Chapter description[]

In her nest, Leafpool sits uncomfortably, trying to sleep as she wonders how she'll teach Willowpaw about StarClan. When she finally sleeps, she dreams of the slope where she had previously seen Brambleclaw. Instead of seeing him, Leafpool notices a different cat outlined near the lake. Initially, the tabby thinks it is Spottedleaf, but is pleasantly surprised to see Feathertail instead. The two she-cats greet each other as the silver tabby states that they have a task to do. Feathertail explains that StarClan wants her to help aid the ThunderClan cat in visiting Willowpaw's dreams. Leafpool is shocked, and is interested to learn that StarClan is able to do such a feat. The pair of she-cats begin their trek, racing across the borders as Leafpool remains in awe of the power.
They arrive in RiverClan camp, seeking out Mothwing's den. Within it, Feathertail leads the way as Leafpool spots the small shape of Willowpaw. Feathertail gently wakes the apprentice, who at first is annoyed that she is awoken but, soon realizes she is still dreaming. She greets Leafpool, recognizing her, and is then introduced to Feathertail. The StarClan she-cat notes to Willowpaw, she had journeyed to the sun-drown-place as the younger cat remembers who she is. Both Feathertail and Leafpool tell Willowpaw they have a sign, specifically for her, and show her where the catmint is located near RiverClan territory. The young apprentice is thankful for the information, noting that if she had known about it earlier, she and Mothwing might have been able to save Heavystep. Willowpaw thanks the pair of them, promising to tell Mothwing the following morning. Leafpool and Feathertail leave, and the silver tabby thanks her for her help. She then brings up Spottedleaf and the butterfly sign.
Feathertail asks Leafpool if she understands the meaning behind the sign, and what it has to do with Mothwing. Leafpool states that she had guessed it meant that Hawkfrost had faked the sign for Mudfur to take his sister as his apprentice. She also adds that she is unsure of how to approach Mothwing about it, but Feathertail tells her to say nothing and that StarClan knows how good of a medicine cat Mothwing is and that due to this, she will retain her rank and continuing teaching Willowpaw all she knows. Leafpool, however, points out that Mothwing's lack of belief in their ancestors will hinder Willowpaw's progress. Feathertail interjects and states that is where the ThunderClan cat is to come in and help. She points out that it will be many moons before training her own apprentice, and that to train the RiverClan cat, she might have to travel to their camp occasionally. Leafpool takes on the task, relieved that Mothwing will be allowed to stay as a medicine cat. She asks what will come of Hawkfrost, and Feathertail tells her his fate also lies with StarClan. The pair walk through the forest as Feathertail departs, only after telling Leafpool to trust her to be by her side as changes are coming. Before Leafpool can get an answer, the silver tabby disappears and leaves the medicine cat wondering if StarClan could give her an answer. In the sky above her, she spots three stars that appear brighter than the rest of Silverpelt. Despite not knowing what they mean, she feels safer, knowing her ancestors are watching over her.
Awaking back in camp, she is greeted by Berrykit who is excited to be back in ThunderClan. He tells Leafpool that Cloudtail and Brambleclaw had brought them back. The medicine cat asks how his mother is, and he says she is fine as he and his siblings looked after her on the return trip. Leafpool comments that Daisy must be tired, and promises to bring her something later to keep her strength up. She grabs a couple juniper berries from her den before spotting Daisy and her other kits returning to the nursery. Just before Daisy can enter the den, Brightheart's voice calls after Cinderkit, who had dashed out. Leafpool notes the poor timing for Brightheart to appear, as the ginger-and-white she-cat might have been hoping for Daisy to have left for good, noting a rivalry between the two she-cats. However, Daisy approaches the warrior and the two settle their differences, the queen noting that Brightheart is lucky to have Cloudtail. Leafpool tries to not look as though she had been eavesdropping, and doesn't miss the joyful look in Brigtheart's eye as they pass each other.
After visiting the nursery and tending to Daisy and the kits, Leafpool spots Brigtheart nibbling on a vole while Cloudtail gathers cats for a hunting patrol. The medicine cat beckons the white warrior over to her and suggests he takes Brightheart with him as well. However, Cloudtail shoots her a puzzled look, prompting Leafpool to remind him of his mate, the mother of their daughter, Whitepaw. The tom understands, thanking her for the idea and bounds over to Brightheart. The two warriors happily leave camp, with Thornclaw and Rainwhisker following after them. Squirrelflight appears behind her sister, commenting on her intervention with the couple. Scared by her sister's sudden appearance, Leafpool questions what she means by intervening. The dark ginger cat explains that it is about time someone made Cloudtail realize more about Brightheart. She adds, after scanning the camp clearing that life is good for them all. However, Leafpool notes that while it all did seem peaceful, she cannot shake the foreboding feeling of something dark coming. An unfamiliar voice rings in her ears, echoing the words of the prophecy.
