Chapter description[]

Squirrelflight is on a quiet dawn patrol with Ashfur and Thornclaw, checking the ShadowClan border. She asks Ashfur if he's scented the kittypets, and he responds in the negative, summoning Rainwhisker back to the rest of the patrol. The sun shines in the stone hollow as the cats return to camp, where a frantic Cinderpelt greets them, asking if they have seen Leafpool at all. Concerned, Squirrelflight replies that she hasn't, almost revealing that Leafpool often visits WindClan, but stops herself. Cinderpelt knows what she is trying to say, stating that she saw Leafpool before cutting herself off and instead mentioning that her nest was cold this morning. Squirrelflight apologizes, but the medicine cat murmurs that it's fine, affirming that she's aware Leafpool is visiting Crowfeather. Appalled by this relevation, Squirrelflight stammers that it can't possibly be true, but Cinderpelt responds that Crowfeather and Leafpool often look at each other at Gatherings, hinting that they had something between them.
Squirrelflight now sees that Cinderpelt is right, noting Leafpool's guilt and giddiness and that she has been distracted by her budding friendship with Ashfur. She questions if she might have gone to WindClan to be with Crowfeather, and Cinderpelt says that she isn't sure, recalling her heated quarrel with Leafpool the previous night coldly. Despite her strong feelings, as she walks away, the dark gray she-cat wails for StarClan to save Leafpool. The camp begins to come alive, with Daisy bringing her kits out of the nursery and warriors heading out on patrol. Exhausted, Cinderpelt prepares to tell Firestar of Leafpool's disappearance, but Squirrelflight interjects and offers to search for her sister, hoping she can find her before anyone notices that she is missing. Grateful, she thanks her, thinking about how Leafpool doesn't see that ThunderClan needs her and that she is throwing away so much.
Squirrelflight runs out the thorn tunnel, not believing that Leafpool is on ThunderClan territory sulking, as that is rather uncharacteristic of her. She thinks about venturing on WindClan territory, which someone questions out loud, startling Squirrelflight. She finds Brambleclaw, who points out that they shouldn't start trouble with them, but she retorts that Cinderpelt speculates Leafpool went to WindClan to be with Crowfeather. Brambleclaw agrees that they need to find her, not wanting any arguments with Onestar, and adding that she's making a huge mistake. Squirrelflight spits that Leafpool is crazy for running off, saying that she has to try and persuade her to come back, needing to find where she is. Brambleclaw inquires if she can sense anything, and although Squirrelflight tries, she gets no results. He decides to come with her to WindClan, and not caring about him trusting Hawkfrost, Squirrelflight is grateful that she has company.
As they walk to the WindClan border, Squirrelflight finds it incomprehensible that Leafpool would give up everything just to be with Crowfeather, her status as a medicine cat, her kin, and StarClan. Despite nature unfurling around her, her thoughts do not leave Leafpool, and Brambleclaw gives her a sympathetic look, having had a sister who defected to another Clan in Tawnypelt. Brambleclaw admits that he felt alone after Tawnypelt left, but knew he had to respect her choice even if he didn't like it, and Squirrelflight notes that it isn't the same compared to Leafpool. The two cats reach the stream, and Squirrelflight detects her sister's stale scent, stating that Leafpool crossed it. She and Brambleclaw find more of her scent across the stream, mixed with Crowfeather's, and Squirrelflight begins to believe she might have permanently lost Leafpool.
