Chapter description[]

Leafpool looks into the clearing from behind a tree trunk. Tigerstar looks at Hawkfrost and Brambleclaw, and tells them that courage matters more than everything. Hawkfrost responds, and his words are inaudible to Leafpool. Tigerstar says that he is talking about courage when dealing with their Clan and that they must obey your orders, and if not, tooth and claw should be brought in. Leafpool gasps, thinking back to Firestar, and tells herself that the flame-colored tom would never do a thing like that. Tigerstar continues, saying that weakness is dangerous. Leafpool wonders if that was how Tigerstar had felt when he had committed all of his crimes.
Brambleclaw asks Tigerstar how they would become leaders, and remarks that Firestar would never make him deputy because he didn't have an apprentice yet. Tigerstar is angered by this, and when Brambleclaw murmurs something, Tigerstar's temper returns. He says that both Hawkfrost and Brambleclaw have the true spirit of warriors, and Hawkfrost shows enthusiasm about his words. Suddenly, Tigerstar turns his head to the spot where Leafpool is hiding. Leafpool takes off, horrified, and then wakes up, finding herself face to face with Brambleclaw, who asks if she is okay. When Leafpool doesn't answer, he asks again and says that he heard her cry out. The medicine cat stammers, saying that she is fine. Brambleclaw notifies Leafpool that Firestar is choosing cats to go to the Gathering, and asks her if she is fit to come. The she-cat says that she is fine and that she would like to come to the Gathering.
Leafpool goes out to grab some borage leaves. On her way back, she notices Cloudtail and Daisy training in a clearing. She sees Cloudtail telling Daisy to hit him hard, just for training purposes. The horseplace cat reluctantly agrees, and Cloudtail fights back with a move she can't beat. The cream-colored cat wails that it isn't fair. Back in camp, Brightheart thanks Leafpool for the borage, swiftly grabs the herb, and heads toward the elders' den. Irritated, Leafpool lets out a hiss. Cinderpelt approaches the medicine cat, asking her what the matter is. Leafpool mutters that there are too many healers in the Clan. Cinderpelt advises the brown she-cat to be patient with Brightheart, adding that the greatest gift there could be is the bravery to accept what StarClan destines. Leafpool notices a glimmer of melancholy in the dark gray cat's eyes. When Leafpool is about to ask what is wrong, Cinderpelt goes back to her den.
Daisy and Cloudtail appear at the entrance. The white warrior is play-wrestling with the horseplace cat's kits. Brightheart returns, and watches Cloudtail, commenting that her mate is very good with the kits. A sudden stab of sympathy fills Leafpool's heart but discontinues when Mousefur pads up and asks the ginger and white she-cat for some poppy seeds. The medicine cat starts taking this as a sign from StarClan that ThunderClan doesn't need her anymore.
