The first ever medicine cat, Moth Flight, comes to her and warns her that one of her warriors will turn rogue and leave WindClan. Heatherstar is doubtful of this, but also concerned.
He will stray, and you must let him, even if you fear he will never return. It is the only way he will discover where he truly belongs.
Barkkit asks Tallkit if he's watching the meeting; Tallkit says they aren't old enough, but the other kit asks him who would know or care if they watched.
Ryepaw comments that it's in RiverClan territory, and therefore not their problem.
Larksplash takes Ryepaw to check the border.
Dawnstripe points out RiverClan's marshy land, and forests of ThunderClan, Fourtrees, the Great Rock, ShadowClan's territory and the Thunderpath to Tallpaw.
Tallpaw is excited about being able to go to Gatherings.
Dawnstripe shows him the high moor and Highstones.
The mentor and apprentice hear a tunneling patrol below.
Dawnstripe explains that Tallpaw will get basic tunneling training.
Tallpaw's old worries spark all over again.
The two head back to WindClan's camp.
Dawnstripe talks about the glory of being a WindClan cat.
Tallpaw worries about when Sandgorse said he has a tunneler's tail, and the look of disappointment in his father's eyes.
Barkpaw comes to greet Tallpaw.
Tallpaw asks his friend if he wants to share a mouse.
Tallpaw comments about his sore paws, but his friend tells him it's perfectly normal.
Shrewpaw teases Tallpaw again, calling him "Wormpaw".
The former insists the latter was supposed to be a tunneler.
The moor-runners and tunnelers argue about the usefulness of the tunnel.
Reedfeather comments that the tunnels can be used for more than just wars, which makes Tallpaw suspicious.
Tallpaw feels bad about quarreling with his father, then wonders why his father is so obsessed with him being a tunneler; Tallpaw feels like a traitor.
Shrewpaw once again insists that Tallpaw was supposed to be a tunneler.
Tallpaw remembers earlier in the day when Heatherstar had convinced Hickorynose, who, though very reluctant, agreed to go to the Gathering.
Cloudrunner and Hickorynose continue to bicker about the new tunnel.
Stagleap comments that Tallpaw helped dig it, making the young black-and-white apprentice feel bad all over again about Sandgorse obsessing over him being a tunneler.
The cats head to the Gathering, but not before Shrewpaw bullies Tallpaw again.
Ryestalk, Doespring, and Stagleap are all excited for their first Gathering as warriors; Doespring offers to race Tallpaw but he declines, feeling depressed about Sandgorse.
Tallpaw explains his troubles to his mentor, who does her best to comfort him.
The Clan leaders share news - Cedarstar of ShadowClan shares that three kits were born to Silverflame; Pinestar mentions some trouble with dogs, but it was easily resolved; Hailstar states RiverClan has had more than enough fish.
While the Clan leaders were talking, Tallpaw sees Reedfeather with Fallowtail, though the latter is unnamed.
He is surprised by how close they seem.
Heatherstar announces Tallpaw, the newest apprentice, and the other Clans chant his name.
Stagleap goes to greet Shimmerpelt, a she-cat from RiverClan, who he has a crush on.
Dawnstripe introduces Tallpaw to some ShadowClan apprentices - Frogpaw, Newtpaw, and Ashpaw.
Tallpaw doesn't know what to think of them.
Dawnstripe explains it's extremely helpful to know your enemy - such as their scent.
The trio hunts a rabbit; it goes does a hole and Woollytail comes out.
Woollytail casually mentions the tunnel flooded while Tallpaw was helping underground.
Dawnstripe is alarmed by this.
Reena is merely interested, and questions why Tallpaw isn't a tunneler when both his parents are.
She says Heatherstar should know about this.
Dawnstripe sends Tallpaw to Outlook Rock with Hareflight and Shrewpaw.
The apprentices practice observing.
Tallpaw observes a buzzard teaching its fledglings to fly, which impresses Hareflight.
The cats return to WindClan camp.
He sees the leader and deputy, and some of the tunnelers gathered.
Tallpaw and Reena share a lapwing and talk about the tunnelers
Sandgorse furiously stomps over, and angrily tells Tallpaw that the tunnel to the river has to be blocked off and abandoned, and it's all his son's fault because he was too rabbit-hearted and cowardly to be a tunneler, and got a fright when his paws got wet, and now he ruined the project the tunnelers spent moons on.
Tallpaw explains to Heatherstar about him smelling the patrol but not telling at first.
Shrewpaw attacks Tallpaw, screeching the black-and-white tom killed his mother.
Hareflight pulls his apprentice away.
Even Barkpaw is cold towards Tallpaw.
Reena says it's not Tallpaw's fault, but Bess tells her to stay out of it.
Tallpaw still blames himself, thinking even his mother will hate him because it was his fault her friend died.
The medicine cats treat wounds and the warriors rebuild.
Hawkheart consoles Tallpaw, saying it wasn't his fault.
Tallpaw worries that he ruined his friendship with Barkpaw.
The tunnelers come into camp for the first time since the battle and are surprised to learn Brackenwing died.
Shrewpaw yowls that Tallpaw killed Brackenwing, and Sandgorse is ready to believe this, before Heatherstar says it isn't true.
Reedfeather scolds Shrewpaw.
The tunnelers and moor runners argue; the moor runners say the tunnelers should've been there to help defend the camp, while the tunnelers insist the gorge tunnel could have been an escape route and hiding place.
Tallpaw realizes the Clan is tearing itself apart.
Leaf-fall is approaching, and the rogues are leaving.
Tallpaw is happy to see them go, especially Sparrow.
Tallpaw quickly becomes furious that Sparrow is leaving, thinking that Sparrow shouldn't be able to get away unpunished after killing Sandgorse and ending tunneling.
Tallpaw notices Woollytail and Palebird are getting close.
He is apprehensive about this.
Tallpaw feels trapped, thinking how he'll be a warrior, then a senior warrior, and then an elder.
Tallpaw and a few others go hunting.
Tallpaw and Shrewpaw race back into camp, with Tallpaw being the winner.
Tallpaw again feels trapped, philosophizing how Clan cats are like the visitors: they arrive, eat, sleep, and then go to StarClan.
Dawnstripe, Tallpaw, Shrewpaw, and Hareflight take travelling herbs and prepare leave for the Moonstone.
The patrol heads down the tunnel to the Moonstone.
Shrewpaw taunts Tallpaw, but Hareflight tells his apprentice to knock it off.
They arrive at the Moonstone cavern; the apprentices share with StarClan.
StarClan shows Tallpaw where the greenleaf visitors are rather than speaking to him; Tallpaw is disappointed.
The patrol heads home.
Tallpaw feels like WindClan's territory is so small.
The kits greet the returning patrol, and Hopkit in particular is shown to have a friendship with the older apprentice.
Tallpaw and Shrewpaw's final assessment.
Tallpaw easily passes the observation part.
Dawnstripe and Tallpaw and Hareflight and Shrewpaw regroup.
Shrewpaw is mentioned to have done well hunting.
They move on to the battle skills part.
Tallpaw and Shrewpaw fight to show their battle skills.
Shrewpaw accuses Tallpaw of cheating, but the former used his claws himself.
Shrewpaw continues to taunt Tallpaw, the latter sees Shrewpaw as Sparrow, and unknowingly almost kills Shrewpaw due to his pent-up anger at his fellow apprentice for bullying him his whole life and the rogue for causing Sandgorse's death.
The kits - Hopkit, Sorrelkit, and Pigeonkit - talk about showing the new kits around camp.
This leads Talltail to remember one of his first days outside the nursery, when he fell in the hole he had dug, and how if he hadn't he might've wanted to be a tunneler.
The kits are born.
Talltail tries to nudge one of the kits so it can feed from his mother, but Palebird snaps at him.
Barkpaw says the kits are healthy and asks where he and Talltail are going.
Talltail realizes the tom said we for the first time in a long time.
Talltail shows Barkpaw the view from Outlook Rock - Highstones and the mountains behind it.
The black-and-white warrior asks the medicine apprentice if he ever wonder's what it's like beyond Clan territory - new herbs and such.
Barkpaw says he hasn't even learned all the herbs that grow in Clan territory.
Talltail and Barkpaw briefly argue about Talltail being truly needed in the Clan.
The two toms also talk about destinies and StarClan.
In the end, Talltail again vows to get revenge on Sparrow, and that not even StarClan can stop him.
Talltail reluctantly tells Jake the story of how Sparrow and Sandgorse went into an unstable tunnel and Sparrow left his father behind, and now he has to find Sparrow to get revenge.
Jake wants to help.
Talltail reluctantly agrees to let Jake go with him to the end of the Twolegplace.
Jake's end of the deal is for Talltail to be nice to Jake's Twoleg in order to be let out.
Though very reluctant, Talltail pretends to like Jake's Twoleg and in turn gets let out.
The two toms make their way through Twolegplace, first meeting Quince, who Jake seems to have a crush on.
Talltail sees Sparrow getting up and decides to take his chance to kill the rogue tom.
Reena sees him; he tells her he's going hunting with Sparrow. She rogue she-cat advises him against this, and offers him to go with her.
Talltail makes up an excuse that he'll get more sleep.
Sparrow comes back with a pigeon; the rogues gather around to eat.
Talltail takes Jake aside for a word in private, making the excuse that they're going to practice the kittypet tom's hunting.
The warrior tom confides in his kittypet friend how he's going to kill Sparrow (when he and the rogue go hunting together by the cliff); Jake tries to talk him out of it, to no success.
Talltail and Sparrow go hunting; Talltail convinces him to go to the Thunderpath
They go to Thunderpath, and Talltail confronts Sparrow, saying he's going to kill him because the rogue left Sandgorse to die.
Sparrow tells Talltail that Sandgorse gave his life to save him, and that he died a hero.
Talltail realizes he can't kill Sparrow, but before he can make a move, the earth around Sparrow crumbles, and the rogue falls into the ravine.
Many moons later, Talltail is at Mothermouth for his nine lives ceremony.
He reflects on how Heatherstar's last life was taken by Greencough.
He ordered Mudclaw to tell the Clan to sit vigil for Heatherstar.
Onekit is briefly mentioned, asking if Heatherstar was really dead.
Talltail wonders if Sandgorse is watching him.
Or Palebird, who died moons before.
Talltail goes into the tunnel, and into the Moonstone cavern.
Talltail arrives in StarClan.
He is greeted by Mole, who says he believed in StarClan and they believed in him; he gives Talltail a life for courage to do what he believes is right.
Palebird gives him the love of a mother for her kits.
Finchkit gives him a life for the strength to act without fear or hesitation.
Moth Flight gives him a life for a sense of adventure.
Heatherstar gives a life for him the power to judge wisely.
Woollytail gives him a life for honoring traditions.
Dawnstripe gives him a life for patience.
Shrewclaw gives Tallstar a life for commitment to upholding the warrior code
But only after calling him Wormcat once more, to which Tallstar corrects jokingly he will be Wormstar soon.
Sandgorse gives him a life for forgiveness.
Sandgorse hints to Tallstar that Jake will father a kit, and it is Tallstar's duty to guide and help the kit, because he is important to all the Clans.
Sandgorse tells Tallstar to remember "there is no need to be afraid of every flame. Fire can bring life, warmth, new growth, as well as death.”
