The shading on her tail seems gray. Just lighten it a tiny bit. ☽➸ Hawky Void Shadowshot18:00 Thu Jul 3

I think blurring the shading might actually fix that. Instead of lightening it, try to smooth the transition between the shading and where it stops. I've done that before and it seems to have worked out pretty well before. Jayce(04:28, 7/5/2014)

I think it's fine. The line is the shading for the cat's cheekbone, I believe, so it'd be there while parts of the face are in light. Queen Beebs 18:10, July 3, 2014 (UTC)

(this is not a case of 'I don't want to do anything' okay) Ahh I think it's fine, unless someone else agrees, and on what parts, specifically? Queen Beebs 21:02, July 6, 2014 (UTC)

I think the facial shading could use a bit of blurring, or something like that, to perhaps make the transitions and areas where the light hit a bit softer. I also think the front legs, moreso <-- one, could use a little bit of blurring. Also, given your source (at least I think I'm reading this right), wouldn't the chest area have slightly darker shading in places (like right under the neck), due to it being the furthest from the light? See, I'm learning. Jayce(22:15, 7/6/2014)

I think it's fine unless someone agrees, ahh ;; Queen Beebs 00:49, July 8, 2014 (UTC)

Short-haired, wild cats are gonna be boney- these aren't plump cats, and with shorter fur, bones and joints are gonna be far more prominent. Facial shading should be the sharpest of your shading, and right now it's way overblurred. Remove some shading along her shoulder, and add a curve going along her belly to show that it's round, and covering up part of her side from being seen, as right now it's totally flat. Rainlegs 02:43, July 11, 2014 (UTC)

Thing is, I keep on getting told to blur and define the facial shading, so that would be going completely against what I was told. For the shading along her shoulder, she'd look flat. There is a curve on her belly - although a bit faint - and you can clearly tell that it's round. I'll shade the parts being covered on her side, since that would have some faint shading, but other than that, I think it's fine. Queen Beebs 03:03, July 11, 2014 (UTC)

You're entirely missing my point. Defining facial shading is sharpening it, and blurring it makes it worse. It may be that it was too dark? Either way, facial shading on any image should be sharpest. The curve on her belly isn't there at all. It should be on the right-hand side, going along the left side of the line defining the shoulder. Look at Hawk Swoop's picture for what I'm going at. Shoulders are muscles, and in a cat, they're vital for hunting and walking. Therefore, the muscle will be there, and prominent, giving them a beefier limb there. The shoulder won't be concave, and would cast a highlight along it, unlike what you have here, which suggests it curves and is being absorbed by the rest of the body. Rainlegs 03:07, July 11, 2014 (UTC)

To be honest, the facial shading/belly shading looks fine to me. Define the hindleg shading.--~Breezeheart~ (talk) 03:34, July 11, 2014 (UTC)

I agree with Leggy. Not everything is going to be soft and even and uniform, especially with cats. They have motions and basically their own laws of movement/nature/ect, and obviously their muscles are going to reflect that. Hawk Swoop's queen is a perfect example of what Leggy is talking about. ^^ Jayce(03:39, 7/11/2014)

but not every cats shading has to be the same, and whos to say that she isnt plump?? yes they live wild but she could be taking twoleg food for a we know. its assumptions and shading doesnt have to be 100% boody perfect. david 🌈 12:51, July 11, 2014 (UTC)

well, i tried already, this is a pike. that's what i tried to base this off of, and in other images the spots are bigger, basically there's not to great of a consistent pattern in the mottles in northern pikes, which is what i want to base this off of because of his name. -Ducksauce 18:35, July 1, 2014 (UTC)

anything else?? -Ducksauce 21:33, July 9, 2014 (UTC)

Blur your shading- it's way too hard-edged. Try to avoid using gaussian blur, which will give you the over-blurred, undefined look, and go for using a large, super fuzzy smudge tool to feather out certain areas. Shading will be softer on cuirved, plump areas, like on the haunch, tail, and belly, but it'll be a little sharper on bonier regions. Rainlegs 02:41, July 11, 2014 (UTC)

Yes, Duck, but there comes a point where the shading is too dark on some places. Define the light and shading on her tail. Looks great, Hawk :)--~Breezeheart~ (talk) 02:09, July 5, 2014 (UTC)

I'm just gonna say that yes, it can look gray, but it is more than possible to shade white and still have it look white. There's no need for "e.e" or something like that, so knock it off instead of acting annoyed when a critique is offered. If you believe it's fine, then respectfully decline the critique. The emotes which imply you're pretty annoyed is unnecessary- doesn't matter if you agree or disagree- we're supposed to be getting along, and Breezeheart is correct. There are times where sometimes the shading is just too dark- but that is a matter of opinion and artist's style, which the whole point of PCA is to bring together those styles to make art..not to bicker about whether or not something is right or wrong. Yes, the belly is gray, but I was talking more about the paws in my comment, which would have some light on them. I also know some people use off-white, which also contributes to it looking grayer than normal. Jayce(02:30, 7/5/2014)

Re-uploaded. Hmm, I used pure white, and I am using black shading. I can't really do much to it without throwing off the light source and/or making it seem flat. I think that tinted shading, however, would disrupt the balance of the colors. Any suggestions? ☽➸ Hawky Void Shadowshot19:17 Sat Jul 5

Tint the shading a little more red, which won't throw off your red-based brown, and lighten it a touch. See how that works and then we can see where it goes from there. :) Rainlegs 22:14, July 5, 2014 (UTC)

Defining the light source means to make the light face the same way everywhere on the cat. So let's say that your light source in in the top right corner. Everything in shadow would be everything from the bottom left corner. Idk I'm bad at explaining. As for the shading, It wasn't that gray. Now you need to define it. That depends on the light source. The face is suggesting a frontal light source, so yes, there would be light on the chest, but the tail suggests from behind, where there wouldn't be any, depending on the angle of the shading. Like in Hawk Swoop's queen, the light from behind is at a slight angle, which illuminates the sharper bones in her facial region, but because cats don't have convex chests, the chest itself isn't lit up. Re-Ups [9] I really hope it's shaped okay. This image is actually really, /really/ fun. User:Notquiterocketwildbokan/Sig 15:06, July 5, 2014 (UTC)

Remove that bit of shading right by the chest since it doesn't belong there. And you might want to get a second opinion on this, but can you define the earpink a bit? Also blur the stomach shading a tad. Silverhmm 16:34, July 5, 2014 (UTC)

Re-ups. Ehhhhhhh... okay. The earpink is under the shading layers, I'll re-do it if someone else agrees, mainly because it took a few tries to get them right without seemind, well, neon-ish. [10] also the shading is strange on her leg i know but that's the only way I could include the shoulder and not the chest. User:Notquiterocketwildbokan/Sig 17:36, July 5, 2014 (UTC)

By shoulder I meant that line between the belly and the head, but okay... Darken the shading on the legs slightly, maybe? And there's waste by her chest. Shinxy Blitz and Melody 18:57, July 5, 2014 (UTC)

Storm (Ro).star Since the other one got declined, I figured I'd give this a go. The face shading is bugging me, but I can't figure out how to fix it. Jayie Unwritten words~ 14:33, July 5, 2014 (UTC)

Try defining the facial shading to see if that helps. One way I've found is good is to bring the layers back down so it's just your linart, base color (no stripes if you can) and your shading. User:Notquiterocketwildbokan/Sig 15:08, July 5, 2014 (UTC)

Maybe put a little more shading in the ear, just on the inner edge? And the pupil is looking a little pale, maybe darken that a bit? Jayie Unwritten words~ 20:33, July 6, 2014 (UTC)

Pupils are fine to me, since it's the eye color on the other images, and if I put shading in the ear, I'll get told to define it /again/, plus I have no clue what you mean by the inner edge =P Queen Beebs 20:35, July 6, 2014 (UTC)

I didn't mean the rest of the eye, I meant the black part of the eye, it's looking a bit more like pale gray. I think it's from the shading. Before, you had shading on the entirety of the ear. I just meant for you to shade the inner edge. If the ear looks like this (/\ then I meant shade along the edge here (/ <-- if that made any sense. That'll show the shadow of the inside of the ear without making the whole ear completely in shadow. Jayie Unwritten words~ 20:42, July 6, 2014 (UTC)

The black parts of the eye are pure black, as I just checked, but I'll get to the ear thing in just a moment. Queen Beebs 20:44, July 6, 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, but I think the paw shading (on both paws) and chest shading could use a bit more blurring. Also, just out of curiosity, did you shade the ears? If you did, it appears flat. If you didn't, ignore that comment. Jayce(22:53, 7/7/2014)

I only shaded on the edge of the ear, not on the actual ears, dear. I'll re-upload with the chest shading and feets shading blurred in a few minutes or so. Queen Beebs 00:02, July 8, 2014 (UTC)

You can have lighter shading and it still be visible. If you want lighter shading and visible at the same time, perhaps try unblurring the shading a bit? Defining means to make more visible.
