  • Heatherstar receives her nine lives as leader of WindClan.
  • The first ever medicine cat, Moth Flight, comes to her and warns her that one of her warriors will turn rogue and leave WindClan. Heatherstar is doubtful of this, but also concerned.
    • He will stray, and you must let him, even if you fear he will never return. It is the only way he will discover where he truly belongs.

  • Palebird warns Tallkit to be careful.
  • Hawkheart warns Tallkit about attracting buzzards.
  • Barkkit and Shrewkit run to play at the Hunting Stones.
    • Shrewkit teases Tallkit, calling him "Wormkit" when he cannot play.
  • Sandgorse tries to show his son Tallkit how to dig, but he is reluctant.
    • Tallkit falls into the hole he digs and he ends up running back to his mother, saying that he hates digging.

  • Sandgorse runs after Tallkit and tries to console him.
    • Palebird tells Tallkit's father to leave the kit alone, that he got scared.
  • Tallkit asks where the other queens are.
    • Palebird explains that Mistmouse was hunting because her kits don't need her anymore, and that Brackenwing was getting prey.
      • Brackenwing comes in.
  • Tallkit asks his mother if she misses being underground.
    • Palebird explains she won't be going back to her duties for awhile, especially after Finchkit's death.
      • This Tallkit asks about Finchkit; he is told to be quiet by Brackenwing but continues anyway.
  • Sandgorse comes back and Tallkit decides to go with him again.
    • He tries to teach Tallkit how to move rocks.
    • Tallkit hears Shrewkit and Barkkit playing nearby, but ignores them.
    • Flailfoot comes out from the elder's den and says Tallkit is too young to be moving rocks.
      • Tallkit almost moves the rock, but fails at the last second, causing Shrewkit to call him "Wormkit".
  • Heatherstar calls a Clan meeting
    • Tallkit sees Aspenfall, Cloudrunner, Redclaw, Dawnstripe, Meadowslip, Larksplash, Woollytail, Hickorynose, Lilywhisker, and Whiteberry; he makes note of which ones are tunnelers and moor-runners.
    • Barkkit asks Tallkit if he's watching the meeting; Tallkit says they aren't old enough, but the other kit asks him who would know or care if they watched.
    • Ryekit, Stagkit, and Doekit are apprenticed -- Ryepaw, Stagpaw, and Doepaw.
      • Ryepaw's mentor is Larksplash.
      • Stagpaw's mentor is Cloudrunner.
      • Doepaw's mentor is Aspenfall.
        • All the mentors are moor-runners.
    • Plumclaw comes in and is surprised to learn that none of the new apprentices are going to be tunnelers.
      • Mistmouse and Hareflight admit that they want their kits to be moor-runners, like Hareflight, and that tunneling is dangerous work.
      • Hickorynose complains they need more tunneling apprentices.
        • Sandgorse says at least they'll have Tallkit soon.
          • This makes Tallkit nervous, and Shrewkit calls him "Wormkit" yet again.
    • Heatherstar steps in and tells the tunnelers to respect Mistmouse and Larksplash's wishes.
      • She mentions Leafshine, who died in the same cave-in that crippled Lilywhisker.
      • The tunnelers are still outraged at not getting any new apprentices.
  • Tallkit worries that he'll have to keep the skill of tunneling alive all by himself, but Barkkit reassures him.
    • Tallkit thinks about how he wants to be a moor-runner, not a tunneler.

  • Tallkit and Barkkit are playing a game in the snow.
    • Shrewkit tries to tease Tallkit by calling him "Wormkit".
      • The two kits get into an argument about whether or not tunneling is honorable.
        • Shrewkit insists it is not.
        • Tallkit insists it is.
  • Tallkit storms away angrily, and gets a gorse thorn stuck in his paw.
    • Barkkit pulls it out.
  • Barkkit reveals that he wants to be a medicine cat.
    • Tallkit is impressed by his friend's courage and saddened by not being able to train alongside him.
  • Barkkit goes to ask Heatherstar about being apprenticed to Hawkheart, while Tallkit goes to the elders' den.
  • Flameheart, Whiteberry, and Lilywhisker describe the kinds of skills tunnelers have to Ryepaw and Doepaw.
    • Flameheart goes on to tell a story about the time he chased a rabbit into ShadowClan's territory, then had to block it off.
  • The elders lament about how tunneling is slowly dying off, and how the Clan is letting the tunnels fall into ruin.
    • Tallkit worries about having to carry the skill of tunneling all by himself.
  • The elders and apprentices start to argue about whether tunneling is truly needed.
    • This makes Tallkit question how WindClan has stayed together for so long when the moor-runners and tunnelers disagree so strongly.

  • Sandgorse and a few other tunnelers walk into the camp.
    • Tallkit is happy to see his father.
  • Sandgorse talks about how he and the other tunnelers are making a tunnel that goes directly into the gorge.
    • Tallkit is proud until Sandgorse comments that his son might be apprenticed in time to help dig it.
      • This makes Tallkit dread being a tunneler more than ever before.
  • Sandgorse invites Tallkit to help him get cleaned up.
    • Palebird comes over.
      • Sandgorse asks if she'll be ready to return to her duties when Tallkit is apprenticed, but the she-cat replies she might not.
  • Sandgorse tells Tallkit to cheer his mother up.
    • They go into the nursery.
    • Brackenwing asks where her kits are.
      • Tallkit wonders if she knows about Barkkit's plans to be a medicine cat.
  • Tallkit tries to get milk from Palebird, but she tells him no.
    • He tries again, but she again says no.
    • Palebird tells him he's old enough to eat prey.
      • Brackenwing offers that her kits have been eating prey and that he'll enjoy it.
  • Tallkit leaves the nursery feeling very sad.
  • He goes to the fresh-kill pile and tries meat for the first time, encouraged by Plumclaw.
    • He asks the she-cat what it was like being a tunneling apprentice, and she explained it was great.
  • Barkkit comes and says that he's going to be Hawkheart's apprentice.
  • Barkkit asks Tallkit if the latter wants to play Rabbit.
    • Tallkit says he's not hiding under anymore gorse bushes.
    • Barkkit responds that if he steps on another thorn he would gladly pull it out.

  • Tallkit's apprentice ceremony.
    • His parents are initially proud for him.
  • Plumclaw is sure that Tallkit's mentor will be Woollytail.
  • Heatherstar assigns Dawnstripe as Tallpaw's mentor, not Woollytail.
    • Tallpaw is relieved at not having to go underground.
  • The tunnelers, especially Woollytail, Palebird, and Sandgorse, are all outraged.
    • Sandgorse argues that he decides Tallpaw's future.
    • Heatherstar angrily retorts that she decides Tallpaw's future.
  • The other moor-runners and apprentices chant his name and congratulate him.
  • Tallkit thinks that he wants to be a moor-runner, but not if it makes his parents angry.
  • Hawkheart warns Tallpaw not to lose his way.
  • Shrewpaw tries to tease Tallpaw, but Tallpaw says he is the former's equal.
  • Tallpaw tries to go talk to his father.
    • His father is furious, saying Tallpaw should be a tunneler.
  • Dawnstripe comforts Tallpaw, and takes him out onto the moor.
  • Dawnstripe describes the different kinds of animals that live on the moor, such as lapwings, weasels, and sheep.
  • Dawnstripe points out where ThunderClan and RiverClan live.
  • Tallpaw keeps walking forward, closes his eyes, and sniffs for prey.
    • Dawnstripe yowls "no" at him.

  • Tallpaw nearly falls into the gorge and is terrified.
  • The group hears a dog.
    • Ryepaw comments that it's in RiverClan territory, and therefore not their problem.
    • Larksplash takes Ryepaw to check the border.
  • Dawnstripe points out RiverClan's marshy land, and forests of ThunderClan, Fourtrees, the Great Rock, ShadowClan's territory and the Thunderpath to Tallpaw.
    • Tallpaw is excited about being able to go to Gatherings.
  • Dawnstripe shows him the high moor and Highstones.
  • The mentor and apprentice hear a tunneling patrol below.
    • Dawnstripe explains that Tallpaw will get basic tunneling training.
      • Tallpaw's old worries spark all over again.
  • The two head back to WindClan's camp.
  • Dawnstripe talks about the glory of being a WindClan cat.
  • Tallpaw worries about when Sandgorse said he has a tunneler's tail, and the look of disappointment in his father's eyes.
  • Barkpaw comes to greet Tallpaw.
    • Tallpaw asks his friend if he wants to share a mouse.
    • Tallpaw comments about his sore paws, but his friend tells him it's perfectly normal.
  • Shrewpaw teases Tallpaw again, calling him "Wormpaw".
    • The former insists the latter was supposed to be a tunneler.

  • Dawnstripe wakes her apprentice up
  • Tallpaw wonders where his father is.
  • Shrewpaw teases Tallpaw by calling him "Wormpaw".
    • Tallpaw responds by calling him "Bug-breath".
      • Dawnstripe angrily says that only kits name-call.
    • Tallpaw retorts by saying Shrewpaw started it.
      • Shrewpaw teases Tallpaw again, calling him "Tattlepaw".
  • Dawnstripe explains the younger apprentices will help with the older apprentices' final assessment.
  • Tallpaw greets Hickorynose and Sandgorse, but they coldly ignore him.
    • Tallpaw wonders if all the tunnelers will treat him like that from now on.
  • Tallpaw and Shrewpaw do warm-up laps.
    • Tallpaw goes too fast the first time.
    • He tries again and does much better.
  • Shrewpaw teases him, calling him a tunneler, but Tallpaw doesn't reply.
  • The apprentices and mentors head over to Outlook Rock.
  • Tallpaw and Shrewpaw watch Ryepaw, Doepaw, and Stagpaw do the observation portion of their final assessment.
    • The older apprentices move into the hunting portion.
      • Tallpaw is the "rabbit".
      • Tallpaw asks what will happen if the older 'paws catch him.
      • Cloudrunner explains to make it as hard as possible for them to catch him.
  • Tallpaw is very worried, wondering how he can outrun three trained apprentices.

  • Tallpaw helps out with Doepaw's, Ryepaw's, and Stagpaw's chasing prey portion of their assessment.
    • In the end, Stagpaw "catches" him.
    • Tallpaw did very well in the "chase", and is heaped with praise from the warriors.
  • Shrewpaw asks if he can do some hunting.
    • Hareflight tells the tom he'll be doing battle training.
    • Shrewpaw complains, saying Tallpaw won't know any battle moves.
    • Hareflight says to teach him some.
  • Shrewpaw and Tallpaw do battle training.
    • Shrewpaw unsheathes his claws on "accident".
    • Tallpaw wins, and Shrewpaw is angry, calling him "Wormpaw" again.
  • Back in camp, Barkpaw and Tallpaw share a rabbit.
    • They discuss what they learned.
    • Barkpaw asks if Tallpaw and Shrewpaw are having fun training together, and Shrewpaw responds that it's okay, surprising Tallpaw.
  • Tallpaw sees his mother and wonders when she'll return to her duties.
    • He offers her to come watch him train.
    • Brackenwing tells him to leave her alone.
  • Tallpaw overhears the queens talking about the visitors.
  • Dawnstripe comes over to practice battle moves with Tallpaw.
    • He interrogates her about the greenleaf visitors.
    • Dawnstripe explains that they patrol and hunt for the Clan, and they are like rogues in a way.
      • Tallpaw is puzzled, as he believed all rogues were bad.
      • He wonders if WindClan is breaking the warrior code.

  • Half a moon later
  • Tallpaw is going on his first border patrol.
    • Stagleap and Ryestalk are mentioned with their warrior names.
  • Tallpaw interrogates Larksplash about border patrols.
    • She explains they only chase other animals away if its needed.
  • Tallpaw, Stagleap, and Ryestalk race to the Thunderpath border.
    • Stagleap wins, but Tallpaw was right behind him.
  • The three young cats passed the scent line on accident, and were very close to the Thunderpath.
    • Dawnstripe is furious.
  • The patrol smells a dog by the RiverClan border.
    • Stagleap and Tallpaw goof off a little, and Dawnstripe sternly tells them to focus.
  • Tallpaw and Stagleap briefly discuss the gorge.
  • A few tunnelers come to the surface.
    • Sandgorse mentions there was a cave-in.
  • Tallpaw laments about him and his father growing farther apart.
    • The black-and-white apprentice wishes his father would accept his path as a moor-runner.
  • Sandgorse mentions that the tunnel is almost finished and it is a perfect opportunity for Tallpaw to get basic tunnelers' training.
    • Dawnstripe agrees.
    • Tallpaw half-panics, then wonders if he might like tunneling after all, if he simply sees what it's like.

  • Tallpaw, Sandgorse, and Mistmouse go down into the tunnels
  • Sandgorse shows off some of the skills he has as a tunneler.
  • Tallpaw is impressed.
  • Mistmouse, Sandgorse, and Tallpaw dig the tunnel to meet up with Hickorynose and Woollytail.
    • Sandgorse explains what to do with things like the dirt and stones.
  • The two groups meet in the middle of where the cave-in was.
  • Sandgorse excitedly explains that he hit the clay seam recently, and the tunnel from the high moor to the river will be done very soon.
  • Tallpaw learns a little about the changing of air thickness
    • He realizes he is suffocating a little.
  • The group starts to dig through the clay.
    • Tallpaw notices the sound of the river is louder.
  • The tunnelers and Tallpaw escape from the tunnels.
  • The tunnelers explain that they got to the water too soon, causing the tunnel to flood.
    • The tunnelers are ecstatic, while Tallpaw is absolutely terrified.
  • Sandgorse in particular is excited, and comments to Tallpaw how the young tom will never want to be a moor-runner again.
    • He tells Tallpaw to get cleaned up and rest so he can help continue digging.

  • WindClan is about to leave for a Gathering.
  • The moor-runners and tunnelers argue about the usefulness of the tunnel.
    • Reedfeather comments that the tunnels can be used for more than just wars, which makes Tallpaw suspicious.
  • Tallpaw feels bad about quarreling with his father, then wonders why his father is so obsessed with him being a tunneler; Tallpaw feels like a traitor.
  • Shrewpaw once again insists that Tallpaw was supposed to be a tunneler.
  • Tallpaw remembers earlier in the day when Heatherstar had convinced Hickorynose, who, though very reluctant, agreed to go to the Gathering.
  • Cloudrunner and Hickorynose continue to bicker about the new tunnel.
    • Stagleap comments that Tallpaw helped dig it, making the young black-and-white apprentice feel bad all over again about Sandgorse obsessing over him being a tunneler.
  • The cats head to the Gathering, but not before Shrewpaw bullies Tallpaw again.
  • Ryestalk, Doespring, and Stagleap are all excited for their first Gathering as warriors; Doespring offers to race Tallpaw but he declines, feeling depressed about Sandgorse.
  • Tallpaw explains his troubles to his mentor, who does her best to comfort him.
    • He wonders if he really should be a tunneler.
  • The cats arrive at Fourtrees.
    • Doespring points out the Great Rock.
  • ThunderClan arrives, including Pinestar, Sunfall, and Goosefeather.
  • ShadowClan arrives, including Cedarstar and Stonetooth.
  • Whiteberry greets Littlebird and Mumblefoot.
  • Tallpaw hears Shrewpaw talking to some apprentices from other Clans, including Moonpaw and Blizzardpaw.
    • They start squabbling, and Hawkheart asks Stormtail if ThunderClan can control their apprentices.
  • Doespring and Stagleap go to greet Nettlepaw.
  • RiverClan arrives, including Hailstar.
  • The Clan leaders share news - Cedarstar of ShadowClan shares that three kits were born to Silverflame; Pinestar mentions some trouble with dogs, but it was easily resolved; Hailstar states RiverClan has had more than enough fish.
    • While the Clan leaders were talking, Tallpaw sees Reedfeather with Fallowtail, though the latter is unnamed.
      • He is surprised by how close they seem.
  • Heatherstar announces Tallpaw, the newest apprentice, and the other Clans chant his name.
  • Stagleap goes to greet Shimmerpelt, a she-cat from RiverClan, who he has a crush on.
  • Dawnstripe introduces Tallpaw to some ShadowClan apprentices - Frogpaw, Newtpaw, and Ashpaw.
    • Tallpaw doesn't know what to think of them.
    • Dawnstripe explains it's extremely helpful to know your enemy - such as their scent.
  • The cats head back to WindClan camp.
  • The greenleaf visitors have arrived.

  • The visitors and WindClan cats greet each other.
  • Bess, Algernon, Sparrow, Mole, and Reena are introduced.
  • Wee Hen is mentioned to have died.
  • Tallpaw comments on their weird names.
  • Tallpaw notes that there are other Clan cats who don't like the visitors.
  • The Clan cats and rogues prepare to rest for the night.
    • Tallpaw offers Reena a place in the apprentices' den.
    • She accidentally calls him "Tall".
      • He hopes she doesn't call Shrewpaw "Shrew".
  • Shrewpaw is hostile towards Reena.
    • Reena casually flirts with Tallpaw, and he thinks it might be nice having visitors after all.

  • Reena is doing a training session with Tallpaw.
    • She accidentally calls him "Tall" again.
  • The trio hunts a rabbit; it goes does a hole and Woollytail comes out.
  • Woollytail casually mentions the tunnel flooded while Tallpaw was helping underground.
    • Dawnstripe is alarmed by this.
      • Reena is merely interested, and questions why Tallpaw isn't a tunneler when both his parents are.
    • She says Heatherstar should know about this.
  • Dawnstripe sends Tallpaw to Outlook Rock with Hareflight and Shrewpaw.
    • The apprentices practice observing.
    • Tallpaw observes a buzzard teaching its fledglings to fly, which impresses Hareflight.
  • The cats return to WindClan camp.
    • He sees the leader and deputy, and some of the tunnelers gathered.
  • Tallpaw and Reena share a lapwing and talk about the tunnelers
  • Sandgorse furiously stomps over, and angrily tells Tallpaw that the tunnel to the river has to be blocked off and abandoned, and it's all his son's fault because he was too rabbit-hearted and cowardly to be a tunneler, and got a fright when his paws got wet, and now he ruined the project the tunnelers spent moons on.

  • Tallpaw, feeling very dejected, heads out of camp and towards Outlook Rock, hoping to find peace.
  • Sparrow joins him.
  • Tallpaw opens up and drops his troubles onto Sparrow, who seems to understand him.
    • For the second time, Tallpaw wonders if he should be a tunneler, even though it's not what he wants.
    • Sparrow tells Tallpaw to aim for what he wants, not what his father wants.
  • Tallpaw concludes that he should choose his destiny and Sandgorse can chose his.
  • It is the next morning; Tallpaw is on the dawn patrol.
  • Tallpaw smells a strange scent while going to the first marker; he identifies it as ThunderClan.
    • He runs back to the warriors, leads them to the ThunderClan cats, and yowls to attack.

  • Tallpaw is about to attack Dappletail, Windflight, Fuzzypaw, and Robinpaw, until Dawnstripe hauls him back
  • She explains that they're going to Mothermouth.
  • Tallpaw feels embarrassed.
  • The patrol continues.
    • Stagleap cheers Tallpaw up by racing him and exchanging friendly banter.
  • Tallpaw smells ShadowClan.
    • He doesn't want to make the same mistake, and says nothing.
  • The rest of the patrol - Dawnstripe, Aspenfall, Stagleap and Appledawn - smell ShadowClan.
    • The warriors are furious Tallpaw said nothing, and explain ShadowClan doesn't need to cross WindClan territory to go to the Moonstone.
    • Aspenfall goes to get the hunting patrol.
  • The rest of the border patrol rushes back to camp and joins the battle.
    • Tallpaw sees Reena and Sparrow helping the WindClan cats.
  • Tallpaw recognizes Frogpaw, Ashpaw and Newtpaw.
    • Mole saves him.
  • WindClan wins the battle, ShadowClan is chased out, with Stonetooth vowing to drive them out next time.
  • The only casualty is Brackenwing, and Tallpaw blames himself.

  • Dawnstripe says it isn't his fault.
  • Tallpaw explains to Heatherstar about him smelling the patrol but not telling at first.
  • Shrewpaw attacks Tallpaw, screeching the black-and-white tom killed his mother.
    • Hareflight pulls his apprentice away.
    • Even Barkpaw is cold towards Tallpaw.
    • Reena says it's not Tallpaw's fault, but Bess tells her to stay out of it.
  • Tallpaw still blames himself, thinking even his mother will hate him because it was his fault her friend died.
  • The medicine cats treat wounds and the warriors rebuild.
  • Hawkheart consoles Tallpaw, saying it wasn't his fault.
    • Tallpaw worries that he ruined his friendship with Barkpaw.
  • The tunnelers come into camp for the first time since the battle and are surprised to learn Brackenwing died.
  • Shrewpaw yowls that Tallpaw killed Brackenwing, and Sandgorse is ready to believe this, before Heatherstar says it isn't true.
    • Reedfeather scolds Shrewpaw.
  • The tunnelers and moor runners argue; the moor runners say the tunnelers should've been there to help defend the camp, while the tunnelers insist the gorge tunnel could have been an escape route and hiding place.
  • Tallpaw realizes the Clan is tearing itself apart.

  • Heatherstar breaks up the argument to thank the visitors.
    • The she-cat says they will have to send out smaller hunting patrols.
  • Tallpaw hears Sandgorse and Sparrow talking about the gorge tunnel.
    • Sandgorse cruelly calls his son "one of the apprentices".
  • The next morning, Tallpaw helps with the burial.
  • Tallpaw and Dawnstripe head out for training, but the apprentice hear Sparrow and Sandgorse's plans to go down into the gorse tunnel.
  • Tallpaw questions the place of tunnelers.
    • Dawnpelt doesn't give him a straight answer.
  • Algernon comes and informs the mentor and apprentice that Sandgorse and Sparrow went into the tunnels.
    • Tallpaw feels bad for Sparrow.
  • Tallpaw goes hunting while Dawnstripe and Algernon are chatting.
    • Tallpaw takes note of where the tunnels are, and privately calls them stupid.
  • He hears the earth rumbling, and thinks back to the flood.
  • Sparrow bursts out of a rabbit hole.
    • The rogue says that the tunnel collapsed, but he lost Sandgorse.
  • Tallpaw tries to go help his father, but the tunnel collapses on him.

  • Woollytail pulls the apprentice out.
  • Tallpaw is dazed, but quickly remembers what happened.
    • He interrogates Sparrow about what happened, and to his understanding Sparrow just abandoned Sandgorse.
  • Woollytail comments that Sandgorse got what he was due for being reckless.
  • The cats give the news to Palebird, who is also devastated.
  • The medicine cats treat wounds.
    • Barkpaw says he's sorry about Sandgorse.
    • Tallpaw replies he's sorry about Brackenwing.
      • Barkpaw doesn't reply.
  • For a moment, Tallpaw understands what Palebird is going through.
    • Reena tries to share food with him, but he pushes her away, wanting to be alone.
    • Dawnstripe tries to comfort him, but he pushes her away, too.
    • Tallpaw blames himself for Sandgorse dying.
      • He then blames Sparrow, insisting the rogue abandoned his father in the tunnel.
  • Heatherstar sends a furious Tallpaw to his nest, where the tom goes to sleep and has a nightmare.
    • Barkpaw comes to check on his wounds, but is distant.
  • It is the next morning; the patrols, with the rogues included, are leaving.
  • Tallpaw is about to get up before Hawkheart stops him, saying his paw is infected and he's confined to his nest until it heals.
  • Tallpaw blames Sparrow for killing Sandgorse.

  • Meadowslip is kitting.
  • Reena and Tallpaw argue, leaving Reena angry and Tallpaw even more bitter towards the rogues and the Clan as a whole.
  • Tallpaw finds comfort in Flailfoot, who explains that even tunnelers like the feel of sun on their fur and running across the moor.
    • Tallpaw still thinks Sandgorse hates him, but Flailfoot insists otherwise.
    • The elder talks about how Sandgorse was a great planner, but hated worms.
  • Dawnstripe comes and says Tallpaw is fit to train again.
  • Tallpaw says he wants to be a tunneler.
    • Dawnstripe tries to talk him out of it.
    • Woollytail and Plumclaw are overjoyed.
  • Tallpaw says tunneling is in his blood, he just never realized it before.

    • In the dream, Talltail is inside the gorge tunnel.

    • Suddenly, Talltail is alone in the dark and mud pooling around him, and he hears Sandgorse calling his name.
  • Talltail is awoken by Jake, and is initially annoyed, but then Jake points out a cat scent near a beech trunk.
    • Talltail gives it a sniff, and exclaims that they're on the right trail of the rogues.

  • It is the next day, and Talltail hurriedly rushes to get another sniff of the scents.
    • He is confident this time that it's the rogues, as he smells Sparrow, Reena, and Bess.
  • Talltail asks Jake if the kittypet is going to go home.
    • Jake states he can't leave Talltail to face Jake alone.
  • Talltail and Jake follow the scent trail through the woods.
  • The two toms are attacked by a fox, but manage to ward it off.
  • Talltail gets a scratch and his legs ache, but Jake is able to find dock, and they continue

  • The two travelling toms encounter grass-cutters. Talltail and Jake are splattered by mud, but otherwise fine.

  • Algernon leads them to safety.
    • Talltail helps Jake over a stream, and Reena questions why the warrior helped the kittypet.
      • Talltail replies simply that Jake helped him.
  • Algernon leads the group to the rogues' temporary camp; the other rogues greet Talltail.
    • Sparrow in particular is surprised to see Talltail.
      • Talltail envisions killing Sparrow.
  • When questioned why he was there, Talltail lies that he wants to travel with the rogues.

        • Algernon questions if Reena can swim.
    • Sparrow mentions there are plenty of pigeons around.
  • Talltail pads out of the bracken and says he and Jake can help hunt.
    • The rogues are skeptical, but Talltail mentions Jake caught a mouse the other day.
      • Mole grunts they can do without kittypet help.
  • Reena comments that Talltail is different, less angry.
    • Talltail feels awkward, as he is still furious about Sandgorse's death, but he wants to get the rogues' trust.
      • He lies and says it wasn't Sparrow's fault Sandgorse died, and that the rogue was lucky when his father wasn't.
  • Algernon offers Talltail and Jake a pigeon.
    • Talltail refuses at first, but ultimately accepts.
  • Talltail is aware of Sparrow's stare, and knows that the rogue tom knows why the warrior is there.
  • Bess asks how Palebird is.

    • Talltail takes Jake aside for a word in private, making the excuse that they're going to practice the kittypet tom's hunting.
      • The warrior tom confides in his kittypet friend how he's going to kill Sparrow (when he and the rogue go hunting together by the cliff); Jake tries to talk him out of it, to no success.
  • Talltail and Sparrow go hunting; Talltail convinces him to go to the Thunderpath
    • They go to Thunderpath, and Talltail confronts Sparrow, saying he's going to kill him because the rogue left Sandgorse to die.
    • Sparrow tells Talltail that Sandgorse gave his life to save him, and that he died a hero.

      • He suggests sending a patrol to get some to Heatherstar, who is hesitant but eventually accepts.
  • Talltail and Barkface set out and try to wait for a RiverClan patrol, but none come by, so they swim across instead.
  • Right as they get across, a RiverClan patrol arrives.

  • Talltail tells the patrol he and Barkface need to speak with Brambleberry.
    • At first the patrol tries to get them to go away, but Piketooth tells the patrol to let them see her.
  • Talltail and Barkface are escorted to RiverClan's camp.
  • When they arrive, Hailstar comes out of his den, and Barkface tells the RiverClan leader they would like some sweet-sedge.
  • Brambleberry comes out of her den.
    • Stormkit can be heard from within, and Brambleberry mentions that he fell.
  • Barkface tells Brambleberry that Hopkit has an infected paw and the infection is spreading fast.
    • She agrees to lend him some sweet-sedge.
      • Brambleberry gives Barkface and Talltail the sweet-sedge.
  • Talltail and Barkface are escorted off of RiverClan territory.

  • Talltail follows a scent trail and discovers ShadowClan has been stealing prey and smuggling it through the tunnel under the Thunderpath.
