Heya, this is my first post with any sort of content. I want to make it something bigger than usual. It’s just a few of my thoughts so disregard any of my personal opinions if they conflict with yours! Thanks! ;3

                 Intro

Longtail. I’m sure you’ve heard the name before. He’s most remembered for what he did in the first book and his snarky attitude. He started out as a young, naive, and aggressive warrior who could not accept Bluestar’s decision to take young Rusty into the Clan. Named after his long tail, he was a useful warrior, loyal to his Clan for his entire life. Here, I will discuss his life and my opinion on it.

      Youth and His First Appearances

When he appears in Into the Wild, he calls Rusty out for being a kittypet when trying to join the Clan. Rusty attack him, defending his honor. Longtail insults him and tries to strangle him with his collar, only for it to break. Bluestar comes down from the highledge, declaring this as a sign from StarClan that Rusty, then Firepaw, is meant for Clan life. Was Longtail wrong to attack Rusty? Well, in my opinion, he wasn’t entirely wrong. Even though the story is told in a way that is meant to place Longtail in the position of an antagonist, I can’t say that what he did was against Clan morals. Yes, it harms our main character, but Clan cats are told from the beginning that kittypets are soft and gullible. Not to mention that there’s a law in the Warrior code saying to deny the soft life of a kittypet. Though aggression may not be the most appropriate way to handle this situation, it was somewhat strategical to place it there. Not only does it build on Longtail’s character, but also builds the sense of pride that ThunderClan becomes known for later in the series. Most of my friends say that the first book is the most boring in the series, and I feel that this fight seen gave new readers a hint of the action and emotion that could be expected later in the series and to keep them from just putting it down.

Small Bit About Him and His Crew

Though he continues to mock and torment Firestar/heart through most of his warrior life, his loyalties are shown when his friend Tigerclaw, later to be Tigerstar, was exiled. As Tigerclaw was about to leave after being exposed and exiled, he asks Longtail and Darkstripe to leave with him and be rogues together. They both deny his offer, Darkstripe being hesitant and unsure, while Longtail is more sure and sorrowful. Tigerclaw is shocked and leaves the camp alone.

To me, this is beautiful character development, showing not only that Longtail is more than just a villain to torment Fireheart, but also a loyal warrior with a deep connection and love for his Clan. I love it when books give more than one side to a character, and they did this very well.

Elder years and the Bunny Incident
As Longtail aged, and Fireheart became Firestar, Longtail became victim to a few
unfortunate ‘events’. I feel like the Erins were just dumping stuff on him. More of,
there were things that happened to him that some people find weird, silly, or even
stupid.
When hunting, Longtail caught sight of a bunny. Of course he went to catch the
prey for his Clan. The bunny, secretly being a professional boxer, gave Longtail
nice, deep scratches in his eyes as it fought for its life. Cinderpelt was unable
to completely heal him and infection found its way to his wound. This blinded him.
He, being the snappy warrior he was, proceeded to complain about how he was no use
to his Clan if he couldn’t see and gave Firestar an overall hard time. He ended up
moving to the elders’ den because of his newfound disability.
Most people think that being blinded by a bunny was kind of a lame way to be
‘disfigured’ as some might say. I do think that they could have done better with the
process of blinding, but it goes to show a deeper level of danger in Clan life
(not to mention that it was the first mention of cats being disabled in ways such
as blinding). Besides battles and wild predators, the forest is filled with smaller
dangers. This points out that there are more dangers yet to be explored in the
series, which is one of the reasons the Warriors series is able to make so many
books and still be insanely popular.
        Death and Place in StarClan
His death was also somewhat debated on. I’m not sure how much it was debated in
the fandom, but it was debated between my friends and I when it happened. He dies
when Mousefur asks (demands) him to get her a mouse. He leaves to get it, only to
be crushed by the same fallen tree that cripples Briarlight. He dies and Mousefur
blames herself for many moons after.
I feel the same way about his death as I do his blinding and don’t have much
to say about it, but I did find his death really sad. He appeared in The Last Hope’s
major battle as a StarClan warrior, but only for a while. It was pretty much;
“Mousefur, I’m so happy to see you! Oh wait you’re dead.” I can at least find
happiness in knowing that they’re in StarClan together, since the book made it a
point of saying it.

If you for some reason enjoyed this and want to see more, make sure you
say so pleaaaassse! Thank you few that made it through the whole thing. <3!
