[]

  • Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw have had their apprentice ceremonies, and eagerly await their mentors so they can explore the forest.
    • Squirrelpaw is apprenticed to Dustpelt, and Leafpaw has Cinderpelt as her mentor.
    • Squirrelpaw wonders what her warrior name would be, and likes the idea of Squirreldash or Squirrelflame. Leafpaw tells her to calm down, and that she only just became an apprentice.
  • Dustpelt chats with Firestar and Cinderpelt chats with Sandstorm after the ceremony, and soon, Dustpelt and Cinderpelt chat with each other.
  • Firestar and Sandstorm approach Leafpaw and Squirrelpaw, proud of their children for finally becoming apprentices.
  • Squirrelpaw worries that Firestar will name her Squirreltail when she finishes her training, and Firestar assures her that she needs to finish her training first.
    • Leafpaw says that Squirrelpaw's training is easier, because she does not have to remember the names and purposes of every herb.
  • Firestar and Sandstorm assure their daughters that each of them has their own path to follow, and Leafpaw vows to never let anything drive her apart from Squirrelpaw.

[]

  • Squirrelflight is on a border patrol, joined by Eaglewing, Plumstone, and Bumblestripe.
    • Eaglewing warns her Clanmates to be on guard, and Squirrelflight knows that the younger cat is thinking of Ambermoon, her former mentor, who was taken and carried off by an owl the previous moon.
  • Squirrelflight sees a dark shape up on the top of the moor, followed closely by another one, and wonders if it could possibly be a WindClan patrol.
    • Bumblestripe believes it could be, and Squirrelflight suggests checking the WindClan border.
    • The patrol makes their way to the riverbank with Eaglewing checking the border.
  • Squirrelflight reminds the patrol of the new borders, and asks the cats if they have marked it.
    • Plumstone says that Thornclaw told her that it did not matter, since ThunderClan cats do not hunt on moorland.
    • Squirrelflight is shocked, reminding herself to speak to Bramblestar later about the senior warriors.
  • They reach the new border, remarking that it smells a lot of WindClan, and Squirrelflight says that the land used to belong to them until recently.
    • Squirrelflight marks the border, and Eaglewing wonders why WindClan hasn't marked their new borders recently.
    • Squirrelflight reminds Eaglewing that Whitetail had recently died, and they were probably having her vigil and mourning the loss of their Clanmate.
  • Harestar calls a meeting with the other Clan leaders and deputies.
  • Bramblestar and Squirrelflight reflect on their past, and recall the trouble they used to get into. Squirrelflight brings up when they used to sneak out and their Clanmates likely turned a blind eye.
  • Squirrelflight brings up the possibility of the two of them taking some time for themselves and to have fun. She is enthusiastic and likes the idea of having more kits with Bramblestar.
    • Bramblestar is more worried about his Clan, saying that they need to get right home after the meeting. Squirrelflight is saddened, but knows that Bramblestar is a good leader who always puts his Clan first.
  • Harestar reveals why he has called a meeting— he has problems with SkyClan's borders. Squirrelflight sees Mistystar and Tigerstar not responding, and wonders if Harestar had already discussed this with them.
    • Mistystar and Tigerstar both agree, each leader saying that their Clans also have territory that they cannot use and that other Clans would benefit from.
  • Leafstar is very angry, saying that SkyClan needs the land to support their growing Clan. Harestar tries to assure Leafstar that he does not want SkyClan to leave, but he only wants what is best for every Clan.
  • Squirrelflight suggests using the territory near the abandoned Twolegplace, saying that when there were four Clans, no Clan had needed it, so they did not lay claim to it.
    • Leafstar is unhappy, saying that she feels her Clan is being pushed aside and is not actually part of the Clans.
    • Bramblestar also does not like the idea, and is angry with Squirrelflight for not siding with him.
  • Squirrelflight and Bramblestar argue on the way home, bringing up the idea of kits again. Bramblestar is very unhappy with this, wondering if Squirrelflight is unhappy with being deputy and the children she already has.
  • Squirrelflight worries that Bramblestar will outlive her, and have kits with another she-cat once she dies. The argument badly upsets Squirrelflight, who decides to spend the night in the warriors' den instead of next to Bramblestar.

[]

  • Brackenfur mews to Squirrelflight that the elders' den needs fixing, and Squirrelflight promises to send Thriftpaw and Dewnose to fix the den as soon as they return from training.
    • Graystripe meows to his mate, Millie, that the warriors are going to patch up den. Millie, whose hearing is getting very bad, mishears Graystripe and asks if Squirrelflight is patching up her relationship with another cat.
    • Squirrelflight worries that Graystripe and the elders know about Squirrelflight's argument with Bramblestar. She wonders if Bramblestar thinks she is a bad deputy for publicly opposing him.
  • Squirrelflight tries to calm herself, thinking that Bramblestar would obviously want more children, just not as badly as she does.
  • Thriftpaw returns with Dewnose, having caught a very nice rabbit. The apprentice notices a weasel on the fresh-kill pile when she goes to put her rabbit there.
    • Mousewhisker, who caught the weasel earlier in the day, was being seen by Leafpool for his injuries, because the weasel did not go down without a fight. Squirrelflight decides to check in on Mousewhisker, and visits Leafpool's den. She finds out that Mousewhisker also does not consider ThunderClan's new territory theirs and agrees with Thornclaw and the others.
  • Squirrelflight asks Mousewhisker if he has patrolled by the old Twolegplace any time recently, and if he scented anything dangerous. Mousewhisker mews that there are occasionally unfamiliar scents, but the animals have not strayed onto Clan territory.
  • Leafpool and Squirrelflight talk about the argument with Bramblestar, and that he does not want kits as much as he does. Leafpool is empathetic and understands her sister's worry, and eases her sister's concern about her being selfish.
  • Squirrelflight talks with Leafpool about the meeting and learns that StarClan has been silent and has not communicated with any cat for a while. Leafpool is not sure if they just don't have anything to share with the Clans, or if something else is going on.
  • Leafpool reassures Squirrelflight that Bramblestar will want kits, and that she should let things happen naturally. She advises her sister to not try and solve everything at once, and take everything one step at a time.
  • Squirrelflight appreciates Leafpool's kindness, but mentally notes that she can't understand her longing for more or feelings of not being needed. She thanks her sister and leaves the den.
  • Squirrelflight thinks about last night's meeting, and determined to prove to Bramblestar that she is right, she decides to speak to Leafstar.

[]

  • Squirrelflight makes her way to the SkyClan border and waits for a patrol to accompany her, not wanting to start arguments.
    • She meets Tree and Palesky, and Palesky is teaching Tree the basics of a border patrol.
    • Palesky explains to Squirrelflight that although she knows Squirrelflight means no harm, she has to explain to Tree the rules so he understands them.
  • Squirrelflight, Palesky, and Tree make their way to SkyClan's camp, where Squirrelflight meets with Leafstar and SkyClan's deputy, Hawkwing.
  • Hawkwing and Leafstar are not too welcoming to Squirrelflight, who apologizes for speaking out of turn at the meeting that Harestar called.
  • Squirrelflight tries to convince Leafstar that her idea is for the benefit of every Clan, and that Leafstar should go with her to explore the territory, although Leafstar calls Squirrelflight out on going behind Bramblestar's back.
  • Leafstar and Squirrelflight decide to go check out the territory, and run into Sparkpelt and Larksong out hunting, and Squirrelflight hopes that word won't get back to Bramblestar what she is doing. Squirrelflight asks Sparkpelt to keep where she is going a secret, and that she will be back in a day.
  • Squirrelflight and Leafstar reach an encampment that appears to be abandoned, but they soon discover that the opposite is the case, and the two she-cats find themselves surrounded by very large cats, who are not happy to see them there.

[]

  • Squirrelflight and Leafstar meet Moonlight, the leader of the Sisters, a group of large she-cats.
  • Moonlight wants to know why Squirrelflight and Leafstar are in their territory, and why they were talking about making a camp there.
    • Leafstar says that they only came to see if the territory was empty, but vows to leave knowing that the Sisters are living there.
  • Moonlight explains that the Sisters do not mark their territory like the Clan cats do, and is fairly hostile towards Leafstar and Squirrelflight throughout the exchange.
  • Moonlight says that they will leave the territory once her kits are able to travel, having not given birth yet.
    • Leafstar asks if the Sisters will return to the territory, and Moonlight admits that the territory is good to birth kits, but says that if it is occupied when they return, they will go elsewhere instead.
  • Leafstar likes the territory, and says that once the Sisters leave, she will send patrols to scout the area in further detail to see if it is suitable for SkyClan to live there.
    • Leafstar does not want to tell the other leaders yet, because she has to discuss it with her Clanmates.
  • Squirrelflight and Leafstar attempt to leave and return to their respective Clans, but they are stopped by Moonlight, who is concerned that the other Clan cats might not respect the promises that Squirrelflight and Leafstar have made.
    • Moonlight says that the cats will be treated like campmates, when Squirrelflight agrees to stay willingly, and asks Tempest, another Sister, to bring Leafstar and Squirrelflight some prey to eat.
  • Squirrelflight and Leafstar share prey with the Sisters, and meet the other members of the group.
    • Squirrelflight thinks it is odd that there are not any older toms.
  • Leafstar tries to escape from the Sisters while Squirrelflight takes a nap, and is injured by Snow in the process.
  • Squirrelflight and Leafstar come to the conclusion that the Sisters are not going to let them leave easily, and that they are captives. Squirrelflight worries what kind of reception awaits her in ThunderClan on the chance that she is able to get away.

[]

  • Squirrelflight watches Tempest, Stone, and Grass build another den, and Leafstar mews that if they would let them leave, the Sisters would not have to waste time building.
  • Squirrelflight notices that many of the Sisters are skilled in herb usage, and Flurry explains that all of the Sisters know how to use herbs, which is how she was able to treat Leafstar.
  • Squirrelflight and Leafstar explain the purpose of a medicine cat and their apprentice to Flurry, who is shocked there are so few cats who can heal.
  • Flurry explains that Tempest and the other Sisters are now building Moonlight's den, so she can give birth in it, and that her kits will be here in about a moon.
  • Moonlight approaches Squirrelflight and Leafstar, asking how the SkyClan leader is, and if the two she-cats have eaten yet.
    • Squirrelflight says they have, but expresses distaste in being treated like a Clan elder, and she explains to Moonlight what elders are and what purpose they serve.
    • Squirrelflight offers to help around the camp, which Moonlight is thankful for, after she is shot down while trying to escape.
  • Squirrelflight notices that Tempest appears sad, and asks Moonlight if she misses her mate when she sees Stone and Grass.
    • Moonlight says that she does not know, and explains that the Sisters live their lives without toms, but they are always given the choice to live with their mates instead of the group. Tempest chose to raise her children among the Sisters.
  • Moonlight says that Grass and Stone will be leaving the Sisters that night, and invites Squirrelflight to partake in bidding Tempest's children good-bye.
  • Squirrelflight asks about Moonlight's former mate, and she explains that while she misses Jack, she knew that her place was with the Sisters.
    • Moonlight says that when her kits are old enough, she will take them to meet Jack and offer her children the chance to get to know their father.
  • Squirrelflight talks with Leafstar, and the SkyClan leader advises her to not become too useful to the Sisters, fearful that the group of she-cats may not let them leave.
  • Furze approaches Squirrelflight and Leafstar, and tells Squirrelflight that she is to go with Moonlight, while Leafstar is to stay behind due to her injury.
  • Moonlight, Squirrelflight, and the other Sisters make their way to the top of the hill, where the group of cats bid farewell to Grass and Stone.
  • Squirrelflight thinks to herself that she could never give up the toms in her life, and says that she will consider asking Moonlight tomorrow if her and Leafstar are able to leave.
  • Squirrelflight is worried that she will not be able to keep her promise to Moonlight, about making sure the Sisters will be able to live and leave in peace without the Clans interfering.

[]

  • Squirrelflight awakens to find herself smelling the scents of Bramblestar, Sparkpelt, and ThunderClan. She also notices that Hawkwing, Tree, and Plumwillow from SkyClan have also joined the rescue patrol, and she soon scents even more of her Clanmates.
  • Squirrelflight tries to stop a fight, saying that the Sisters have not harmed her or Leafstar.
  • Moonlight confronts Bramblestar, who demands the Sisters release Leafstar and Squirrelflight.
  • Squirrelflight explains that she and Leafstar have stayed there willingly, and that the Sisters are fearful that the Clans will overtake their territory.
  • Bramblestar notices that Moonlight is expecting kits, and apologizes for not noticing sooner.
  • Tree pushes his way to the front of the crowd, and Squirrelflight notices that he is very angry and questions why.
    • He is recognized by Moonlight, and Squirrelflight discovers that Tree is Moonlight's son from an earlier litter. He is also recognized by Sunrise, who is overjoyed to see Tree again.
  • Tree is not happy to see the Sisters, and calls Moonlight out on sending him away when he was still very young and not ready to be on his own.
  • Bramblestar is angry that Moonlight is holding Squirrelflight and Leafstar, and promises to fight to get them back.
    • Moonlight decides that bloodshed is not worth it, and allows Squirrelflight and Leafstar to leave the Sisters.
  • As soon as they leave the Sisters' camp, Squirrelflight and Bramblestar argue about why Squirrelflight left, and the ThunderClan leader is furious with his deputy for going behind his back.
  • Bramblestar admits that he was worried about Squirrelflight, but also says that he should have never made Sparkpelt keep a secret from Bramblestar or ThunderClan.
  • Squirrelflight apologizes, having not known that the Sisters would have kept her and Leafstar hostage.
  • Bramblestar is still furious with Squirrelflight, and wonders if she really wanted to leave the group to begin with.
    • Squirrelflight is shocked with Bramblestar's attitude, saying that she would have come home. Bramblestar is angry, saying that he should have been able to trust her.
  • Squirrelflight is upset, and thinks to herself that Bramblestar is not going to forgive her any time soon.

[]

  • Flippaw welcomes Squirrelflight back to ThunderClan and asks about the Sisters.
  • Flippaw worries that one of the Clans will have to move, but he is reassured by Squirrelflight and his mentor, Hollytuft, that this is not the case.
  • Hollytuft sends Flippaw away, and apologizes to Squirrelflight for the young apprentice's gossiping.
  • Squirrelflight and Bramblestar argue again, this time over who Squirrelflight has or hasn't chosen for the dawn patrol.
    • Bramblestar reprimands Squirrelflight, saying that she should decide who is going the night before, instead of picking from the cats already awake in the morning.
    • Squirrelflight objects to this, saying that she has never done it this way and that it shouldn't be a problem.
  • Their argument is interrupted by Sparkpelt, who says that she needs to speak to both of them.
    • Sparkpelt reveals that she is expecting kits, and both of her parents are thrilled for her, but Bramblestar is sympathetic for Squirrelflight, knowing she also wanted more kits.
  • Bramblestar apologizes to Squirrelflight after Sparkpelt leaves, saying that he knows that must have been rough to hear.
    • Squirrelflight is angry, saying that she knows he doesn't want more kits, and walks off to go visit Leafpool.
  • Leafpool reassures Squirrelflight that she is not being selfish, and that she deserves to be happy too.
  • Leafpool and Squirrelflight discuss the Sisters, and how they would have never made Leafpool pick between medicine and having kits.
    • Leafpool says she was never forced to pick, and did what she thought was the best thing for her family, and that she and Squirrelflight raised Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, and Jayfeather together.
  • Leafpool wonders if StarClan will approve of SkyClan taking the Sisters' territory once they leave, and says that StarClan has been silent lately.
  • Leafpool says that until StarClan speaks, it is best for every Clan to not make any choices.
  • Squirrelflight wonders if StarClan really knows what will happen, thinking to herself that it is pointless to guess the future when you cannot see it.

Chapter 8
[]

  • Larksong, Blossomfall, Mousewhisker, Sparkpelt, and Squirrelflight go on a hunting patrol.
  • Larksong smells something strange, and wonders if it could be rogues, but Squirrelflight instantly recognizes the scent as a cat belonging to the Sisters.
  • Snow emerges from the ferns, and many of the ThunderClan cats on the patrol are hostile towards her, but Larksong says that they should take a look and see if they can help without bothering the rest of ThunderClan.
  • Squirrelflight's patrol follows Snow, and they meet Tempest, Hawk, and Sunrise. Sunrise is leaning on Hawk, and looks to be in serious pain.
  • Squirrelflight tells Snow, Tempest, and Hawk to leave, and that they will take Sunrise to ThunderClan's camp, but Snow and the others refuse, not wanting to leave Sunrise by herself.
  • Sparkpelt worries that Bramblestar will not like what Squirrelflight is doing, but Mousewhisker points out that Sunrise needs help, and Larksong and Mousewhisker help carry Sunrise back to camp.
  • Snow reveals that Sunrise was hurt fighting ShadowClan, after the Sisters had found Clan scent on their territory and followed it back to the pine forest, where they were attacked.
  • They arrive back and camp, and Alderheart, Jayfeather, and Leafpool emerge from the medicine cat den, with Jayfeather asking what rogues are doing in camp.
  • Bramblestar stops the medicine cats from helping Sunrise, much to the shock of Squirrelflight, Leafpool, Twigbranch, and Mousewhisker.
  • Thornclaw and many of the senior warriors tell Bramblestar to send the Sisters away, and ThunderClan is divided on whether or not they believe the Sisters should be helped.
  • Bramblestar orders Jayfeather to take Alderheart to the Moonpool, to speak with StarClan about healing Sunrise.
  • Squirrelflight is shocked that Bramblestar would allow Sunrise to be in pain for that long, but Bramblestar orders Leafpool to keep Sunrise alive until Jayfeather and Alderheart return.
  • Squirrelflight is not sure that she would be able to forgive Bramblestar or ThunderClan if they let Sunrise die by not letting any cat treat her.

[]

  • Leafpool tries to heal Sunrise, but Bramblestar is insistent on not allowing her to use her herb storage to the fullest extent, saying he needs to wait to hear from StarClan.
  • Leafpool objects, saying that Sunrise may not make it, and that she needs to treat her wounds before they become infected, although Bramblestar thinks that Sunrise will be fine.
  • Although Bramblestar refuses to allow his cats to move Sunrise, he listens to Finleap's suggestion and allows them to make a nest around Sunrise to make her comfortable.
  • Bramblestar sends out a hunting patrol, saying that while he refuses to let the Sisters hunt on ThunderClan territory, he will allow them to eat their prey.
  • Bramblestar summons Squirrelflight to his den, wanting to speak to her about why she brought Sunrise and the Sisters to camp.
    • Sparkpelt offers to join Squirrelflight and refuses to take no for an answer.
  • Bramblestar and Squirrelflight argue over whether or not Squirrelflight should have brought the Sisters to camp, with Bramblestar worried what Tigerstar would say if he found out.
  • Sparkpelt tries to talk to Bramblestar, but is interrupted by a sudden pain, and worries that her kits are in danger.
    • Squirrelflight assures her that she is suffering from cramps, and Sparkpelt says that this happens when she gets worried.
  • Squirrelflight promises not to argue with Bramblestar any further, seeing that this is upsetting Sparkpelt.
  • Squirrelflight tells Sparkpelt stories of when she was pregnant with her and Alderheart, saying that she would run to Jayfeather a lot, and that he would get mad that Squirrelflight didn't know that she was giving birth.
  • Squirrelflight looks over at Bramblestar, seeing that his gaze was soft and full of love, and she takes this chance to ask Bramblestar again about treating Sunrise.
    • Bramblestar's gaze instantly hardens, and he is firm in his choice to wait to hear from StarClan.
  • Snow is angry that Leafpool won't treat Sunrise, and is more disgusted that she can't do so because a tom says so.
  • Leafpool tries to explain that Bramblestar is their leader, and they have to listen to him, but Thornclaw intervenes, telling Snow that she needs to be quiet.
  • Alderheart and Jayfeather return, and Jayfeather says that he saw Hollyleaf, who delivered another prophecy.
  • Bramblestar believes that the prophecy means they should not be treating Sunrise, but Leafpool and Squirrelflight object to this, saying that Bramblestar does not know what StarClan meant.
  • Bramblestar is angry that Squirrelflight is not supporting him, but she stands up for herself, saying that to be deputy means that she needs to speak up for what is right.
  • Bramblestar concedes, telling Leafpool to take Sunrise to the medicine cat den.
  • The elders are moved to the nursery, to allow the Sisters to sleep in the elders' den, while Berrynose and Bumblestripe stand guard.
  • Bramblestar tells Squirrelflight that she is responsible for there being so much division in ThunderClan, which hurts Squirrelflight that her mate would say that.

[]

  • ThunderClan cats are walking to the Gathering.
    • Cats ask if they are going to tell the other Clans about the Sisters, and how they treated Sunrise.
  • The patrol arrives at the island.
  • The Gathering begins, and Tigerstar immediately cuts to the chase and brings up the Sisters presence at the border, and how a group of them attacked a ShadowClan patrol and severely injured Strikestone.
  • The Clan cats listening react in hostility, and several hostile yowls emerge from the gathered cats.
  • After the discussion, the Clans summon Tree, but the mediator is reluctant to persuade the Sisters to leave Clan territory due to how Moonlight forced him out when he was a kit.
    • Leafstar then disagrees with the other leaders on fighting the Sisters and insists SkyClan be left out of the issue.
    • The Gathering comes to a close after Tigerstar concludes that they wait for StarClan's word, and at this the cats disperse.
    • During the trip back, Bramblestar and Squirrelflight debate on what actions to take, and what Tigerstar would do if he found out ThunderClan was sheltering the Sisters, so Bramblestar ends by saying that the Sisters will leave ThunderClan's territory that very night.

[]

  • Squirrelflight and Alderheart discuss Sunrise's condition and when to make the Sisters leave their camp.
  • Bramblestar orders that Bumblestripe and Squirrelflight go and send word to the Sisters that Sunrise has to leave.
  • Squirrelflight arrives back to camp and wakes Snow, giving her the news.
    • The Sisters ask if Sunrise is well enough to travel, and sparks a minor argument with them, but ends it quickly, before Leafpool gives the Sisters a bundle of herbs for emergency and sends them on their way.
    • Squirrelflight goes with them, and they arrive at the Sister's temporary camp, where Sunrise settles down and Moonlight and Squirrelflight start chatting about the affairs of their stay.
  • Squirrelflight tells them Bramblestar needs to hear from StarClan before doing anything preposterous, and warns the group of being driven out by the Clan cats.

[]

  • Squirrelflight is on patrol with Ivypool, Twigbranch, and Finleap, and she tells Ivypool to stay back and let Twigbranch and Finleap take control of the hunting.
  • Squirrelflight has offered to go on every patrol since the Sisters left camp, trying to keep herself distracted and busy.
  • Squirrelflight suggests hunting on the moorland, but Ivypool objects, saying ThunderClan will be giving the land away soon.
    • Squirrelflight says that they will only give the land away if SkyClan agrees to move, and they have to wait for the Sisters to move.
  • Ivypool reminds Squirrelflight of Tigerstar's plan to drive the Sisters away, but Squirrelflight believes that Tigerstar had promised to wait to hear from StarClan first.
  • The patrol finds a rabbit and chase it, but find themselves face-to-face with Breezepelt, a WindClan cat.
    • Breezepelt is joined by Hootwhisker, Nightcloud, and Sedgewhisker, and the WindClan cats are adamant that ThunderClan is wasting what used to be WindClan's hunting grounds.
  • Squirrelflight takes her cats back to ThunderClan, not wanting to argue with WindClan, and she and Bramblestar soon set out to speak to Harestar.
    • Bramblestar wants to come to an agreement with Harestar, and his warriors are concerned that he will willingly give the land up.
    • Bramblestar assures his Clan that he is not giving up any territory, and that he is only going to talk.
  • Bramblestar apologizes to Squirrelflight for arguing with her on the WindClan territory topic, and says that they need to work things out fairly.
  • Squirrelflight and Bramblestar discuss SkyClan, and Bramblestar believes that SkyClan should move to the new territory as soon as Leafstar is ready.
  • Bramblestar spots Slightfoot, and tells the younger cat that he wishes to speak to Harestar, and they make their way to WindClan's camp.
  • Bramblestar and Harestar discuss the land, and Harestar is adamant that ThunderClan does not need the territory, and does not confirm nor deny sending Breezepelt to hunt there.
  • Bramblestar, Harestar, and their respective Clans agree to temporarily share the hunting grounds so both Clans can benefit, but their leaders express that this treaty needs to remain secret.
  • Squirrelflight is worried that if Tigerstar finds out, it could start a war with the Clans as he is eager to force the Sisters to move.

[]

  • Tigerstar, Mistystar, and some RiverClan and ShadowClan warriors have approached ThunderClan's camp, having found out about WindClan and ThunderClan's agreement.
  • Mistystar has demanded that Tigerstar return the marshland that originally belonged to them.
  • Tigerstar reminds Mistystar that ShadowClan gave half of their land to SkyClan, and that ThunderClan did the same.
  • Tigerstar demands that the other Clans help them drive out the Sisters so SkyClan can move to the Sisters' territory.
  • Bramblestar refuses, and says that his borders are his problem, and advises RiverClan and ShadowClan to solve their problems on their own.
  • Squirrelflight is worried that RiverClan and ShadowClan will turn on SkyClan and try and take their land, and start a war.
    • Bramblestar wishes he could assure Squirrelflight this will not happen, but he cannot and does not have the words to help.
  • Daisy interrupts Squirrelflight and Bramblestar, and brings good news: Sparkpelt felt her kits move and wanted to share her joy with her parents.
  • Squirrelflight heads to the nursery to see Sparkpelt, and Squirrelflight is overjoyed when she touches Sparkpelt's stomach and feels the kits kicking.
  • Larksong, Sparkpelt's mate, soon joins them, but he looks tired and Squirrelflight is worried about him.
  • Larksong promises Squirrelflight and Sparkpelt that he will be the best father he can be, and Squirrelflight knows that he will be.
  • Larksong mentions that he was coming to lie down next to Sparkpelt, saying that he has been tired all morning.
    • As he goes to move, he suddenly stops and collapses on the ground, not breathing.
  • Squirrelflight orders Sparkpelt to stay with him while she fetches Alderheart.
  • Alderheart says that Larksong's heart is still beating, but they need to get him breathing again, and orders Bramblestar, who had poked his head inside the den to see what was going on, to fetch Leafpool.
  • Sparkpelt is worried, praying that Alderheart and Leafpool can heal Larksong.
  • Larksong has a spasm, and Alderheart checks his breathing, and confirms that he is breathing again.
  • Sparkpelt slumps against Squirrelflight, worried, but slips to the ground and stares at Larksong, still very worried for her mate.

[]

  • After collapsing, Larksong has been moved to the medicine den.
  • Squirrelflight is worried, and asks Leafpool how Sparkpelt and the kits are doing, not wanting Sparkpelt to get too stressed.
  • Jayfeather, Leafpool, and Alderheart aren't too sure what is going on with Larksong, nor what sickness he has.
  • Bramblestar orders Hollytuft to check the prey, and Finleap worries that the prey could be rotten.
    • Thornclaw says the prey was just caught earlier on in the day, but Twigbranch mews that the prey could have been sick.
  • Hollytuft returns and says that the prey smells fresh and healthy, but Bramblestar orders Squirrelflight, Hollytuft, Bristlepaw, and Flippaw to help clear out the prey anyways, just in case.
  • Squirrelflight shows Bristlepaw and Flippaw how to carefully carry the prey away, making sure to be careful so no other cat gets sick.
  • Squirrelflight thinks of the Sisters, and says they aren't too different from the Clans, and how they raise their young together.
  • Hollytuft offers to take Bristlepaw and Flippaw hunting to restock the freshkill pile.
  • Squirrelflight checks in on Larksong, who is still unconscious, but stable enough to where Sparkpelt can return to the nursery to get rest.
  • Sparkpelt panics and worries that ShadowClan have poisoned their freshkill, like they did with SkyClan and Sparrowpelt, and worries that ShadowClan is out for revenge for bringing the Sisters to the Clans and ThunderClan's deal with WindClan.
  • Squirrelflight says that Larksong is not ill because of Bramblestar's dealings, but Sparkpelt is stricken with grief and does not believe her.
  • Bramblestar overhears Sparkpelt's yowling, and comes to see what the issue is.
  • Sparkpelt says that Larksong would have been fine if Bramblestar wouldn't have made Tigerstar so angry, lashing out at Squirrelflight in the process.
    • Bramblestar tries to assure Sparkpelt that Tigerstar did not do this, and is angry that his own kin is turning against him, and Bramblestar reprimands Sparkpelt for yelling at Squirrelflight.
  • After Bramblestar leaves the nursery, Sparkpelt apologizes to Squirrelflight, and Squirrelflight encourages Sparkpelt to rest.
  • Squirrelflight returns to the medicine den to check on Larksong, but finds that Leafpool still does not know what is wrong with Larksong.
  • Leafpool is certain that Larksong was not poisoned by ShadowClan or by deathberries in general, but the medicine cat does wish to speak to ShadowClan, to see if they know of anything that may help Larksong.

[]

  • Squirrelflight is insistent on going to ShadowClan with Jayfeather and Alderheart to speak to Puddleshine.
  • Cinderheart and Lionblaze are concerned that ShadowClan had poisoned Larksong, and Poppyfrost, Cherryfall, and Molewhisker agree with them.
  • Bramblestar shuts down the discussion, saying they have no proof of ShadowClan's involvement.
  • Squirrelflight again tells Jayfeather that she wants to go with the medicine cats to ShadowClan, but Jayfeather is dead-set on Squirrelflight getting permission first, not wanting to send the wrong sign to ShadowClan.
  • They find Bramblestar, and he gives his permission for Squirrelflight to go to ShadowClan to see the reactions of the other Clan herself, thinking it's a good idea.
  • The patrol meets Snowbird, Snaketooth, and Cinnamontail, and they ask to speak to Tigerstar, whom they learn is out hunting, but Squirrelflight says that they can also speak to Cloverfoot.
  • Snowbird guides the ThunderClan cats into ShadowClan's camp, and instructs them to only go to Puddleshine's den and nowhere else.
  • Puddleshine greets Alderheart and Jayfeather, and Squirrelflight asks to speak to Cloverfoot.
  • Squirrelflight tells Cloverfoot that Larksong has an illness, but they aren't sure where it came from, and warns Cloverfoot to be careful of prey.
  • Tigerstar returns and gets angry at Squirrelflight for the fact there are injured ShadowClan cats, due to RiverClan trying to take back their border with ShadowClan.
  • Squirrelflight tells Tigerstar that the Sisters will be gone in a moon, and that Leafstar will have made her choice by then.
  • Tigerstar is angry with Squirrelflight, and orders her and the medicine cats to leave ShadowClan's camp, not wanting to talk about any more agreements.
    • Squirrelflight, Alderheart, and Jayfeather are escorted back to the border by Dovewing and Scorchfur.
  • Dovewing defends Tigerstar, saying he has a valid point, and that ThunderClan always thinks that their way is the best way.
    • Squirrelflight is shocked at Dovewing's words, as she used to be a ThunderClan cat herself.
  • Dovewing says that protecting your Clan is sometimes more important than being right, and withdraws from the argument, heading to the back of the patrol of cats.
  • Squirrelflight is worried, thinking to herself that the borders between the Clans must stay the same until the Sisters leave.

[]

  • Squirrelflight, Jayfeather, and Alderheart discuss ShadowClan, each of them believing that ShadowClan did not know anything about Larksong's sickness.
  • Squirrelflight catches a mouse, asking Alderheart and Jayfeather if they could see if the prey was sick just from looking at it.
    • They are unable to determine if the prey is what made Larksong sick, and this bothers Squirrelflight.
  • Squirrelflight sits down, suddenly exhausted and tired.
    • Jayfeather, worried, says that she smells fine, but asks if Squirrelflight is expecting kits, noting her symptoms.
  • Squirrelflight is not expecting kits, and Jayfeather and Alderheart determine that she is just exhausted and needs to rest and eat something when they get back to camp.
  • They return to camp, only to find that Sparkpelt has fallen ill with the same sickness that Larksong has.
  • Jayfeather says that they are going to check every cat in the Clan for this illness that shows no regular signs of illness, and any cat who is tired or can't breathe properly needs to report to the medicine den.
  • Squirrelflight wants to see Sparkpelt, but is stopped by Leafpool, who is concerned that Squirrelflight might catch the sickness affecting Sparkpelt and Larksong.
  • Larksong has not woken yet, but Leafpool has been giving him herbs and was able to get a little water in his body.
  • Thornclaw believes that the Sisters could have possibly brought this illness to the Clans.
  • Squirrelflight offers to go see them, and Bramblestar agrees that this is the best course of action.
    • Squirrelflight is joined by Ivypool, Twigbranch, and Finleap, and Twigbranch suggests taking Leafpool along as well.
  • Squirrelflight is determined to find out what is making Sparkpelt, Larksong, and her Clanmates sick.

Chapter 17
[]

  • Squirrelflight travels to visit the Sisters again, and Moonlight invites her and her Clanmates into the camp.
  • Leafpool asks about Sunrise, and wants to check in on her.
  • Moonlight asks why Squirrelflight brought so many cats, and Squirrelflight replies that it is because Bramblestar wanted her to take a patrol.
    • Moonlight asks why Squirrelflight is trying to please Bramblestar, and Squirrelflight replies that because Bramblestar is her leader and her mate.
  • Leafpool returns, saying that Sunrise has healed well and asks Moonlight if they found the herbs they needed, and the gray she-cat mews that they did.
  • Squirrelflight says that there is sickness in ThunderClan's camp, and wonders if any of the Sisters are sick, to which Moonlight says that there are no sick campmates.
  • Moonlight asks Leafpool what the symptoms of this illness are, and mentions that she was surprised that ThunderClan let the meadow saffron grow in their territory, explaining that it is harmful to cats, especially if prey has eaten it.
  • Leafpool asks for a cure, and Moonlight reveals that dandelion root will cure the poison, but they need to be swift about it.
  • Squirrelflight thanks Moonlight for the information, and Moonlight mews that she is glad to help as the ThunderClan patrol leaves, hoping to make it back in time to save Sparkpelt and Larksong.
  • Jayfeather asks if the Sisters are sick, and Squirrelflight says no, and that Moonlight and the others knew what was wrong with Larksong and that they found a cure.
  • Leafpool, Alderheart, and Jayfeather decide to try and treat Larksong first.
    • As they attempt to treat him, Larksong suffers a spasm, and Sparkpelt is sent into early labor over her shock and worry for her mate.
  • Sparkpelt gives birth to a she-cat and two toms.
  • Larksong has enough energy to purr at the newborn she-cat, and gazes up at Sparkpelt, his eyes full of love.
    • His eyes soon grow lifeless, and he passes away, upsetting Sparkpelt greatly.
  • Squirrelflight finds out that one of the kits, a black-and-orange tom, has also died, and Squirrelflight says that they will plan a vigil after Sparkpelt's remaining kits are taken somewhere safe.
  • Squirrelflight and Bramblestar take the two remaining kits to Sorrelstripe to try and get them milk, as Sparkpelt is too grief-stricken to take care of them.

Chapter 18
[]

  • Squirrelflight returns from a border patrol with Leafshade, Honeyfur, and Fernsong, needing a way to distract herself over her grief for Larksong and Sparkpelt.
  • Fernsong asks if Sparkpelt will be well enough to sit vigil for Larksong and their young orange-and-black kit, who had both died earlier on in the day.
  • Squirrelflight isn't sure, but Honeyfur and Leafshade offer to sit vigil for Larksong, saying that Larksong is with Snowbush now.
  • Squirrelflight goes to check on Sparkpelt, and worries that she is sleeping too much.
    • Leafpool calmly reminds Squirrelflight that Sparkpelt has been unwell, and that she gave birth earlier in the morning.
  • Leafpool says that Sparkpelt did not react to learning about the death of one of her kits.
  • Squirrelflight worries that Sparkpelt won't be able to bond with her other children, due to her grief and illness, but Leafpool tries to convince Squirrelflight otherwise, reminding her that it takes a lot more than what Sparkpelt is going through.
  • Squirrelflight decides to visit her new grandchildren, and Leafpool asks her to return when she is done.
  • Squirrelflight finds her grandkits with Daisy, and the elder queen explains that she is keeping an eye on them while Sorrelstripe rests, because feeding her own kits and Sparkpelt's has taken a lot out of her.
  • Daisy and Squirrelflight both agree the kits need names, but Squirrelflight says that Sparkpelt should be the one to name them.
  • Squirrelflight emerges from the nursery in time for the vigil, and sees Sparkpelt outside.
    • Bramblestar says to let Sparkpelt mourn for Larksong, and there will be time for bonding later.
  • Twigbranch, Lilyheart, Finleap, and the other cats present all sit vigil for Larksong and the young tom who had not gotten to live.
  • After the vigil, Berrynose, Plumstone, and Mousewhisker are arguing with Lionblaze and Squirrelflight over the Sisters and whether or not they are responsible for Larksong's death and the trouble the Clans are facing.
  • Bramblestar suggests another patrol to visit the Sisters, to learn what meadow saffron looks like, so it can be eliminated from ThunderClan's territory.
  • Before she leaves, Squirrelflight visits Sparkpelt again, and she worries about the condition that her daughter is in.
  • Sparkpelt reluctantly decides to try and feed her newborn kits, and Leafpool tells her that she can return to the medicine den when she is done, and that Daisy will watch the kits.
  • Squirrelflight, Leafpool, Blossomfall, and Cherryfall all go to visit the Sisters, and they offer to perform a ceremony upon learning of the passing of Larksong and Sparkpelt's young kit.
  • Moonlight and the others perform their ceremony, although Blossomfall thinks that it is nonsense, but she is hushed by Leafpool, who is watching with curiosity.
  • After the ceremony, Moonlight says that they saw the young black-and-orange kit, and he was encouraged to walk among ThunderClan, where his spirit can be loved.
  • Snow asks who the black tom was that was with the kit, and Blossomfall says that it was Larksong, with Squirrelflight explaining further that Larksong was the father of the kit who had died.
  • Leafpool asks the Sisters why they yowl during the ceremony, and Moonlight explains it is to ward off evil spirits.
  • Squirrelflight wonders if the Sisters have a special connection with StarClan.

Chapter 19
[]

  • Leafpool joins a hunting patrol with Finleap, Squirrelflight, Twigbranch, and Honeyfur.
  • Leafpool and Squirrelflight share a mouse, with Leafpool saying that she does not have to follow the code due to her being a medicine cat.
  • Squirrelflight says that she visited Sparkpelt, and Leafpool thinks this is a good thing, since she needs company.
  • Twigbranch, Honeyfur, and Finleap reappear, each of them having caught prey, and they resume their hunting patrol.
  • Later, Squirrelflight attends a Gathering, and notices that only SkyClan is calm.
  • Leafstar worries about what is going on, and Bramblestar assures her that she should not move before SkyClan nor Moonlight are ready.
  • Tigerstar suggests driving the Sisters from their camp, and Scorchfur agrees with him, along with many other Clan cats.
  • Leafstar is uncertain, but expresses that she does not want to drive the Sisters away from land that is theirs.
  • Bramblestar says that ThunderClan will not join in driving out the Sisters and says that they need to respect Leafstar's wishes to wait.
  • Harestar, Mistystar, and Tigerstar do not agree with this, and appear to want to drive them out immediately.
  • Leafstar suggests peace with the Sisters, and looks to Tree for advice, and he agrees about wanting peace with the Sisters, not war.
  • Leafstar says that she, Tree, and Squirrelflight will go talk to the Sisters and see what can be done, although Squirrelflight is going to wait for Bramblestar's decision before leaving.
  • Bramblestar ignores Squirrelflight, and stalks out of the clearing without saying a word to her, leaving Squirrelflight behind to watch him pad away.

Chapter 20
[]

  • Squirrelflight, Tree, and Leafstar leave to talk to the Sisters.
  • Tree is concerned about talking to the Sisters, and worked with Hawkwing on talking to them.
  • Tree tells Squirrelflight and Leafstar to venture forward, as he is taking time to practice.
  • Squirrelflight is worried, because they are coming to warn the Sisters there will be war with the Clans if they do not move, and Leafstar hopes it will give them enough time to prepare and leave.
  • Snow appears, and asks Squirrelflight why they are here, and stiffens when she notices Tree standing behind her and the SkyClan leader.
  • Snow is angry about letting a full-grown tom into their camp, and Squirrelflight says they are kin.
    • Tree does not respond positively to this, saying that the Sisters do not care about male kin.
  • Tree apologizes for being angry, and says that he must speak with Moonlight and that she will want to hear his message.
  • Tempest, upon seeing Leafstar and Squirrelflight, offers their prey to them, and Hawk asks Leafstar how she is healing from her leg injury.
  • Snow returns, and says that Moonlight will see Squirrelflight and Leafstar, and looks on with disdain when she reveals that Moonlight will also talk to Tree.
  • Squirrelflight is worried that Moonlight's kits are late.
  • Moonlight sees Tree, and greets him with the name she gave him when he was born, Earth.
  • Tree rejects this name, saying that his name is Tree, not Earth, and Moonlight accepts this change and welcomes him nevertheless.
  • Leafstar urges Moonlight to leave the territory, explaining the the Clans are fighting more and more over territory, and that it is no longer safe for the Sisters to stay where they are.
  • Moonlight is angry that the Sisters are trying to be forced out, and Tree says that they are there to talk, not threaten.
  • Moonlight snorts, and says that the Clans would try and harm innocent kits to get their territory.
  • Squirrelflight begs Moonlight to listen, but she does not, and says that the Sisters will fight if the Clan cats come to attack them.
  • Squirrelflight is distraught and worries that she may have to prove her loyalty to ThunderClan by being forced to attack a pregnant she-cat.

Chapter 21
[]

  • The Clan leaders have an emergency meeting, where they discuss what Leafstar, Squirrelflight, and Tree had talked about with the Sisters.
    • Mistystar considers them refusing to move and instead fight an insult to the Clans.
  • Squirrelflight again insists that the Clans wait before taking the territory, expressing that Moonlight is pregnant and they will be gone within a moon.
    • Harestar wonders if the Sisters will ever actually move, and Tigerstar mocks Squirrelflight.
  • Bramblestar says it is not a matter of honor, but he fears they will have to drive the Sisters from their land.
  • Tigerstar, Harestar, and Bramblestar all are in agreement about driving the Sisters away, but Bramblestar glances at Squirrelflight and insists that the peace of the Clans is at stake.
  • Squirrelflight is shocked that any cat would harm unborn kits, and Mistystar says that a rogue could have their kits anywhere.
  • Leafstar says that she believes Moonlight is being unreasonable, which upsets Squirrelflight, but the SkyClan leader does not believe they need to drive the Sisters out, and instead suggests sending a large patrol to show the strength of the Clans.
  • Squirrelflight is still against this, saying that Moonlight would feel attacked and lash out.
  • Leafstar says that she will not send a patrol of her cats, but she also will not stand in the way of Bramblestar and the other leaders.
  • Bramblestar is surprised, but Leafstar says that she will not risk a war on unborn kits.
  • The meeting ends, with each leader agreeing to send a patrol.
  • Bramblestar expects Squirrelflight's support, and she refuses yet again to risk a battle due to Moonlight's condition, and the pair of cats argue again, with Bramblestar doubting Squirrelflight's loyalty to her Clan, and to him.
  • Bramblestar's mew softens, and says that Squirrelflight is the cat he cares about the most, and it worries him that he can't seem to do anything right and that Squirrelflight thinks he is constantly wrong.
  • Squirrelflight again presses the fact that he wants to attack a queen, and Bramblestar says that he is not going to attack her, only send a patrol.
  • Bramblestar and Squirrelflight give up arguing soon after, with Bramblestar saying that he has to obey StarClan.
  • Squirrelflight says that while she does not agree, she does still love Bramblestar.
  • The two cats make their way to Bramblestar's den, where they try and get some rest, but Squirrelflight's dreams are tormented with the sounds of screeching cats and blood.
  • Squirrelflight worries this may be a sign that Moonlight's kits are in danger, and her fears are echoed by Leafpool, when the ginger she-cat goes to visit her sister in the medicine den.
  • The two sisters sneak out of ThunderClan's camp, worried that their dreams are a sign that Moonlight is in trouble.

Chapter 22
[]

  • Leafpool and Squirrelflight arrive to find that Moonlight is kitting, and Leafpool urges Snow to let her see Moonlight, whose screeches could be heard outside of the camp.
  • Squirrelflight assures Snow that Leafpool knows what she is doing, and that she has helped deliver many kits, including Squirrelflight's own children.
  • Snow explains that Moonlight has been kitting for a long time, and that she has only had one so far, and frets that the kits may be too big.
  • Leafpool sends Hawk and Snow to look for herbs to help Moonlight, and sends Squirrelflight to help them, expressing her fear that Moonlight may tire herself out if this continues.
  • They return with herbs, and Moonlight is defiant on having them, but Snow convinces her that the herbs will help and encourages her to eat them.
  • Hawk returns, and Squirrelflight warns her and the others that the Clans are coming and likely on their way now.
  • After some struggling, Moonlight's second kit finally arrives, although it is not breathing at first.
  • Snow watches Moonlight, while Leafpool tends to the kit, and Squirrelflight is shocked at Leafpool's method of helping the newborn kit.
  • Leafpool takes her claw, opens the kit's mouth, and pumps the kit's chest with her paws.
  • Squirrelflight, Hawk, and Snow are all shocked, and with Leafpool's methods, the little she-cat lets out a wail.
  • Leafpool turns her attention back to Moonlight, who is in the process of giving birth to a third kit.
  • Leafpool is thrilled and happy that Moonlight has finally given birth, and all three kits survive the ordeal, and Moonlight does as well.
  • Leafpool expresses concern for Moonlight, who is very tired after her struggle.
  • Squirrelflight purrs happily, and suddenly stops when she sees Snow stiffen.
  • Looking out into the cleaning, Squirrelflight sees that Bramblestar and the rest of the Clans' patrol has arrived.

[]

  • Squirrelflight advises Leafpool to stay hidden, not wanting the Clans to know that she was also involved in the plan to go see Moonlight.
  • Tigerstar, Harestar, and the other leaders demand to see Moonlight, but are confronted by Furze, who accuses them of trespassing.
  • Moonlight comes to her senses, and wants to know why Clan cats are here, and Squirrelflight mews that they have to get her and the kits out safely.
  • Squirrelflight tells Snow that she and the other Sisters need to get Moonlight out, while the ginger she-cat distracts her Clanmates to try and prevent them from fighting.
  • Tempest, Snow, and the others will fight to save Moonlight, but Squirrelflight insists that they get Moonlight and the kits somewhere safe first, and then they can focus on fighting the Clan cats.
  • Squirrelflight reveals herself to the Clan cats, and they are shocked and outraged that Squirrelflight would betray them.
  • Squirrelflight says that she is not betraying anyone, and she came to help Moonlight.
  • Tigerstar faces Bramblestar, and asks the ThunderClan leader if he likes being wrong, and the rest of the cats present accuse Squirrelflight of being disloyal, with Breezepelt bringing up when Squirrelflight had raised Jayfeather, Hollyleaf, and Lionblaze.
  • Bramblestar hisses at Breezepelt, saying that this had nothing to do with the Sisters, and that is what they came to solve.
  • After being antagonized, Sunrise leaps at Harestar, saying that Sisters do not back down, and this causes all of the cats present to jump into battle with one another.
  • The Sisters fight the Clan cats for a while, and Squirrelflight is able to sneak around to get most of ThunderClan to stop fighting and assist the Sisters.
  • As the Sisters slink away from the fight with little injuries, Bramblestar wants to know why Squirrelflight betrayed them, to which Squirrelflight says that she and Leafpool had a dream and were worried about Moonlight's kitting.
  • Bramblestar demands to know where Moonlight is, and Squirrelflight says they are in a cave.
    • Crowfeather hears this and is worried for Leafpool, remembering the incident that happened with Feathertail many seasons ago that took her life.
  • Flurry reappears and ambushes Bramblestar, but their tussle is soon interrupted by Twigbranch, who says that Tigerstar and the others have Moonlight, the Sisters, and the newborn kits trapped in the cave.
  • Bramblestar, Squirrelflight, and the others make their way to the cave that Moonlight is trapped in, and they comment on the state of it and say it is no place for kits to be.
  • Bramblestar tells Tigerstar that they cannot endanger the kits like this, and Tigerstar is shocked, saying that no cat told him they had been born.
  • Before Tigerstar can respond, Moonlight rallies her fellow Sisters to attack, and the cave erupts into another battle.
  • Squirrelflight hears a loud noise, immediately realizes that there is a landslide, and calls for Leafpool to try and rescue the kits, who are still inside the cave.
  • They manage to find and rescue the kits, but Leafpool and Squirrelflight are sent into darkness by the rocks from the landslide.

Chapter 24
[]

  • Squirrelflight and Leafpool awaken in StarClan, although Squirrelflight denies this at first, saying that she and Leafpool still have too much to do.
  • Squirrelflight looks up and sees Larksong padding towards her, and says that the rockslide did not kill her or Leafpool.
    • Alderheart and Jayfeather are trying to save Squirrelflight's and Leafpool's bodies back in ThunderClan.
  • Larksong says that StarClan is unsure if the pair of sisters can be saved, but they are allowing them to stay in StarClan for the time being.
  • Leafpool wants to see her body and what happened, and Squirrelflight wants to see Bramblestar.
  • Larksong says that they can try, but sometimes the view is clouded and they can't see much.
  • Larksong takes Leafpool and Squirrelflight to a pool, and says that he comes here to watch over Sparkpelt, noting that he misses her.
  • Soon, Squirrelflight, Larksong, and Leafpool are joined by other StarClan cats, and Squirrelflight is overjoyed to see Firestar and Hollyleaf again.
  • Sorreltail mews that Firestar had said that Squirrelflight and Leafpool might not be with them for long.
  • Ferncloud approaches Squirrelflight, and brings two kits with her.
    • Squirrelflight recognizes them as Dandelionkit and Juniperkit, the siblings of Alderheart and Sparkpelt, and her heart cracks as she remembers how they had died.
  • Mousefur and Longtail soon join them, and Squirrelflight is happy to see them again and learns that the pair of elders had been teaching Dandelionkit and Juniperkit how to hunt.
  • Squirrelflight sees Ashfur in StarClan, and is bothered by him being there, but Hollyleaf says that she thinks he has changed.
  • Firestar tells Squirrelflight and Leafpool that the pair of sisters may not be able to stay in StarClan, due to their actions while they were alive.
  • Firestar takes Squirrelflight and Leafpool to a grassy clearing, where they will stand trial for the things they did while they were alive.
  • They are soon joined by Tallstar, Bluestar, Yellowfang, Crookedstar, Littlecloud, and an ancient Clan cat, Moth Flight.
  • Firestar says that he would not turn Squirrelflight and Leafpool away, so these cats were sent to decide what happens to them.
  • Moth Flight begins with Leafpool, bringing up how she broke the medicine cat code and had a mate and kits.
    • Leafpool does not try and fight the accusations, saying that she simply was in love, and awaits to be accused of taking a cat from another Clan as her mate, which she also does not try and fight.
    • Leafpool mews that being a medicine cat was important to her, and was important enough for her to give up Crowfeather, Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf, and that she chose her Clan before herself in the end.
  • Bluestar asks Leafpool if she would do the same thing again, and the ThunderClan medicine cat mews that she would, as she could not imagine a life without her kits in it.
  • Yellowfang defends Leafpool, saying that she put her Clan first, and that she sacrificed everything for ThunderClan.
    • Littlecloud and Crookedstar say that she still broke the code, but Bluestar sides with Yellowfang, saying that they cannot judge Leafpool for something that she has done herself.
  • Leafpool tells StarClan not to argue, and that she never regretted having her kits, only that she denied being their mother.
  • Squirrelflight's part of the trial begins, and she is confronted by Crookedstar for lying to Bramblestar about Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Hollyleaf, and how she prioritized the Sisters before her Clan.
    • Squirrelflight says that she has only ever wanted to protect every cat, and that includes her sister, Leafpool, and Moonlight's innocent children.
  • StarClan discusses this, and says that they will permit Leafpool and Squirrelflight to stay in StarClan, but note that they will be watching if the pair of sisters survive this ordeal.
  • Firestar invites Squirrelflight and Leafpool to explore StarClan further.

Chapter 25
[]

  • Squirrelflight and Leafpool relax in StarClan, joined by their family and former mentors, Dustpelt and Cinderpelt.
  • They reminisce of their time as apprentices, and Squirrelflight tells Dustpelt that he was a great mentor and had so much to teach her.
  • Ashfur asks Dustpelt if he wants to come hunting, as he is meeting Whitestorm down by the river, and Dustpelt opts to join them.
  • After Ashfur and Dustpelt leave, Squirrelflight asks Hollyleaf if she minds Ashfur being there, given everything that happened.
  • Hollyleaf says that after a while, things that happened in the forest seemed like a long time ago, and that it does not really bother her.
  • Sandstorm joins in, saying that StarClan cats do not fight over things like that, because StarClan cats are never hungry or cold and don't need to fight over territory.
  • Dandelionkit asks Squirrelflight if she wants to play with the kits, and the little kit says Briarlight said it is more fun if everyone joins in, but the dark brown she-cat bounds up to Dandelionkit and denies saying such a thing.
  • Sandstorm explains that Dandelionkit and Juniperkit have tons of other kits to play with, and mentions that the siblings are particularly close to Mosskit, Bluestar and Oakheart's one kit.
  • Cinderpelt says that Bluestar lives with Oakheart, and they are a real family now, and that there are no borders in StarClan.
  • Cinderpelt says that she is going hunting with Yellowfang, and invites Leafpool to join her, which she accepts, and Squirrelflight decides to hang back with Sandstorm and the kits.
  • Hollyleaf approaches Squirrelflight, and offers to show her around StarClan, and they are joined by the kits.
  • Squirrelflight worries, but is assured by Hollyleaf and Sandstorm that there is nothing in StarClan that can hurt them, and her children are safe and can do anything they want to in StarClan.
  • After touring the territory, Hollyleaf watches as Squirrelflight catches a squirrel, and they soon decide to return to their camp, as Firestar will be waking soon.
  • They are soon joined again by Larksong and Flickerkit, and the kit has caught a piece of prey almost half his size, which impresses Squirrelflight.
  • Seeing Larksong and Flickerkit reminds her that she misses Sparkpelt and Bramblestar, and wants to check in on them.
  • Squirrelflight faces Sandstorm, and tells her that she needs to go back to the pool and back to her Clanmates.
  • Sandstorm says that she is not sure Squirrelflight can, but they follow her to the pool, and they are joined by Leafpool and Cinderpelt.
  • Squirrelflight watches the pool as she sees Alderheart, Jayfeather, and Bramblestar in the medicine den, and her heart aches as she sees that Bramblestar's eyes are hollow with grief.
  • Squirrelflight wants Leafpool to go with her, but Leafpool says that she is happy where she is, and she missed Sandstorm, Firestar, and Hollyleaf a lot and she wants to stay with them.
  • Squirrelflight realizes that Leafpool is calm and happy where she is in StarClan.
  • Squirrelflight tells Dandelionkit and Juniperkit that her Clanmates need her, and that she will be back soon, and tries to go back to the Clans, and feels darkness overwhelm her as she fights her way through the depths of the pool.

Chapter 26
[]

  • Squirrelflight finds herself in ThunderClan's camp, and notices many cats working around the came, and decides to check in on Sparkpelt.
  • Sparkpelt looks lifeless, and Squirrelflight tries to encourage her, but notices that Sparkpelt is not even reacting to Squirrelflight's words.
  • Squirrelflight is shocked to se her body and Leafpool's body, and watches Jayfeather and Alderheart try to treat the two sisters.
  • Squirrelflight reflects on what happened with Jayfeather, Hollyleaf, and Lionblaze, and whispers to Jayfeather that she is sorry that he was lied to.
  • Squirrelflight knows that Jayfeather cannot hear him, but prays to StarClan that someway, somehow, he does.
  • Bramblestar enters the medicine den, voice full of grief as he regrets not listening to Squirrelflight about the Sisters.
  • Alderheart tries to reassure Bramblestar, but he is convinced that this is his fault for not respecting and listening to his mate and deputy.
  • Squirrelflight is heartbroken and tries calling out to Bramblestar, letting him know that she will come back to him soon.
  • Squirrelflight, unable to do anything more, leaves ThunderClan's camp and explores the forest, trying to find a way to make contact with ThunderClan and Bramblestar.
  • Squirrelflight sees a squirrel and tries to chase it in front of Alderheart, in an attempt to send him a sign, and is not sure it worked, but has faith in her son.
  • Squirrelflight's vision blurs and she is taken to SkyClan's new camp, where the Sisters had stayed before, and finds Hawkwing trying to set up a camp.
  • Suddenly, a mew sounds behind Squirrelflight, and she is shocked to find a tabby she-cat staring at her, and realizes that this cat is dead.
  • The she-cat introduces herself as Blade, and says that Squirrelflight looks dead, but she protests and says that it is only temporary.
  • Squirrelflight learns from talking with Blade that the Sisters are staying with SkyClan, and she wonders if Tree can see her, and it turns out that he can.
  • Tree and Squirrelflight talk, and she tries to pass on a message to Alderheart, but fades away before she can finish her sentence.

[]

  • Squirrelflight looks around and calls out for Leafpool, but is hit by grief as she realizes that her sister is not with her.
  • Overcome by pain, Squirrelflight awakens again in StarClan, where Leafpool tells Squirrelflight that she will be staying in StarClan.
  • Squirrelflight realizes that she has not died yet and wants to go back to ThunderClan and Bramblestar, and Firestar encourages Squirrelflight to fight.
  • Sandstorm says that she can stay happily in StarClan, but Squirrelflight insists that Lionblaze and Jayfeather need her, and they cannot lose both Squirrelflight and Leafpool at one time.
  • Sandstorm does not want her to suffer, and says that she and Leafpool would be together, but Firestar tells Sandstorm that their daughters must make their own choices.
  • Firestar is proud of Squirrelflight for deciding to go back, and tells her that the Clans should not turn from StarClan.
  • Squirrelflight says that they are not turning away, and that StarClan has been quiet, but Firestar mews that perhaps Squirrelflight and the living cats have not been listening hard enough.
  • Squirrelflight promises to try harder to listen to StarClan, and bids farewell to StarClan, and tells Sandstorm to tell Juniperkit and Dandelionkit that she and Bramblestar will rejoin them soon, as a family
  • As Squirrelflight closes her eyes at the pool, her life flashes before her, and she remembers her time as a kit, an apprentice, and finally when she and Brambleclaw fought over Squirrelflight keeping Leafpool's secret.
  • Leafpool tells Squirrelflight to take are of Jayfeather, Lionblaze, Sparkpelt, and Alderheart, and she and Squirrelflight bid farewell to one another.
  • Squirrelflight says that she will miss her sister, and ThunderClan would never feel the same.

  • Squirrelflight tells Alderheart it feels like she has fallen off a cliff, and says that she only has pain in her leg and her head.
  • Alderheart asks Squirrelflight if she knows where she is and if she knows who is treating her, and Squirrelflight happily says that she does not forget her own kit.
  • Alderheart explains that they moved Leafpool, but Squirrelflight says she already knows she is gone, and that she is okay in StarClan.
  • Alderheart is shocked Squirrelflight already knows, but is glad that she will be okay.
  • Bramblestar crashes through the medicine den and meets Squirrelflight's gaze and is overjoyed to see that she is alive and well.
  • Bramblestar says that Squirrelflight should not be sorry for anything that happened, and that he and her should have never let things get that bad.
  • Bramblestar vows to never let things get that bad between he and Squirrelflight ever again.
  • Lionblaze comes to check on Squirrelflight, and Squirrelflight says that he will miss Leafpool just as much as she does.
  • Squirrelflight asks if Sparkpelt is okay, and Jayfeather says that she is feeding her kits.
  • Bramblestar says that the kits are very well, and he is sure that she will come around.
  • Squirrelflight takes another nap, and awakens before Leafpool's vigil.
  • Many cats say kind things about Leafpool, and even Jayfeather says that she was a good medicine cat and trained him well, and Lionblaze says that he wishes he could have loved Leafpool more.
  • Squirrelflight looks up at the stars and wonders if Leafpool is sending her a message from StarClan.

Chapter 29
[]

  • Squirrelflight goes to visit Flamekit, Finchkit, and Sparkpelt, and the kits are overjoyed to see her.
  • Stormcloud is in the nursery, trying to encourage Sparkpelt to eat, although he is not too successful.
  • Sparkpelt pushes the mouse away, but Stormcloud is still worried, saying that Sparkpelt must be hungry because she did not eat much yesterday.
  • Daisy tells Squirrelflight that Stormcloud has been coming every day to visit Sparkpelt and trying to get her to eat, but Daisy worries that Stormcloud is wasting his time.
  • Squirrelflight tells Sparkpelt that she saw Larksong in StarClan, and tells her that he named their other kit Flickerkit.
  • Sparkpelt looks happier, saying that only she and Larksong knew that Flickerkit was the final name they picked.
  • Squirrelflight encourages Flamekit and Finchkit to play with Sparkpelt, but they are worried that she just wants to sleep.
  • Sparkpelt says not anymore, and she is immediately happier and tries her best to play with her kits, and she is joined by Stormcloud.
  • Sparkpelt says that Finchkit cannot practice hunting on real prey, but offers to take her kits outside of the nursery for the first time.
  • Stormcloud faces Squirrelflight, and asks if things will be okay, and Squirrelflight believes they will, but it will take time.
  • Squirrelflight goes to visit SkyClan to check on Moonlight, and she is greeted by Hawkwing, who tells her that Moonlight has died.
  • Hawkwing reveals that Violetshine is feeding Moonlight's kits, and the Sisters will be leaving after they are weaned.
  • Squirrelflight talks to the Sisters, and learns that Moonlight's ghost is still with them, and will be with them until the kits are old enough.
  • Tempest informs Squirrelflight that they have named the kits Squirrel, Leaf, and Moon.
  • Squirrelflight is honored and wonders if Leafpool knows that the Sisters named a kit after her and her sister.
  • Squirrelflight talks to Tree before leaving SkyClan, and although Tree does not want to see Moonlight's spirit, he is saddened that Squirrel, Leaf, and Moon lost their mother very young.
  • Tree vows to be a supportive father to Rootkit and Needlekit and will always be with them.
  • Squirrelflight is proud of Tree and glad that he is sounding like a real warrior.

  • Squirrelflight and Hawkwing talk about Moonlight's kits, and how they will be ready to travel soon, and Squirrelflight worries that Violetshine will miss them.
  • Hawkwing says that Violetshine will be sad, but also will be glad to see the Sisters leave.
  • Squirrelflight asks if the Sisters have helped SkyClan settle into their new territory, and Hawkwing says that they have shown them where to hunt and find fresh water.
  • Squirrelflight wonders if the Clans will ever admit they were wrong, and Hawkwing says that the matter is best forgotten.
  • Leafstar steps forward to address the Clans, saying that SkyClan has moved to their new territory, and that they are making progress on building their camp and looking for prey.
  • Scorchfur asks if the Sisters have left yet, and Leafstar glares at him, saying the Clans were responsible for Moonlight's death.
  • Strikestone says that it was not murder, and it was a battle, but Leafstar is insistent that the Clans should have waited and the battle was unnecessary.
  • Tigerstar accuses the Sisters of turning Squirrelflight against her Clan, which she denies, saying that she was only worried about Moonlight and her kits.
  • Bramblestar yowls that Squirrelflight would never betray her Clan, and says that what is done is done and they cannot change that.
  • Bramblestar calls for the Clans to remember Leafpool, who was a great medicine cat and helped out all of the Clans.
  • The Clans call out Leafpool's name, with each of the medicine cats joining in.
  • Squirrelflight brings a message from StarClan, that the Clans need to spend more time listening and that sometimes the Clans are not listening to the answers StarClan gives.
  • After the Gathering, Squirrelflight holds back and says that she needs a moment to remember Leafpool, and Bramblestar decides to join her.
  • Bramblestar is glad that he and Squirrelflight are not arguing anymore, and Bramblestar admits that he does not know what he would have done had Squirrelflight died.
  • Squirrelflight says that he could have kept going and lead ThunderClan, as they need him.
  • Bramblestar says that he is only strong because of Squirrelflight, and they make a promise to never argue and talk things out.
  • Squirrelflight and Bramblestar notice the star-speckled sky, and believe that Leafpool is watching over them and that she always will.

  • Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw are new apprentices, and they are taken on their first training session with Dustpelt and Cinderpelt.
  • Squirrelpaw is amazed by the size of the forest, and asks Dustpelt many questions about hunting, and Dustpelt mews that one of the most important lessons is knowing ThunderClan's territory.
  • Cinderpelt agrees, and tells Leafpaw that she needs to learn where all of the herbs are.
  • Brambleclaw bursts through the bushes and runs into the four cats. He teases Leafpaw and Squirrelpaw about being young, which offends Squirrelpaw. Dustpelt tells Brambleclaw not to tease the new trainees.
  • Brambleclaw sarcastically apologizes, and he and Dustpelt talk about their recent border patrol.
    • As Dustpelt walks away to talk to Brambleclaw, Squirrelpaw scents a rabbit and goes chasing after it, with Leafpaw offering to go after her sister.
  • Leafpaw gives chase, and she and Squirrelpaw wind up falling into a river, but they manage to escape safely.
  • The sisters are lost, but Squirrelpaw remembers advice from Dustpelt, and tastes the air.
  • Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw make it safely back to ThunderClan territory, and run into Brambleclaw, Dustpelt, and Cinderpelt, all of whom are worried.
  • Brambleclaw apologizes to Squirrelpaw, but comes up with an excuse to not help her or Leafpaw with their apprentice tasks.
  • Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw are quiet on the way home, and Squirrelpaw thinks that she will never be alone as long as she has Leafpaw with her.
