- Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw are heading towards the WindClan camp where they hope to find Leafpool. They meet Webfoot and Weaselfur, who are hostile towards them, most likely because they believe that ThunderClan has stolen Crowfeather. They meet Onestar, who accuses them of stealing Crowfeather. Squirrelflight begins to hotly deny it, before Brambleclaw calms her down. They being to talk with Onestar. He tells them that Crowfeather was not in the warriors den that night, instead his scent led to the ThunderClan border where Onestar presumed he met a ThunderClan cat. Squirrelflight says that the cat is Leafpool, and defends her sister against Ashfoot and Onestar. The cats hunt for a scent trail and eventually find one that leads across the border and vanishes. Brambleclaw comforts Squirrelflight, who is distraught and states that they are loosing all the journeying cats.
- They arrive at camp. Everyone is disappointed upon noticing that Leafpool is not with them. Brightheart is dismayed and protests that she was not trying to take Leafpool's place. Squirrelflight soothes her though secretly knows that this could have been a factor in Leafpool's disappearance. Brambleclaw explains the situation. When he finishes, Cinderpelt is distressed. Sandstorm and Firestar state that the whole Clan has lost Leafpool. Squirrelflight thinks to herself that Leafpool most have loved Crowfeather very much to go with him. She wonders if she would do that for Ashfur, and does not think she would. When she wonders the same thing about Brambleclaw, she finds she cannot answer.
