best for their Clan, including killing their leader.[16] However, Stemleaf dies in the failed assassination attempt,[10] and Spotfur greatly mourns his death. Their envisioned future together with kits of their own falters, but Spotfur is determined to do whatever it takes for the future of the entire Clan, knowing that this is what Stemleaf would have wanted.[17] Spotfur has stated that she would've loved Stemleaf even if he wasn't in ThunderClan.[18] To Spotfur's surprise, she's expecting Stemleaf's kits, but wonders how she'll raise them without Stemleaf.[19] At the vigil for all the cats who had died since Ashfur's reign, she had asked Rootspring if he could make Stemleaf appear, as well as Bristlefrost, even though she as well as him both knew he couldn't make him appear. Rootspring tells her he's in StarClan and that he knows about their kits and he'll be watching over them as well as her until she and her kits join him.[20]

Bristlefrost[]

Spotfur first talks with Bristlefrost when the former is an apprentice and the latter a kit. Bristlekit sees Spotpaw cleaning Bramblestar's nest, and remarks that she would be helpful as an apprentice, just like Spotpaw. This makes Spotpaw feel warm and happy.[21] After learning that Bristlefrost had feelings for Stemleaf, Spotfur feels pity for her, but is quickly distracted by her affection for Stemleaf.[14] On a border patrol, Spotfur catches a rabbit over the WindClan border. Bristlefrost notices this and informs Bramblestar, though she digs her claws into the ground anxiously as the leader gives Spotfur her punishment.[15] Spotfur notes that Bristlefrost had been telling Bramblestar of her Clanmates' mistakes, though Spotfur doesn't harbor hate towards Bristlefrost, as she was only trying to be a loyal warrior in a way Spotfur disapproved of.[22] Later, Bristlefrost interrupts the meeting, telling the group that she wanted to join them. Spotfur gets mad at Bristlefrost for eavesdropping on her conversation with Stemleaf as that had been how the ThunderClan warrior found out about the meeting. Spotfur notes that although Bristlefrost seemed genuine about it, she had indirectly caused Spotfur to be punished. As the meeting continues, Bristlefrost helps the group form a plan on how to expose Bramblestar revolving around Squirrelflight, gaining Spotfur's trust.[16] The rebels launch an attack on Bramblestar, who is unfortunately accompanined by Bristlefrost. Bristlefrost betrays Spotfur and the cats attacking, gathering other ThunderClan cats to defend Bramblestar's body. Squirrelflight tells Spotfur that Bristlefrost was just fulfilling her promise to protect Bramblestar's body, easing Spotfur.[10]
Later, Spotfur is on a journey with Bristlefrost to find the Sisters in the hopes of bringing them back to the Clans.[23] The end of the day draws near, so Bristlefrost and Spotfur go off on one last hope to find them before the day ends. Bristlefrost tries to distract Spotfur from her grief, but Spotfur rejects, wanting to focus on finding the kittypets.[24] At the beginning of the journey, Spotfur looks like she would much rather be curled up in her nest, discouraging Bristlefrost and her attempts to cheer up her friend.[25] Spotfur learns that she is expecting kits, prompting Bristlefrost to try to keep the queen's spirits up.[8] After learning this, the queen spends some time to think on it, excluding herself from hunting with the patrol often.[26] Spotfur is almost killed by a hawk, leaving Bristlefrost to remind her of her kits. Spotfur tells Bristlefrost that she doesn't want to raise the kits without Stemleaf, so Bristlefrost states that ThunderClan and herself will protect the kits and Spotfur.[27] At the vigil for the cats who died during Ashfur's reign, Bristlefrost's family as well as her ask Rootspring if he can make both of them appear, even though they both know that he can't make them appear. After Rootspring tells both of them that he can't make either of them appear, Spotfur tells him that they both lost so much, as they both lost Stemleaf as well as Bristlefrost, and she then walks away sadly.[20]

Quotes[]

"They're right that we'd need to right if another cat like Darktail came to the lake. But we'd be ready. We wouldn't get fooled by an evil rogue like ShadowClan did. I wouldn't."
―Foreshadowing by Spotpaw Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 1

"Maybe we shouldn't be touching the Moonpool. I wouldn't want to upset any cat...dead or alive."
―Spotfur about breaking the ice on the Moonpool Lost Stars, page 190

"I mean that Squirrelflight once lied to every cat, pretending her sister's kits—her sister the medicine cat's kits—were hers. She lied on purpose and she lied for moons. If you can overlook that, then you can overlook us crossing a border without realizing."
―Spotfur to Bramblestar's impostor The Silent Thaw, page 114

"Why should we believe you really want to help? You could be spying for Bramblestar."
―Spotfur to Bristlefrost The Silent Thaw, page 238

"Trouble has already been stirred up! Do you want to stand by while this impostor banishes some poor cat forever, or tries to send more of his Clanmates to their deaths?"
―Spotfur rallying the others to stand up against the impostor The Silent Thaw, page 239

"You can't know why she did it. Would Bristlefrost value Bramblestar's life over Stemleaf's, and the other rebels'? I doubt it, not if she's loyal to us. And don't forget, if Bristlefrost is loyal to Bramblestar, she knows all our secrets. We have to assume from now on that Bramblestar knows we're working against him. That's our own safe option, to make sure we're not... surprised, by anything he does."
―Spotfur about Bristlefrost and the impostor Veil of Shadows, page 209

"Thank StarClan you've made a decision. Like Berrynose is the most important cat in the forest! In case you've forgotten, we lost strong allies in that fight; Stemleaf, Conefoot, and Dappletuft are all dead."
―Spotfur snapping at Tigerstar Veil of Shadows, page 210

Bristlefrost: "It's not like you to take unnecessary risks. [...] I know you're brave, but you're not foolish. And now you're carrying kits, shouldn't you be more careful, not less?"
Spotfur: "And what if I don't want the kits?"
Bristlefrost: "Don't want them? But they're Stemleaf's."
Spotfur: "He's not here, is he? We were supposed to raise kits together, safe in ThunderClan. But we can't do that now! Stemleaf is dead and ThunderClan doesn't feel safe anymore. What if the kits only remind me of the life I should have had with Stemleaf?"
Bristlefrost: "Try to focus on the life you will have, not the on you should have had. The kits are lucky to have had a father as brave as Stemleaf, who was willing to die to save his Clan. Everything will be okay. The kits will mean that you'll always have a connection to Stemleaf. He can watch over them from StarClan."
Spotfur: "StarClan is gone!"
Bristlefrost: "We're going to get them back. In the meantime, your Clan will help you raise your kits, and I promise I will do anything to protect them. They won't go hungry or face any danger until they're old enough to take care of themselves. We'll keep them safe."
—Bristlefrost and Spotfur about her kits Darkness Within, pages 171-173

"We call on our ancestors to bring your kits a good and long life. Your kits are very special."
―Snow to Spotfur during the Sisters' ceremony to welcome new life Darkness Within, page 198
