Chapter Description[]

Hollypaw is shocked at Jaypaw's decision, since her brother always had wanted to become a warrior. Firestar asks if she and Jaypaw planned on this, but she denies it. Jaypaw apologizes to Hollypaw, and blinks in surprise when Leafpool tells him of her decision to become a warrior. Firestar asks Leafpool if she is ready for another apprentice, and she states that Jaypaw would be a great medicine cat. As for Jaypaw's blindness, Leafpool and Hollypaw state that his sense of smell is more than enough. Finally, Firestar agrees.
However, when Firestar tells them that they will need to inform Brightheart of this, and Hollypaw knows that Jaypaw knows as well as she does that she will be hurt. Hollypaw suggests that Brightheart becomes her mentor instead, but Firestar assures her that Brightheart will have another apprentice soon. Jaypaw promises that he will make sure that Brightheart will understand and directs Hollypaw to the warrior's den. Brightheart is sitting in here, washing, and stops when Hollypaw tells her that Firestar wants to speak with her.
Hollypaw exits the den quickly, and slipped into the apprentices' den, thinking that she would be sleeping here that night. She gets excited at the thought of training. She heads back toward Firestar's den, seeing Foxkit and Icekit bursting into the clearing, Ferncloud's voice from the nursery warning them to be careful. Icekit rolls toward Hollypaw, and she steadies the kit, receiving a greeting before the two kits play fight. Hollypaw helps both of the kits, saying they will both be great warriors. She spots Brightheart jumping down the tumble of rocks, and feels a flash of sympathy for her. Per request, Hollypaw shows the kits a battle move.
Firestar walks up to her, and tells her that he has decided on her new mentor. Foxkit confusedly asks that Hollypaw is getting a new mentor, and Firestar explains that she's going to train as a warrior, and that Hollypaw knows what lies in her heart best. Cloudtail tells Firestar that her new mentor was coming, and the leader reminds her that Hollypaw would have to train hard. Brackenfur emerges from the thorn barrier, and Hollypaw is happy about Firestar's choice.
Brackenfur tells the ThunderClan leader that he would be happy to train Hollypaw, and tells her to stick to her choice, because she has a lot to catch up to. She and Brackenfur depart the camp for hunting patrol, and Hollypaw realizes how unfit she is. She sees Graystripe, Millie, Ashfur, Spiderleg, Lionpaw and Mousepaw. Brackenfur tells them that she is now a warrior apprentice, and they all exchange ideas on where they could catch some prey, and they take off running again towards the old Thunderpath. Wondering how the patrol knew to follow Brackenfur, they arrive and she slips into a space beside Brackenfur.
At her turn, she spots a leaf fluttering and pounces but gets embarrassed because it just turns out to be nothing. Millie encourages her to give it another try. Hollypaw decides that she's not fast enough to hunt from the bracken yet, so she stealthily climbs onto a root and begins to wait. Brackenfur nods in approval. She keeps perfectly still, and sees a mouse nosing it way from underneath the leaves. She catches it, and thanks StarClan for the mouse, and thinks that she is on her way to becoming a warrior at last.
